Chapter 35 - No Safe Place Left

The photograph lay on the table long after no one could bear to look at it, and the apartment felt smaller now, not like a home anymore but like something sealed and watched, while Jun wei had been gently sent to the bedroom with Lian ziho's quiet promise of cartoons and warm milk; the boy had gone reluctantly, pausing at the doorway twice as if sensing the change in the air even if he couldn't understand it, and once the door closed behind him, the silence that remained felt heavier than before.

Suo ran stood with both hands braced against the table, staring down at the bus ticket as his voice broke the stillness in a low whisper, "I brought him here." and the weight of it made his shoulders tense as if he was holding himself up by force alone.Cai Lang didn't hesitate, his voice steady but firm as he replied, "They would have followed him anywhere." and when Suo Ran immediately countered, "That doesn't make it better," Cai Lang nodded once, conceding without softening the truth as he said, "No… it doesn't."

Across the room,Lian ziho leaned against the wall, arms crossed tightly, his gaze fixed on the photograph with a focus that had lost its earlier warmth, and after a long pause he spoke quietly, "They're escalating. This isn't surveillance anymore. It's leverage." and the word landed in the room like something physical, making everything feel more real and more dangerous at once.

Cai Lang picked up the photograph again, his fingers tightening around it until the edges bent slightly, and he said in a low, controlled voice, "They won't get another chance." which made Suo Ran look up sharply as he asked, "What does that mean?" Cai Lang met his eyes without hesitation and replied, "It means he doesn't leave this apartment without protection." and when Suo Ran demanded, "And when they come here?"

Cai Lang's expression didn't change as he said simply, "They'll have to come through me." and though the sentence was calm, it carried something absolute beneath it. Lian Ziho watched the exchange in silence, something tightening quietly in his chest not jealousy, but a clear understanding that Cai Lang had already stepped beyond hesitation, and when he finally spoke, his voice was steady as he said, "I'll stay." making both men turn toward him at once.

Suo Ran immediately objected, "This isn't your fight." but Lian Ziho's expression remained unchanged as he replied, "You stopped believing that days ago." and the truth of it left Suo Ran silent, unable to argue further. Cai Lang studied Lian ziho for a long moment before saying, "If you stay, you become part of this." and Lian Ziho answered without hesitation, "I already am." and the silence that followed wasn't comfortable or warm, but it settled anyway, heavy and unspoken, until Cai Lang finally gave a single nod an agreement without words, not trust, not friendship, but something close enough that, for now, they all stood on the same side.

Inside the bedroom, Jun wei sat cross-legged on the bed, staring at the cartoon playing on Lian ziho's tablet, but not really watching it, and when Suo ran entered the room, the boy looked up immediately and asked softly, "Are we leaving?" his voice careful in a way that made Suo ran's chest tighten.

Suo ran knelt in front of him, forcing his expression to stay gentle as he replied, "No. You're staying with me." and Jun Wei studied him for a moment before saying quietly, "You're scared." which made Suo Ran pause because the honesty was too direct to dodge, and he answered carefully, "I'm careful." though it didn't sound fully convincing even to himself. Jun wei didn't argue, instead leaning forward and wrapping his small arms around him in a tight, trusting hug, and Suo ran froze for a second before slowly closing his eyes, because the warmth of it felt heavier than anything else he had carried.

Later, when Jun wei finally fell asleep, Suo ran closed the bedroom door gently and stood there for a moment, hand still resting on the handle, listening to the steady rhythm of his breathing on the other side, and then the fragile control he had been holding finally broke as he stepped into the hallway.

His knees weakened immediately, and he caught himself against the wall, a broken sound escaping his throat as he whispered, "This is my fault… I brought this to him." his voice shaking as it spilled out, "If I hadn't opened that envelope… if I had left it buried…" and the rest collapsed into a quiet sob he tried desperately to swallow.

Lian Ziho heard it from the living room and stepped out slowly, stopping when he saw Suo ran like that no defenses, no distance, just completely undone and for a moment he didn't speak, then moved closer and said softly, "Suo Ran…" before placing a careful hand on his arm. Suo ran didn't respond, only shook with silent tension, and Lian ziho said gently, "You didn't do this." but Suo Ran let out a broken, disbelieving laugh and whispered,"Didn't I?" which made Lian ziho's expression tighten as he answered, "If you hadn't searched for the truth, it would still be there. The danger was always there. You just found it." and when Suo Ran said hoarsely, "That doesn't make Jun wei safer." Lian Ziho replied without hesitation, "No… but it means he has someone who will fight for him."

Suo Ran's eyes were red when he looked up and admitted quietly, "I'm tired… I'm so tired of losing people." and something in Lian ziho's chest tightened before he pulled him into a steady, quiet embrace, not forceful, not demanding, just there, and Suo ran hesitated only a moment before gripping the back of his shirt tightly, breathing through it.

Cai Lang arrived then, stopping a few steps away, taking in the scene Suo ran broken, Lian ziho holding him, the silence heavy between them and after a moment he said quietly, "It's not your fault." which made Suo ran close his eyes again as Cai lang stepped closer and continued, "If they wanted leverage, they would have found it anyway. You didn't create this. You just became the one standing in front of it."

Suo Ran's voice came out rough as he asked, "And what if I can't protect him?" and Cai Lang answered immediately, without hesitation, "Then you won't stand alone," and Lian Ziho glanced at him at that, not in challenge but in agreement, because for the first time none of them contradicted each other.

Later, they sat together on the couch without deciding to, Suo ran in the middle with his hands clasped tightly, Lian ziho leaning back exhausted, and Cai lang forward and alert, already thinking in layers of risk, and after a long silence Suo Ran whispered, "Thank you… for staying." and none of them answered, because they didn't need to.

When Cai Lang's phone rang later and he stepped onto the balcony to answer, the voice on the other end said coldly, "You've been busy. Return the scroll." and when Cai Lang refused, "No." the reply came sharper, "You're choosing sentiment over duty." to which Cai Lang said quietly, "I'm choosing not to become you." and after a pause the voice warned, "You're being watched." before ending the call.

Inside, Cai Lang returned and said flatly, "They know about Jun Wei." and Suo Ran went pale as he whispered, "He said that?" while Lian ziho replied after a moment, "Then we stop reacting. We start moving." but Cai lang added quietly, "You can't protect him and the scroll." and the words landed heavily because Suo Ran already understood that truth.

Later that night, Jun Wei stirred in his sleep and whispered, "Gege… don't let them take me." and Suo Ran immediately leaned in and answered, voice breaking but firm, "I won't," and this time it wasn't just comfort it was a vow. At 3:17 AM, the power flickered and died, plunging the apartment into darkness, and Jun Wei woke instantly, clinging to Suo ran as Lian ziho reached for a flashlight and Cai lang moved toward the door without hesitation, while a faint metallic sound echoed outside, dragging slowly across the hallway floor.

Suo ran's pulse roared in his ears as he whispered, "They're here…" and a calm voice from outside followed immediately, "We're not here for the child." then after a pause, "Open the door. We can still resolve this quietly." and Cai Lang's hand tightened on the handle as Lian ziho stepped closer, Jun Wei gripping Suo ran tightly, while Suo ran realized with terrifying clarity that there was no version of this night that ended without loss as the door handle began to turn.
