The World Thinks Captain America Is Dead
The war ended in fire and silence.
HYDRA was crushed.
Red Skull vanished.
And Captain America—Steve Rogers—was declared dead, lost with the Valkyrie beneath the ice of Antarctica.
America mourned a hero.
Peggy Carter stood among the celebrations, the music, the flags waving high… and felt only emptiness.
She smiled when expected.
Clapped when required.
But every night, she remembered.
The missions where bullets missed her by inches.
The times darkness moved where it shouldn't.
The fear she felt—not of death, but of something vast watching over her.
Alex.
She was sure of it now.
Peggy Demands the Truth
She found him that evening.
Alex stood alone on a quiet balcony, city lights stretching endlessly below.
"Alex."
He turned.
And smiled.
The same smile from the alley.
The one she fell for.
Peggy didn't waste time.
"What are you?" she demanded.
Alex tilted his head. "Is that how you ask the man you've been dreaming about?"
Her breath hitched.
"You know," she said softly, then suddenly grabbed his collar and slammed him against the wall. "I don't need protection. I can fight. I can bleed. I can survive."
Alex laughed—low, warm, dangerously fond.
His hand rose, cupping her cheek.
"And yet," he murmured, "you're making me fall for you, Peggy."
Her resolve shattered.
Tears slipped free.
"I don't want to be protected from the dark," she whispered. "I want to stand in it with you. Believe me."
Alex's expression softened completely.
He pulled her into a tight embrace.
"I do."
A Confession Answered
He held her as she cried, the weight of war finally breaking free.
Peggy pressed her forehead against his chest.
"I love you, Alex," she said. "I want to be with you."
Before Alex could answer—
"Well," a familiar voice said with amusement, "this escalated quickly."
Hera stepped forward, arms crossed, eyes bright with approval.
"I like her already, Alex."
Peggy stiffened. "Hera—?"
Alex nodded calmly. "My wife."
Peggy's eyes widened—
—but she didn't pull away.
Alex looked down at her. "Still want the truth?"
She swallowed. "…Yes."
The Shadow Revealed
Alex's gaze shifted.
"Darkrai."
The shadows bent.
Darkrai emerged from the darkness itself, kneeling before Alex.
Peggy froze.
Her heart pounded—but not with fear.
Recognition flooded her.
"It was you," she whispered. "You saved me."
Darkrai inclined his head respectfully.
Peggy stepped forward, steady despite the impossible sight before her.
"…Thank you," she said sincerely.
Darkrai bowed once more—and vanished.
The Truth, At Last
Peggy looked back at Alex.
"You're not human."
"No," Alex admitted gently.
She exhaled slowly—then smiled through tears.
"…Good. Humans keep dying around me."
Alex laughed quietly.
He leaned down, resting his forehead against hers.
"I will tell you everything," he promised. "No lies. No shadows between us."
Hera nodded approvingly.
"Welcome to the madness, Agent Carter."
Peggy squeezed Alex's hand.
"I'm not going anywhere."
And for the first time since Steve's fall, Peggy Carter felt safe—not because she was protected…
…but because she had chosen the one standing in the darkness with her.
