BOOK TWO: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE GATE
Chapter 15: The Keeper of Time
The ancient doors of the Silent Observatory closed behind them with a deep metallic echo.
Boom.
The sound traveled through the endless halls like the heartbeat of the tower itself.
For a moment, no one spoke.
The old man stood quietly beneath a hanging clock that was larger than a castle gate. Silver flames flickered inside the lantern he carried, casting moving shadows across the marble floor.
Behind him stretched an endless hallway.
Thousands of clocks hung from the ceiling.
Some were made of gold.
Some of crystal.
Some appeared broken.
Some moved backward instead of forward.
Others had no hands at all.
Every clock ticked at a different rhythm.
The sound filled the Observatory.
Tick...
Tick...
Tick...
Like countless hearts beating together.
---
Aarvi looked around with wide eyes.
"This place gives me nightmares already."
The old man chuckled.
"It gives everyone nightmares the first time."
Cassian stepped protectively in front of the group.
"Who are you?"
The old man bowed politely.
"My name is Alaric."
"I am the Keeper of Time."
Silence.
Riva frowned.
"You're... the Keeper?"
Alaric smiled gently.
"One of them."
"There were once twelve."
"Now..."
He looked around the empty halls.
"I am the last."
---
Eva stepped closer.
"The Chrono Watch..."
"It belonged to you?"
Alaric lifted the silver watch in his hand.
"No."
"It belonged to my student."
He looked toward Lucien.
"Your future self."
Everyone froze.
Lucien's breathing became uneven.
"You trained... me?"
Alaric nodded.
"For many years."
"I taught you how to walk through broken time."
Lucien stared silently at the floor.
"If that's true..."
"Then why don't I remember you?"
Alaric's smile slowly faded.
"Because you haven't met me yet."
---
Aarvi rubbed her forehead.
"My brain officially hurts."
Even Caelum laughed quietly.
"Time has always been difficult to explain."
---
Alaric turned toward the enormous clock hanging above the hall.
"I didn't summon you here to explain the future."
"I summoned you because history is repeating itself."
He raised his lantern.
Silver flames expanded across the room.
The walls disappeared.
In their place appeared a gigantic map of the worlds connected by the Gates.
There were dozens.
Not seven.
Not eight.
Dozens of different realms floated like islands in an endless sea of stars.
Some glowed brightly.
Others had already faded into darkness.
Riva whispered,
"There are so many..."
Alaric nodded.
"Aurelia was never the only kingdom."
"The First Kingdom was never alone."
"The Gates connected every world."
---
Suddenly—
One glowing world disappeared.
It simply...
Vanished.
No explosion.
No sound.
One moment it existed.
The next...
Nothing.
Parna gasped.
"What happened?"
Alaric lowered his eyes.
"It was consumed."
"By what?"
Silence.
Then one word.
"The Devourer."
---
The room became cold.
Eva looked toward the crystal sphere inside her broken compass.
"The Devourer..."
"Is it a person?"
Alaric answered slowly.
"It once was."
No one expected that answer.
Caelum closed his eyes.
"So you've decided to tell them."
"We no longer have a choice."
Alaric replied.
---
He pointed toward another glowing world.
"This kingdom disappeared nearly three thousand years ago."
Then another.
"And this one."
"And this one."
One after another...
Entire civilizations vanished from the map.
"They weren't destroyed."
"They were erased."
"The Devourer feeds upon memories."
"The moment no one remembers a kingdom..."
"It ceases to exist."
Riva suddenly remembered the Memory Eater.
"So that's why memories matter."
Alaric nodded.
"Exactly."
"Memories are the foundation of reality."
---
Without warning—
The giant clock above them struck once.
Dong...
Every clock inside the Observatory stopped moving.
Silence swallowed the hall.
Alaric's expression changed immediately.
"They're here."
Cassian drew his sword.
"So soon?"
"No."
Alaric whispered.
"They've been here."
The silver flames inside the lantern suddenly turned black.
Cracks spread across the marble floor.
A freezing wind swept through the Observatory.
The shadows beneath the clocks began moving.
Not because of light.
Because something was crawling through them.
One shadow...
Then another.
Then hundreds.
Dark human figures slowly climbed out of the darkness.
Unlike the Gate Hunters...
These creatures had faces.
But every face belonged to someone the Six Heirs knew.
Riva saw children from the orphanage.
Eva saw her grandmother.
Parna saw the first Star Bearer.
Aarvi saw her uncle.
Lucien saw his father.
Orion saw a woman whose face he almost remembered.
Alaric spoke firmly.
"Do not attack."
"They aren't real."
"They're the Echoes of Regret."
The shadows smiled.
Each one whispered the same sentence.
"If you had chosen differently..."
The room shifted.
Suddenly each member of the group stood inside a different illusion.
---
Riva found herself back at the orphanage.
The children laughed together.
No strange visions.
No mysterious Gate.
A normal life.
The matron smiled.
"You don't have to leave."
"You can stay."
For a brief moment...
Riva wanted to.
---
Eva stood inside her grandmother's house.
Her grandmother was alive.
Preparing tea.
Smiling warmly.
"You've solved enough mysteries."
"Come home."
Eva's hands trembled.
---
Aarvi saw her uncle laughing as he built wooden toys.
He looked healthy.
Alive.
"You're late."
"I've been waiting."
Tears filled Aarvi's eyes.
---
Parna walked through endless fields of flowers.
Nature whispered peacefully around her.
"No more battles."
"No more Gates."
"Just stay."
---
Lucien stood inside the palace of the First Kingdom.
His parents sat upon their thrones.
The kingdom still lived.
No war.
No destruction.
His father smiled proudly.
"Welcome home, my son."
Lucien closed his eyes.
He almost stepped forward.
Then...
He remembered the older Lucien.
"History has been rewritten many times."
His eyes snapped open.
"This isn't real."
He drew his sword.
The illusion shattered like glass.
At the same moment...
The Star Mark on his hand burst with brilliant silver light.
The light spread through every illusion.
Riva remembered why she had left the orphanage.
Eva remembered her grandmother's final wish.
Parna remembered the Hall of Echoes.
Aarvi remembered her uncle giving her the mysterious box.
One by one...
Every illusion collapsed.
The Echoes of Regret screamed before dissolving into silver dust.
Silence returned.
Alaric smiled.
"You've passed the Observatory's first trial."
Eva frowned.
"That wasn't an attack."
"No."
Alaric answered.
"It was a question."
"What question?"
He looked at each of them.
"Would you choose the past... even if it meant abandoning the future?"
No one answered.
Because they already had.
Then...
The great clock above them ticked again.
The minute hand moved forward.
12:00
A deafening alarm echoed throughout the Silent Observatory.
Far below...
Beyond every world...
Beyond every Gate...
Something ancient smiled.
The countdown...
Had ended.
End of Chapter 15
