Evening softened the city. The heat of the day had faded, replaced by warm lights and slow-moving streets. Shops were closing, conversations drifting lazily through the air, and everything felt ordinary. Somehow, that was what unsettled suo ran the most. He had just stepped out of a small bookstore, a paper bag tucked beneath one arm, when he felt it that familiar pressure, quiet and deliberate. "You walk like you're trying not to be followed."
Suo ran stopped instantly and turned. Cai lang stood a few steps behind him with his hands in the pockets of a dark charcoal coat. A black shirt showed beneath the open coat, and the evening light caught briefly against the silver watch on his wrist. His posture looked relaxed, but his eyes were sharp as ever. Suo ran frowned. "You shouldn't sneak up on people."Cai lang tilted his head slightly."I didn't. You were distracted." Suo ran's expression changed. "By what?" And cai lang smiled and said,"By thinking you were alone."
Suo ran rolled his eyes and started walking again. "You really enjoy saying strange things, don't you?" Cai lang fell into step beside him effortlessly. "Only when they happen to be true." Suo ran shot him an irritated look. "You're impossible." "You keep saying that." "Because you keep proving it." Cai Lang's smile widened slightly. "And yet you keep talking to me." Suo ran looked away. "Unfortunately." "That sounded less convincing than you intended."Suo ran clicked his tongue in annoyance and adjusted the strap of his messenger bag. He wore a dark gray hoodie beneath a lightweight black jacket, the sleeves pushed carelessly toward his elbows. His hair was slightly messy from the wind, making him look younger than he wanted to. Cai Lang noticed. Suo ran noticed him noticing. "Stop staring." Cai lang blinked once. "I wasn't." "You were." "You noticed." "That's not the point." "Then what is?"
Suo ran opened his mouth, then closed it again. Cai lang looked far too pleased with himself. For a moment neither spoke. The streetlights flickered on one after another, stretching long shadows across the sidewalk. Finally Cai Lang broke the silence. "You're avoiding me." Suo ran glanced at him. "You keep saying that." Cai lang shortened the distance between them by half a step. "And you keep proving it." Suo ran immediately moved away. Cai Lang raised an eyebrow. "See?" "See what?" "That." "I literally moved one step." "Exactly." "You're ridiculous." "And you're defensive."
Suo Ran sighed dramatically. "Why are you even here?" Cai Lang looked ahead. "Walking." "Try again." "Breathing." "Cai Lang." "Talking to you." Suo ran groaned. "Finally, an honest answer." A Cai Lang laughed and that sound irritated suo ran more than it should have. "I don't owe you explanations," Suo ran said. Cai Lang nodded. "I didn't ask for one." "Then what do you want?" Cai Lang's gaze settled on him. "Honesty." Suo ran stopped walking. Cai lang stopped too.
The crowd moved around them without paying attention. "Why are you watching me?" Suo ran asked quietly. Cai lang met his gaze. "Because people who don't look afraid usually are." Suo Ran frowned immediately. "That's not an answer." "It is." "No." "It's just not a comfortable one." Suo ran folded his arms. "You don't get to decide what I do." Cai Lang stepped closer not touching, but close enough that Suo ran became aware of the warmth radiating from him. "I know." His voice softened slightly. "That's why I'm telling you instead of stopping you."
Suo ran hated the effect those words had on him. "Telling me what?" "To be careful." "And if I don't listen?" Cai lang studied him for several seconds. "You won't." "You sound very confident." "You sound very predictable." Suo ran scoffed. "Maybe I don't mind risk."Something changed in Cai Lang's expression. The amusement faded. "That's exactly what worries me." Before Suo ran could respond, his phone vibrated inside his pocket. Once then again.
He frowned and pulled it out it was Unknown Number. His stomach tightened instantly. The moment he opened the message, the sounds of the city seemed to disappear. *They found it.They know you still have it. * His fingers went cold. Memories surged forward before he could stop them. Running. Shadows. Fear. The thing he had spent months pretending was over. He had thought he buried it. Thought enough time had passed. Thought nobody was still looking. "Suo Ran!" Cai Lang's voice came suddenly. Much closer this time.
Suo ran looked up sharply. Cai lang was watching him carefully now. "You're pale." Suo ran locked his phone and shoved it back into his pocket. "I'm fine." Cai lang stared at him. "That's a lie." "You don't know that." "I do." "How?" Cai lang stepped closer. "Because your hands are shaking."
Instinctively, Suo ran hid them behind his back. Cai lang noticed immediately. "See?" "Stop doing that." "Doing what?" "Noticing everything." A faint smile appeared. "No." Suo Ran exhaled sharply. "You don't get to read my face like that." Cai lang's eyes never left him. "I do when your pulse changes the second you look at a message." "That's creepy." "It's accurate." "Still creepy." For a split second amusement flashed through Cai lang's eyes before disappearing again. "What happened?" Suo ran looked away. "Nothing." "Suo ran!" "Drop it." Cai lang crossed his arms. "No." "Why?" "Why?" "Because whatever scared you enough to make that face isn't nothing." The answer struck harder than Suo Ran expected.
Cai lang stepped closer again. "Is it connected to the thing you ran with that night?" Suo ran froze and his breath caught. "You knew?" Cai lang shook his head once. "I suspected." "How?" "People don't disappear without carrying something dangerous."Suo ran clenched his jaw. "Then why are you still standing here?" Cai lang stared at him for several moments. "Because whatever followed you then has started moving again." Suo ran's stomach dropped. "You're sure?" Cai lang nodded once. "Too sure." "I told you to be careful." "You tell me that every time I see you." "And every time you ignore it." "I didn't ask for your protection."
Cai Lang's eyes darkened slightly, not with anger but frustration. "This isn't about what you asked for." He stepped closer and lowered his voice. "It's about what you triggered." Suo ran looked away. "I won't drag you into this." Cai lang immediately answered. "You already did." Then another vibration buzzed inside suo ran's pocket. His heart sank. He looked down there was one word. *Soon.* Cai lang saw the tension return instantly and his expression sharpened. "That decides it."
Suo ran frowned. "Decides what?" Cai lang turned immediately."Come with me." "Where?" "Somewhere they won't expect." He started walking and suo ran remained where he was. Cai lang stopped after several steps and looked back. "Are you coming?" Suo ran stared at him. Part of him wanted to refuse. Why should I listen to him? He thought. He's not my bodyguard. He's not my friend and I barely know him. Another part of him remembered the message and remembered the fear.
Cai lang watched him silently. Then he sighed. "You're overthinking again." Suo ran frowned. "I am not." "You are." "Stop acting like you know me." Cai Lang's expression softened just slightly. "Then stop proving me right." For some reason that made Suo ran even more annoyed. Yet despite himself, he found his feet moving. Cai lang noticed and a faint smile appeared. "Good choice." Suo ran walked beside him with obvious irritation. "Don't sound so pleased." "Too late." "You're unbelievable." "You still followed me." Suo ran groaned and cai Lang laughed quietly. And as they disappeared into the evening crowd together.
