The Morning After
The mansion felt… different.
Not awkward.
Not tense.
Just quietly changed.
Breakfast was slower than usual.
Eyes lingered longer.
Smiles were softer.
No one rushed away.
Alex moved through the kitchen like always—calm, steady—but everyone noticed the way he checked on each of them.
Retsu offered tea without a word.
Morgan watched him thoughtfully.
Scáthach simply nodded, as if acknowledging an unspoken truth.
Gwen felt lighter.
Jennifer felt steadier.
Helen felt… chosen.
Felicia teased less and listened more.
Skye stopped pretending her feelings were temporary.
Veronica stayed close—naturally, instinctively.
Nothing was forced.
Nothing was demanded.
But something had settled into place.
They weren't confused anymore.
They were sure.
A New Kind of Bond
Alex didn't change.
That was what surprised them most.
He still cooked.
Still listened.
Still made time—individually, carefully.
If anything—
He was gentler.
More attentive.
And that made their feelings deepen rather than fade.
There was no jealousy.
No insecurity.
Just trust.
The Call That Shattered the Calm
The phone rang in the afternoon.
Veronica answered.
Pepper's voice was shaking.
"Veronica… it's Obadiah. He's behind it. Afghanistan. Everything."
Veronica's blood ran cold.
Before Pepper could say more—
Veronica was already turning to Alex.
Something was wrong.
Deeply wrong.
"I need you," she said quietly.
Alex nodded instantly.
The Mansion — Stark Side
They arrived too late.
Or so it seemed.
Tony lay on the couch.
Unmoving.
The arc reactor was gone.
Veronica froze.
"…Tony?"
Alex didn't hesitate.
He moved.
Fast.
Into the lab.
He found the device—discarded, damaged, stolen too roughly.
Alex's hands glowed faintly with controlled cosmic warmth as he repaired it in seconds.
Then—
He returned.
Placed it back against Tony's chest.
And pressed.
Power surged.
Tony gasped violently.
He sat up, coughing.
Veronica cried out and hugged him tightly.
"Hey—hey—easy," Tony rasped. "I'm alive. That's… new."
Alex looked at him calmly.
"It was Obadiah," Tony said grimly.
"He's been pulling the strings since Afghanistan."
Tony stood.
Anger burned in his eyes.
"I'm ending this."
Iron Man Rises
Tony didn't wait.
He activated the Mark III.
Metal sealed around him.
"Take care of her," Tony said to Alex.
Alex nodded once.
Always.
Tony launched into the sky.
Separation — For Now
Alex turned to Veronica.
"You're going back to Ashborn Mansion."
She opened her mouth to argue.
Then saw his expression.
"…Okay," she said quietly.
He hugged her once—firm, reassuring.
"I'll be back."
She nodded.
She trusted him.
Toward the Endgame
Alex arrived at Stark Industries moments later.
The building felt tense.
Heavy.
Red Queen's voice echoed softly.
"Obadiah Stane is mobilizing."
Alex's eyes sharpened.
So.
The line had finally been crossed.
And this time—
The Phoenix Monarch would not stay silent.
