Chapter 80 - The Knight Who Chose

"That wasn't the boss."

Nobody had time to process those words.

The floor exploded.

Crystal shattered beneath their feet as another section of the chamber collapsed into the growing abyss below.

The survivors screamed.

Bunny grabbed two of them before they could tumble over the edge.

"Move!" Jax barked.

That snapped everyone back to reality.

Formation Sierra dissolved instantly.

Now they were running.

The chamber continued tearing itself apart around them.

The heartbeat was gone.

Whatever had been sleeping beneath the mountain no longer needed one.

It was awake.

The entire dungeon groaned.

Not stone.

Not crystal.

Something deeper.

Something alive.

Jax hated that realization.

He hated it more when another pulse rolled through the cavern and he felt the emotion hidden inside it.

Confusion.

Pain.

Hunger.

The same overwhelming hunger.

The survivors sprinted after the Vixens.

Nobody questioned orders.

Not anymore.

A floor dropped out behind them.

Then another.

The dungeon was dying.

Or perhaps transforming.

Jax wasn't sure which.

System notifications continued appearing.

"Helpful," Nyxian muttered while running. "Maybe tell us something we don't know."

The ceiling above them cracked.

A crystal formation the size of a house broke free.

It never reached the ground.

Zee's barriers intercepted it.

The impact shook the tunnel.

The survivors stared.

Zee adjusted her glasses.

"Keep moving."

They kept moving.

The first floor entrance appeared ahead.

Daylight.

Freedom.

Hope.

Then the mountain moved.

Everyone felt it.

Not a tremor.

Not a quake.

Movement.

The entire world shifted.

Stone screamed.

The tunnel tilted.

Several survivors lost their footing.

Jax caught one by the collar and physically threw him toward safety.

The entrance was less than fifty yards away now.

Twenty.

Ten.

Five.

The group burst from the cave.

And immediately froze.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody could.

Because the mountain wasn't a mountain anymore.

The ground beneath the cave entrance was rising.

Entire forests slid from its surface.

Trees toppled.

Stone cracked.

Earth split apart.

What they had thought was a mountain was beginning to stand.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Like something that hadn't moved in centuries.

Or millennia.

The survivors stared upward.

One of them whispered a prayer.

Another started crying.

Bunny's jaw hung open.

"That..."

She swallowed.

"...is not a mountain."

"No," Llandra agreed quietly.

"It isn't."

Far above them, an enormous shape emerged from the earth.

A shoulder.

Then an arm.

Then part of a face.

Hundreds of feet tall.

Ancient beyond comprehension.

The Titan's eyes opened.

Blue light filled the valley.

Jax felt the hunger immediately.

Not malicious.

Not cruel.

Desperate.

Like a starving man watching food.

The Titan took its first breath.

The sound became a hurricane.

Trees bent.

Dust exploded outward.

The survivors nearly fell over.

And then—

A notification appeared.

Not before everyone.

Only before Jax.

Unique Condition Met

Sentinel Recognized

The Warden of the Hollow Heart has offered fealty.

Jax stopped walking.

The world seemed to pause.

Even the Titan faded from focus.

He reread the message.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Offered?

Not Available for Extraction.

Not Eligible for Summoning.

Offered.

The System chimed again.

Would you accept?

Y/N

Jax smiled despite everything happening around him.

"Well that's different."

He selected Yes.

Shadow erupted from the shattered cave entrance.

The survivors screamed.

The Vixens turned.

Dark mana spiraled upward.

Black crystal formed.

Silver lines appeared across polished armor.

A tower shield materialized.

Then a sword.

The figure knelt immediately.

One knee to the ground.

Head bowed.

Not to the Titan.

To Jax.

The mana flames inside the visor burned a calm royal blue.

The System chimed.

S-Rank Shadow Acquired

General-Class Shadow

Name Required

Jax didn't hesitate.

"Warden."

The shadow rose.

Tall.

Regal.

Silent.

For a moment nobody spoke.

Then Warden placed his sword across his chest.

And spoke.

His voice was deep.

Measured.

Ancient.

"My duty is fulfilled."

Everyone froze.

Bunny pointed.

"It talks."

"Yes," Zee whispered.

"It talks."

Nyxian looked personally offended.

"Why does his first sentence sound cooler than anything I've ever said?"

Nobody answered.

Because Warden wasn't looking at them.

He was looking at the Titan.

The enormous being had finally managed to sit upright.

The valley trembled beneath its weight.

Blue eyes slowly focused.

Then settled on the group.

Then on Warden.

The ancient knight lowered his head.

A gesture of respect.

The Titan stared at him.

And for the first time—

The hunger weakened.

Just slightly.

Recognition appeared.

The Titan knew him.

Jax watched the exchange carefully.

"Warden."

The knight turned immediately.

"My liege."

Jax physically flinched.

"No."

A pause.

"No?"

"No liege."

The knight considered that.

"As you command, my liege."

Bunny immediately laughed.

Nyxian doubled over.

Even Llandra smiled.

Jax pinched the bridge of his nose.

"We're working on that."

The Titan finally moved again.

Another step.

Another tremor.

Another village somewhere in the distance moving closer to destruction.

The humor vanished.

Warden turned toward the giant.

For the first time, emotion entered his voice.

Regret.

"He suffers."

Jax looked at him sharply.

The knight met his gaze.

Blue fire flickering softly.

"He always has."

The Titan took another step.

The earth cracked.

And everyone realized the same terrible truth.

The dungeon had never been the threat.

The dungeon had been the cage.

And now the prisoner was free.
