BOOK TWO: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE GATE
Chapter 6: The Heart of Memories
The roar shook the entire Hall of Echoes.
Cracks spread across the marble floor.
Several floating memory crystals shattered, releasing thousands of glowing fragments into the air.
The little silver-haired girl stumbled backward.
"They've reached the lower chamber..."
Her voice trembled.
"We're running out of time."
Riva looked at the staircase of light leading toward the glowing crystal heart.
"The Memory Core..."
Elian nodded.
"If it falls, every memory protected by this Hall will disappear forever."
Eva tightened her grip on the compass.
"We're going down."
"No."
Everyone turned toward Elian.
"If all of us leave, no one will protect the entrance."
Cassian and Orion were still fighting outside.
The Hall itself had become the last line of defense.
Before anyone could decide—
The massive stone door behind them exploded inward.
A wave of black mist rushed inside.
Cassian slid across the floor, his white armor covered in cracks.
Behind him came Orion, breathing heavily, his sword stained with black crystal dust.
"They broke through," Orion said.
"The Gate Hunters are inside."
Three faceless Gate Hunters entered the Hall.
Behind them marched dozens of shadow creatures.
Unlike before, these shadows carried ancient weapons made of dark crystal.
The leader pointed its spear toward the silver-haired girl.
"The Child of Memory."
"Return her."
The little girl hid behind Riva.
"I won't go back."
Riva stepped in front of her.
"Then no one is taking you."
The leader tilted its head.
"You do not understand."
"She does not belong here."
"She belongs beyond the Gate."
Silence filled the Hall.
Aarvi frowned.
"What does that even mean?"
The Gate Hunter answered calmly.
"She is the final memory of the First Kingdom."
Everyone froze.
"The... First Kingdom?"
Elian slowly lowered his head.
"So it's true..."
Riva looked at him.
"You knew?"
"I only knew the legends."
"The First Kingdom existed before Aurelia."
"It was the kingdom that built the Gates."
Eva whispered,
"So everything started there..."
The Gate Hunter continued.
"When the First Kingdom vanished..."
"One memory refused to disappear."
It pointed toward the little girl.
"Her."
The little girl closed her eyes.
"I don't remember..."
"I don't remember anything..."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Parna gently hugged her.
"It's alright."
"You don't have to remember alone."
At those words—
The flowers growing around the Hall suddenly bloomed.
Bright blue petals covered the floor.
The little girl looked at Parna and smiled for the first time.
Then—
The entire mountain shook violently.
A deafening crack echoed from below.
The Memory Core pulsed faster.
Boom...
Boom...
Boom...
Like a frightened heartbeat.
Elian's expression changed.
"No..."
"It's awake."
Before anyone could ask what he meant—
A gigantic black hand burst through the floor beneath the staircase.
Stone exploded in every direction.
The crystal stairs shattered.
A monstrous creature slowly climbed out of the darkness.
It was nearly thirty feet tall.
Its body looked as though it had been carved from broken memories.
Thousands of glowing faces appeared and disappeared across its skin.
Some cried.
Some screamed.
Some begged for help.
Aarvi stepped back.
"What... is that?"
The little girl whispered one name.
"The Memory Eater."
The creature opened dozens of glowing eyes.
Every eye looked at a different person.
When one eye looked at Eva—
She suddenly forgot why she was holding the compass.
She stared at it in confusion.
"What is this?"
Another eye turned toward Parna.
She blinked.
"The flowers..."
"Why are they following me?"
One by one—
Everyone began losing pieces of themselves.
Riva suddenly couldn't remember the orphanage.
Aarvi forgot her uncle's face.
Orion forgot Cassian's name.
The Memory Eater wasn't attacking their bodies.
It was eating who they were.
"No!"
Elian shouted.
"Don't look into its eyes!"
Too late.
The creature roared.
A massive wave of silver-black energy swept through the Hall.
Hundreds of memory crystals shattered.
The little girl cried out in pain.
Her body began turning transparent.
"The Hall..."
"It's dying..."
Riva forced herself to stand.
She grabbed Eva's hand.
"Listen to me!"
Eva looked confused.
"Do I know you?"
Riva's heart sank.
The Memory Eater had already stolen part of Eva's memories.
Then...
Riva remembered something the Keeper had once said.
"Memories shared by hearts cannot be erased easily."
She immediately shouted,
"Everyone!"
"Tell each other who you are!"
Aarvi blinked.
"What?"
"Quick!"
Parna grabbed Eva's shoulders.
"You are Eva."
"Your grandmother protected the compass for you."
"You always solve the mysteries."
Eva stared at her.
Then slowly...
Recognition returned.
"I'm..."
"Eva."
The compass glowed brilliantly.
Its light pushed back the darkness around her.
Cassian looked toward Orion.
"You are Orion."
"The strongest Guardian of Aurelia."
"You never abandon your friends."
Orion's empty expression slowly disappeared.
His sword burst with silver light once more.
Aarvi took Riva's hands.
"You are Riva."
"You grew up in an orphanage."
"You always saw the future."
"But you chose your own destiny."
Riva smiled.
"I remember..."
One by one, the Five Heirs restored each other's memories.
The Hall responded.
The floating crystals stopped breaking.
The Memory Core glowed brighter.
The Memory Eater roared in anger.
Its body began cracking.
Elian smiled.
"Now I understand."
"The Hall doesn't survive because of stored memories."
"It survives because memories are shared."
The little girl raised both hands.
The Memory Core answered her call.
A beam of brilliant silver light shot upward.
It struck the Memory Eater directly.
The creature screamed as thousands of stolen memories escaped its body.
Faces filled with relief rose into the air before dissolving into stars.
Within moments...
The giant creature collapsed into countless glowing fragments.
Silence returned.
The Hall was safe.
For now.
The little girl walked toward Riva.
She placed something into Riva's hand.
It was a tiny crystal shaped like a tear.
"What is this?" Riva asked.
The little girl smiled gently.
"My first memory."
"When the time comes..."
"It will show you the truth."
Before Riva could ask another question—
The entire Hall began glowing.
The floating crystals moved together, forming a giant map in the air.
This map was different from every map they had seen before.
It showed seven ancient Gates scattered across the world.
Six of them glowed faintly.
But the seventh...
Hidden beneath a black mountain...
Was already completely open.
Elian's face turned pale.
"No..."
Cassian looked up.
"What is it?"
Elian pointed toward the seventh Gate.
"That's not the Gate we came through."
"It's another one."
"And if it's already open..."
He looked at the Five Heirs with fear in his eyes.
"...then someone else has entered our world."
