Chapter 83 - chapter 81

Peggy's Question

Peggy Carter had faced down HYDRA agents, stared into the eyes of war criminals, and walked unflinching into danger.

Yet standing in front of Alexander Ashborn, she felt more nervous than she ever had on a battlefield.

They were alone—just outside the mansion grounds, evening light stretching long shadows across the stone.

"Alex," she said, voice steady despite her pulse, "there's something I need to ask you."

He turned to her fully, attentive, patient.

"You're… different," Peggy continued. "The man I met in that alley—the one who saw me—"

She clenched her fists.

"And the man I see at events, meetings, among crowds… they feel like two different people."

She met his eyes, searching.

"Which one is real?"

Alex was silent for a moment.

Then he smiled—soft, amused, genuine.

Instead of answering, he asked calmly,

"Which one do you like, Peggy?"

Her breath caught.

She didn't hesitate.

"The one in the back alley," she said. "The one who didn't look at me like a soldier… or a tool… but like a person."

Alex laughed quietly—low, warm, unguarded.

"That figures."

Before Peggy could react, he stepped forward.

In one smooth motion, he placed a hand beside her head, gently pinning her against the wall—not aggressively, not threateningly.

Just close.

Too close.

Their faces were inches apart.

Five centimeters.

Peggy's heart thundered in her chest, so loud she was sure he could hear it. Her breath shortened, heat flooding her cheeks as those molten-gold eyes locked onto hers.

Alex leaned in—

Not to her lips.

But to her cheek.

A light, lingering kiss.

When he pulled back, his voice was soft.

"I'll tell you everything," he said, "when the time is right."

Then he stepped away.

And left.

The Aftermath

Peggy stood there for exactly three seconds.

Then her knees gave out.

She slid down the wall, landing on the ground, one hand pressed to her chest, the other covering her burning cheek.

Her heart refused to slow.

"…Idiot," she whispered—to herself.

She stared at the sky, breath shaky, a smile she couldn't suppress spreading across her face.

There was no confusion anymore.

No doubt.

"I've fallen for him," Peggy admitted softly.

And the realization didn't scare her.

Hera — A Queen's Approval

Hera watched from the balcony above.

She had seen it all.

The hesitation.

The courage.

The restraint.

When Peggy finally stood and walked away—still blushing, still dazed—Hera smiled.

"She's strong," Hera said thoughtfully.

Alex paused beside her.

"You noticed."

"She didn't demand answers," Hera continued. "She didn't push. She trusted."

Hera folded her arms, eyes warm.

"I like her."

Alex chuckled.

"I had a feeling you would."

Hera glanced at him sideways.

"And if she joins this family one day…"

She smirked faintly.

"I'll make sure she's protected."

Alex looked at her, touched.

"I know."

The city lights flickered below them—fragile, defiant, human.

And somewhere within that vast, uncertain world, a woman named Peggy Carter had just crossed a line she could never uncross.

Not into danger.

But into love.
