Chapter 53 - Is that important?

The final school bell rang. The sharp sound rushed through the corridors.Children came out of their classrooms laughing, backpacks bouncing against their shoulders as they raced toward the stairs. Their excited voices echoed through the hallways, filling the school with the familiar chaos that always came at the end of the day. Jun Wei jumped to his feet the instant the bell stopped ringing, his face lighting up with excitement. "Finally!" he cheered. Chen Yu laughed as he slung his backpack over one shoulder and looked at him curiously. "You're always this excited?"

Jun Wei nodded with complete seriousness, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. "After a mission day, you need snacks." Chen Yu blinked in confusion. "Mission day?" Jun wei leaned closer with an exaggeratedly mysterious expression and lowered his voice. "I still can't talk about it." Chen Yu stared at him with wide, admiring eyes, completely convinced.

Outside, the front gate quickly became crowded with students searching for their parents while teachers guided everyone safely toward the exit. Teacher Liu stood calmly near the entrance, quietly observing the flow of children with his usual gentle expression. Beside him, Lian Ziho leaned casually against the fence with his arms folded across his chest. Although he appeared relaxed, his eyes never stopped moving. Every unfamiliar face... every passing vehicle... every tiny movement was carefully noted.

The moment Jun Wei spotted him, his face brightened instantly. "Lian Gege!" he shouted happily as he ran over. Lian Ziho straightened and looked the boy over from head to toe before letting out a quiet breath. "You're alive." Jun Wei blinked in confusion before tilting his head. "Was that in doubt?" A faint smile almost appeared on Lian's face, but it disappeared just as quickly. He crouched slightly until they were eye level. "What happened today?" Jun Wei thought carefully for a moment before suddenly remembering. "Oh right!" he exclaimed proudly. "A villain talked to me." Teacher Liu nearly choked beside them and stared at him in disbelief. "What?"

The warmth disappeared from Lian Ziho's expression immediately. His eyes sharpened as he asked in a calm but serious voice, "What did he say?" Jun Wei pointed casually toward the school building behind them. "He said to tell Gege something." Lian frowned slightly. "Which Gege?" Jun Wei answered without hesitation. "Suo ran Gege." Lian Ziho became completely still. Even Teacher Liu noticed the subtle change in his posture. "And the message?" Jun Wei closed his eyes for a second, trying to remember the exact wording. Then he repeated it carefully. "He said..." He paused briefly before continuing. "Tell your brother the library door is already open."

For a brief moment, Lian Ziho's entire expression changed.Teacher Liu noticed immediately. His brows slowly drew together. "Is that... important?" Lian ziho didn't answer. Before he could, movement across the street caught everyone's attention. A familiar car door opened. Suo Ran stepped out.Without wasting another second, Suo ran crossed the street quickly. The moment he saw Jun Wei standing safely beside Lian Ziho, some of the tension in his shoulders eased, but the worry never left his eyes. He immediately knelt in front of the boy, gently holding his shoulders. "Did anything happen?" Jun Wei shook his head. "No."

Suo Ran searched his face carefully before asking another question. "Did anyone talk to you?" Jun Wei nodded innocently. "Just the villain." Suo ran froze. "...What villain?" Jun Wei casually pointed toward the road behind him. "The man from the amusement park." Suo Ran's heart seemed to sink. He stood up instantly and looked around, scanning the street, the parked cars, the sidewalks, every passing face. But the man was gone.

Behind him, Cai Lang stepped out of the car with his usual composed expression. His eyes swept across the area. "Problem?" Suo ran continued searching the street as he answered quietly. "He was here." Lian Ziho nodded once. "Jun wei saw him during recess." Suo ran turned sharply toward him, worry making his voice firmer than he intended. "And you didn't call me?" Lian remained calm. "Nothing happened." Jun Wei raised his hand as though answering a question in class. "I delivered the message." Suo Ran looked back down at him. "What message?" Jun Wei repeated it exactly as before. "The library door is already open."

Suo ran looked across the street once more, unable to shake the feeling that someone was still nearby. "Where is he?" Lian Ziho slowly scanned the surroundings. "He was watching from over there." He pointed toward the opposite sidewalk. The place was empty now. Teacher Liu frowned thoughtfully. "That's strange." Cai Lang calmly slipped both hands into his coat pockets before speaking in an even voice. "Looks like he left." Suo Ran immediately shook his head, unease obvious in both his face and voice. "They wouldn't just leave." Lian ziho glanced quietly toward Cai Lang again. Something about his response felt... wrong. But for now, he kept the thought to himself.

The man who had watched the school all day had disappeared completely.Teacher Liu continued studying the road with a puzzled expression. "That's strange." Suo ran searched the area again, frustration beginning to show. "They were here." Lian Ziho nodded slowly. "Yes." Cai Lang remained perfectly calm, both hands still resting inside his coat pockets. "Looks like they left." Once again, Lian ziho watched him from the corner of his eye. Cai Lang didn't seem relieved. He didn't seem surprised. In fact... he looked as though he had expected this outcome all along.

Two streets away, hidden behind a quiet row of closed shops, a dark van sat motionless inside a narrow alley. Rainwater dripped steadily from rusted pipes overhead, the only sound breaking the silence. Inside the van, the man who had spent the day watching the school struggled against thick plastic restraints binding his wrists. His breathing had become ragged as panic slowly replaced confidence. "Let me go!" he shouted, twisting helplessly against the ties. Sitting across from him were two silent men dressed in dark clothing. One of them simply lifted a small phone and spoke into it with complete composure. "He's awake." A calm voice answered from the other end. "Good." The captive man's entire body suddenly went still. His eyes widened with disbelief as recognition struck him. His breathing caught in his throat before he whispered in shock, "Cai Lang."

Inside the van, the two men exchanged quiet glances but remained completely silent, their expressions unreadable as they watched the prisoner. The man leaned back against the metal wall and let out a weak, mocking laugh despite the ropes cutting into his wrists. "You people move fast?" he said with a crooked smile, trying to hide the uneasiness creeping into his voice. The phone resting on the seat remained silent for several long seconds, making the cramped space feel even heavier.

Then Cai Lang's calm voice came through the speaker. "Who sent you?" The man slowly lifted his head, meeting the guards' cold stares before answering with quiet confidence. "You already know." Cai Lang's tone never changed. " I want Names."The prisoner smirked again, though this time it looked more forced than before. "You think they'd trust me with names?" he asked with a dry chuckle. Cai Lang didn't react. "You've been watching the boy for three days." The man shrugged carelessly. "Maybe I like children."

Before the sentence had fully left his mouth, one of the guards drove a hard punch into his stomach. Air burst from his lungs as he doubled over with a painful groan, coughing violently while struggling to catch his breath. "Careful!" Cai Lang said evenly through the phone. The guard stepped back. The man slowly straightened again, breathing unevenly, but a defiant smile returned to his face. "You're wasting time!" he muttered hoarsely. "Am I?" Cai Lang replied quietly.

The prisoner laughed once, low and cold. "Yes." He leaned his head back against the wall and whispered almost gently, "Because you're already too late." Both guards stiffened, exchanging another uneasy glance. Even through the speaker, Cai Lang's voice became just slightly sharper. "For what?" The man smiled without answering immediately, enjoying the silence before speaking again. "You should ask Suo Ran."

Cai Lang asked, "Who opened the library door?" The prisoner's confident smile faltered. It was only for an instant, barely noticeable, but both guards saw it clearly. Cai Lang noticed it as well. Before anyone could say another word, the man's entire body jerked and his eyes widened. Thick white foam appeared at the corner of his mouth as his breathing became ragged. "Hey!" one guard shouted, lunging forward to grab him while the other quickly cut the ropes. It was already too late. Within seconds the man's body went limp, collapsing heavily against the seat.

One guard immediately checked for a pulse, his expression darkening. He looked toward the phone with grim eyes. "Dead." As they moved the body, a tiny broken capsule rolled from between the man's teeth and clinked softly across the van floor. The guard swallowed before speaking quietly into the phone again. "Sir… he killed himself." Several long seconds passed before Cai Lang's calm voice returned, steady and almost emotionless. "I expected that." The call ended.

Across the street from the school gate, Cai Lang slipped his phone back into his coat pocket without the slightest change in expression. Suo ran was still scanning every passing car and every unfamiliar face, tension visible in the tightness of his jaw. "They vanished!" he said quietly, frustration creeping into his tired voice. Cai Lang gave a small nod. "Yes." Lian Ziho watched him from the side, his eyes narrowing imperceptibly.

Suo Ran thoughts remained trapped by the words Jun wei had repeated all afternoon. "The library door is already open!" he whispered under his breath, his voice barely audible. His expression slowly darkened as old memories surfaced. "Father." The single word escaped him almost unconsciously.

Meanwhile, Lian Ziho kept watching Cai Lang. Then, suddenly, understanding settled over him. The man who had been watching them hadn't escaped.Someone had removed him. And Cai Lang had already known the outcome before anyone else.

The afternoon sun had begun sinking toward the horizon by the time they left the school gates. Warm light stretched across the sidewalks while students scattered in every direction, laughing loudly as they hurried toward waiting parents or chased one another down the street. Jun Wei skipped happily a few steps ahead, swinging his backpack from side to side with a bright grin. "School wasn't even that bad today!" he announced proudly.

Suo Ran walked beside him, though the tension hadn't left his face for a second. He looked down at the boy, his voice gentle but serious. "You said someone talked to you." Jun Wei nodded immediately. "Yes." "You already told Lian Gege?" Suo Ran asked. "Yes." Suo Ran slowed his steps before crouching until they were eye level. His tired eyes searched Jun Wei's innocent face. "Tell me exactly what he said." Jun Wei furrowed his little brows in concentration, determined not to forget anything.

After a few seconds he repeated carefully, "He said to tell you… the library door is already open." Suo ran became completely still. His breathing slowed as those words echoed inside his mind once again. Cai Lang observed him quietly from several steps behind while Teacher Liu walked beside Jun Wei, concern showing in his gentle expression. "Does it mean something?" Teacher Liu asked softly. Suo ran remained silent for a long moment before answering. "…Maybe." But the heaviness in his eyes made it obvious that his answer wasn't the whole truth.

They continued walking together along the busy street. Jun Wei slipped his small hand into Suo Ran's and happily swung his backpack with the other. "So… are we going home now?" he asked hopefully. Suo Ran forced a calm smile despite the weight pressing on his thoughts. "Yes." Jun Wei looked up at him with innocent confusion. "Which home?" Teacher Liu couldn't help smiling as he adjusted his glasses. "That's a fair question." Cai Lang answered calmly without slowing his pace. "The temporary one." Jun Wei sighed dramatically, puffing out his cheeks. "You adults change houses too much." Lian Ziho almost laughed as he glanced at the boy. "You'll survive." Jun Wei considered the answer very seriously before nodding. "Only if there's snacks." Teacher Liu smiled warmly while Suo Ran gently ruffled Jun Wei's hair, grateful that the child's simple complaints could still make the atmosphere feel lighter, even if only for a moment.

As they walked, Lian Ziho gradually slowed his pace, allowing the others to move several steps ahead. Cai Lang quietly matched his speed without looking at him. For a few moments neither of them spoke. Only the sound of footsteps filled the silence. Finally Lian Ziho broke it, his voice low enough that the others couldn't hear. "That man." Cai Lang kept his eyes forward. "Yes." Lian Ziho studied his expression carefully. "He didn't leave on his own." Cai Lang's face remained completely calm. "Didn't he?" Lian Ziho stopped walking altogether, his gaze steady. "You handled it."

Cai Lang turned his head slightly, one eyebrow lifting lazily. "Handled what?" Lian Ziho lowered his voice even further. "The watcher." A long silence stretched between them before Cai Lang finally answered in the same calm tone as always. "I prefer removing distractions." Lian Ziho searched his face for another moment before nodding faintly. "So you took him." Cai Lang neither confirmed nor denied it. Instead he simply said, "That problem won't appear again." Lian Ziho understood immediately what those words truly meant, and although he said nothing for a moment, one question still lingered in his mind. "What did he say?" Cai Lang's eyes drifted briefly toward Suo Ran walking ahead with Jun Wei before returning to the street. "Nothing useful." Lian Ziho frowned slightly. "You're lying." Cai Lang allowed the faintest smile to appear. "I'm simplifying."

Just then Jun Wei suddenly stopped walking and pointed excitedly across the road. "Gege." Suo Ran looked down at him. "Yes?" Jun Wei stretched out his finger toward an old brick building standing quietly on the corner. "That's a library." Suo Ran followed the direction of his finger. The old city library stood beneath fading afternoon light, its worn stone walls and silent windows giving it an almost forgotten appearance. His chest tightened unexpectedly. For one brief moment an unsettling thought crossed his mind. Could it really be connected? He stared at the building for another second before slowly shaking his head. No… it couldn't be that simple. Jun wei noticed the hesitation in his expression. "Did the villain mean that library?" he asked with wide curious eyes.

Suo Ran forced another small smile and gently squeezed the boy's shoulder. "No." Jun Wei looked genuinely disappointed. "That would've been cool." Teacher Liu smiled kindly. "Most mysteries are less exciting in real life." Jun Wei looked from one adult to another before shaking his head with complete confidence. "Not ours."

Behind them, Lian Ziho lowered his voice and looked toward Cai Lang with quiet seriousness. "You interrogated him." Cai Lang didn't slow his pace. His expression remained calm, "Yes." Lian Ziho studied his face carefully. "And?" Cai Lang answered without hesitation. "He didn't talk." Lian Ziho's brows drew together slightly as unease settled over him. "What happened?" Cai Lang glanced ahead briefly before replying in the same steady tone. "He killed himself."

Lian Ziho stopped for half a step, genuine surprise flashing across his face before it disappeared behind calm restraint. "Poison?" Cai Lang gave a small nod. "Yes." The answer settled heavily between them. Lian Ziho slowly exhaled through his nose, his eyes growing colder as the realization sank in. "So the people behind this are serious." Cai Lang's gaze remained fixed ahead. "Very." After a brief silence he added quietly, "He did confirm one thing." Lian Ziho immediately looked at him. "What?"

Cai Lang's eyes shifted toward Suo Ran walking several steps ahead beside Jun Wei. "The message about the library wasn't random." Lian Ziho felt a chill spread through him. His voice dropped almost to a whisper. "They want Suo Ran to go somewhere." Cai Lang nodded once. "Yes." Lian Ziho frowned deeply. "And the boy was the messenger." "Yes." Lian Ziho looked down for a moment before muttering bitterly, "That's twisted." Cai Lang's expression didn't change. "It's effective."

Several steps ahead, Suo Ran had fallen completely silent again, his thoughts clearly somewhere far away. Jun Wei noticed almost immediately and looked up at him with worried eyes. "Gege?" Suo Ran blinked, forcing himself back to the present. "Yes?" Jun Wei tilted his head curiously. "You look like you're solving a math problem." A faint laugh escaped Suo Ran despite everything. "Something like that." Jun Wei leaned in closer, lowering his voice as though sharing an important secret. "Is it about the library door?" Suo Ran hesitated before asking gently, "Did the man say anything else?" Jun Wei pressed his lips together and thought very carefully, determined not to forget anything.

After several seconds he slowly shook his head. "…No." Then his eyes brightened slightly as another memory surfaced. "But..." Everyone instinctively looked toward him. Jun Wei pointed thoughtfully at Suo Ran. "He looked like he knew you." Suo Ran stopped walking immediately. What do you mean?" Jun Wei shrugged innocently. "He smiled when he said your name." A heavy silence followed. Teacher Liu's gentle expression grew noticeably more serious. "That's not good." Suo Ran didn't answer, because deep inside he already knew it wasn't.

By the time they returned to the hotel, evening had settled completely over the city. Streetlights glowed softly outside while long shadows stretched across the quiet streets. Jun Wei let out a huge yawn and rubbed one sleepy eye. "I'm tired." Teacher Liu smiled warmly. "That happens after school." Jun Wei immediately pointed toward Lian Ziho with complete seriousness. "He didn't even go to school and he looks tired too." Lian Ziho folded his arms and sighed dramatically. "Watching you is exhausting." Jun Wei beamed proudly, clearly taking it as a compliment. "Thank you." Even Suo Ran managed the faintest smile.

Later that night, the hotel room became quiet. Jun Wei had fallen asleep almost as soon as his head touched the pillow. His small backpack rested beside the bed while his slow, peaceful breathing filled the room. Suo Ran sat alone near the window, turning the strange black card slowly between his fingers. The same card. The same key. The one that unlocked the sealed scroll.

Across the room, Cai Lang leaned silently against the wall, watching him for several long moments before speaking. "You're thinking about the library." Suo Ran didn't look away from the window. "Yes." Cai Lang folded his arms loosely. "Do you know where it is?" Suo Ran nodded very slowly. "…I might." Cai Lang watched him carefully. "And?" Suo Ran stared out across the sleeping city, old memories surfacing one after another. His voice was barely above a whisper. "My father used to work near one." Cai Lang remained silent, because he understood exactly what those words meant. Their enemy wasn't simply chasing them anymore. They were guiding Suo Ran back toward memories he had buried years ago. They wanted him to remember. They wanted him to return. They wanted him to open something that had remained hidden for far too long.

Far across the city, inside an old abandoned library, a single desk lamp suddenly flickered to life. Dust floated lazily through the pale light as an ancient computer screen slowly awakened from darkness. One sentence appeared across the monitor in cold white letters. *He remembered.* A second line appeared beneath it only seconds later.

*Prepare the next step.*

Outside the hotel, Suo ran stood quietly beneath the cool night sky, his sharp eyes scanning the empty streets. Every passing shadow seemed suspicious now. Every distant movement tugged at instincts he could no longer ignore. His jaw tightened as memories of his father continued surfacing piece by piece. "My father used to work near one." he murmured again. Cai Lang stepped beside him without making a sound, his eyes following the same dark streets. He allowed the silence to linger before speaking quietly. "They want it."

Suo Ran remained still. Cai Lang continued, his tone calm and measured. "They want you to return. To open something that's been waiting for years." Suo Ran's hand slowly tightened around the cold metal railing beside him until his knuckles turned white. "I can't ignore it." he admitted quietly, emotion creeping into his tired voice. "Not now. Too much was left unfinished." Cai Lang looked at him for a long moment before answering. "Then we go carefully. Not recklessly." His gaze hardened slightly. "And never alone." Suo Ran didn't reply. His eyes swept toward a distant alley where a shadow seemed to move for just a second before disappearing again. Every instinct warned him that someone was still watching. But fear alone couldn't stop him anymore. Not while Jun Wei and Lian Ziho remained in danger.

Inside the hotel room, Jun Wei slept peacefully, curled beneath the blanket with the faded amusement park balloon resting beside the bed. Lian Ziho sat quietly in the dim light, watching the sleeping child with tired but gentle eyes. "He's safe!" he whispered softly,Every creak outside the hallway made him glance toward the door. Every distant sound pulled his attention toward the window. Something still felt wrong.

Outside, Suo Ran and Cai Lang walked carefully through the nearly empty streets. The city felt different at night. Larger. Colder. Every alley looked capable of hiding someone. Suo Ran suddenly slowed. "I want to check near the carousel." he said quietly, determination clear in his voice. "Someone's been there before. I can feel it." Cai Lang stepped slightly in front of him, blocking his path without aggression. "You don't go alone." Suo Ran frowned. "I'm not rushing." His voice rose slightly with frustration. "I'm making sure nothing happens to him." Cai Lang didn't react to the emotion. "You're letting your emotions decide your next move." He held Suo Ran's gaze steadily. "Think strategically. We're protecting everyone, not just one person." Suo Ran remained silent for several seconds before finally exhaling. "Fine." He gave a small nod. "Together."

The amusement park looked completely different beneath the night sky. Silent rides creaked gently in the breeze while colorful decorations seemed strangely lifeless beneath the pale security lights. Cai Lang crouched behind a low railing, studying the narrow passage between two closed game stalls. Suo Ran quietly joined him, every muscle tense. Cai Lang lifted one hand slightly. "That's him," he whispered. Suo Ran's fingers instinctively brushed the weapon hidden beneath his jacket. "Now?" Cai Lang shook his head almost imperceptibly. "Not yet." His eyes never left the shadow ahead. "We need to know who he's working for." Suo Ran's breathing slowed as he forced himself to remain still. Farther down the alley, a shadow slipped silently between the buildings, completely unaware that it was being watched.

Back at the hotel, Jun Wei shifted slightly beneath the blanket but didn't wake. Lian Ziho gently brushed a loose strand of hair away from the boy's forehead before whispering, "Sleep a little longer." Even here, surrounded by silence, the uneasiness refused to leave him. He knew their fragile peace wouldn't last until morning.

At the amusement park, Suo ran suddenly stiffened. His eyes locked onto a figure slipping behind a rusted lamp post. His pulse quickened instantly. "That movement," he whispered. "I've seen it before." Cai Lang placed one firm hand on his shoulder, grounding him before he could react impulsively. "Patience." His voice remained steady. "See the whole picture first." Suo Ran gave a reluctant nod, though every instinct urged him to move. A sudden scraping sound echoed across the pavement. Metal against concrete. Both men froze instantly. The distant figure paused, glanced cautiously along the street, then continued moving. Cai Lang's phone vibrated softly inside his pocket. He checked it for only a second before locking the screen again. His expression grew slightly colder. "This is too precise." he murmured. "Someone is orchestrating everything." Suo ran slowly clenched both fists. "Then we make sure they don't get what they want."

Elsewhere, inside the library, the desk lamp flickered once more. The computer screen refreshed by itself.*He remembers more than expected.*A second sentence appeared beneath it. *Proceed to step two.*

Far beyond the quiet city streets, hidden beneath layers of darkness, another silent figure watched from a distance...waiting patiently for the next move.
