Chapter 56 - Unspoken Shift

Night had settled fully over the city. The lights outside the hotel window glowed softly, reflecting across the glass like distant stars. The streets were quieter now, the busy noise of daytime replaced with the occasional passing car and distant voices.

Inside the room, Jun Wei had already fallen asleep. He lay sprawled across the bed with one arm hanging off the side, breathing softly, completely unaware of the complicated world moving around him.

Lian Ziho stood near the window, watching the city below.

For once, nothing looked suspicious.

No parked vans.No figures lingering too long on the street. No camera flashes from dark corners.

Just an ordinary night.

Behind him, Suo Ran sat on the edge of the couch, slowly turning a cup of warm tea in his hands. "You've been staring outside for twenty minutes," Suo Ran said quietly.

Lian Ziho didn't turn around. "Habit."

Suo Ran let out a small breath.

"Still expecting shadows?"

"Always."

That answer came too quickly.

Suo Ran studied him for a moment before setting the cup down.."You know… they disappeared."

"For now," Lian Ziho replied calmly.

Finally he stepped away from the window.

The room was dim except for the warm bedside lamp near Jun Wei's bed. The soft light made everything feel calmer than it really was.

Suo Ran leaned back slightly on the couch.

"You don't relax very well."

Lian Ziho glanced at him. "And you do?"

Suo Ran shrugged. "I'm trying."

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Jun Wei shifted in his sleep and murmured something quietly. Both of them looked toward the bed immediately.

Old instincts. Protect first....Then think.

After a moment Jun Wei settled again.

Suo Ran relaxed slightly. "He trusts you a lot."

Lian Ziho folded his arms loosely. "He trusts you too."

"Not the same way."

Lian Ziho didn't respond to that.

Suo Ran leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees.

"When he calls you 'Lian Gege'… it sounds different."

Lian Ziho raised an eyebrow."Different how?"

"Like he thinks you'll fix everything."

Silence stretched again. Finally Lian Ziho said quietly, "He deserves someone who can."

Suo Ran watched him carefully. "You carry too much responsibility."

"And you don't?"

Suo Ran smiled faintly. "Not as quietly as you do."

A small pause passed. Then Suo Ran spoke again, softer this time. "Earlier… at the café."

Lian Ziho looked at him.

"You mean when you covered your face in pastry crumbs?"

Suo Ran groaned. "Please don't remind me."

Lian Ziho's lips twitched slightly.

"You did it twice."

"That was an accident."

"Both times?"

Suo Ran picked up a pillow from the couch and tossed it lightly at him.

Lian Ziho caught it easily.

The quiet laughter that followed felt strange.

Almost unfamiliar. But comfortable.

After a moment Suo Ran stood and walked over to the window beside him.

The two of them stood there silently, looking out over the city lights.

"You know…" Suo Ran said slowly.

"This reminds me of before."

"Before what?"

"Before everything got complicated."

Lian Ziho glanced sideways at him.

"You say that a lot."

"Because it was simpler."

"Life rarely stays simple."

Suo Ran nodded slowly.

"Still… walking with you today felt familiar."

Lian Ziho didn't respond immediately.

The silence between them wasn't awkward though. Just thoughtful.

Finally he said quietly,

"We're still walking."

Suo Ran looked at him. "Yeah."

Another small pause passed.

Then Suo Ran noticed something. "You're smiling."

Lian Ziho immediately looked away. "I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm not."

Suo Ran laughed softly. "You definitely are."

Lian Ziho shook his head and walked back toward the chair near Jun Wei's bed.

"Get some sleep."

"You sound like a parent."

"Someone has to."

Suo Ran stretched slightly before sitting back down on the couch. "You're not sleeping?"

"I will."

"When?"

"When I'm sure everything is quiet."

Suo Ran watched him for a moment.

Then he grabbed the extra blanket from the couch and tossed it toward him.

Lian Ziho caught it mid-air. "What's this for?"

"You can't guard the window all night."

"I've done it before."

"And you looked terrible the next day."

Lian Ziho raised an eyebrow. "You noticed?"

Suo Ran shrugged casually.

"Someone has to."

For a moment they just looked at each other again. Then Lian Ziho sat down beside Jun Wei's bed and leaned back slightly in the chair.

"Fine."

Suo Ran smiled faintly. "Progress."

The room grew quiet again.

Outside, the city lights shimmered peacefully.

No shadows moved.

No watchers appeared.

For the first time in days…

It truly felt like nothing was chasing them.

And slowly, one by one, the tension that had followed them for so long began to loosen.

But neither Suo Ran nor Lian Ziho knew that somewhere else in the city…

someone had already started preparing the next move.

The city was quieter now. Most lights in the surrounding buildings had gone dark, leaving only scattered windows glowing against the night sky.

Cai Lang walked slowly down the nearly empty street. His hands were in his pockets, his steps steady but his mind wasn't calm.

The image kept replaying.

The café window.

Suo Ran sitting across from Lian Ziho.

Lian Ziho leaning forward.

His hand on Suo Ran's face.

From Cai Lang's angle…

It had looked like a kiss.

Cai Lang exhaled slowly.

It was probably nothing, he told himself.

But the thought refused to leave.

He had turned away before confirming what he saw. He hadn't stayed long enough to hear their conversation or understand what really happened.

Still…Something about it had bothered him.

More than it should have.

Cai Lang stopped at a street corner and looked up at the hotel building across the road.

Their floor lights were still on.

So they're awake.

For a moment he considered turning around.

Then he shook the thought away and crossed the street.

Inside the Hotel Upstairs, the room was quiet.

Jun Wei slept peacefully, curled under the blanket like a small bundle of warmth.

Lian Ziho sat in the chair beside the bed, half-awake but still alert.

Suo Ran lay stretched across the couch, one arm draped over his eyes.

Neither of them were truly asleep.

They were Just resting.

Then the faint sound of footsteps approached in the hallway outside.

Suo Ran's eyes snapped open immediately.

He sat up. "Did you hear that?"

Lian Ziho was already standing.

"Yes." Another step this time Closer.

Suo Ran's heart started beating faster.

"The shadows.."

"Stay here," Lian Ziho said quietly.

He moved toward the door silently.

Suo Ran followed anyway.

The door handle turned slowly.

Suo Ran's pulse spiked.

For a split second, the tension from the past days rushed back into the room like cold air.

The door opened.

And Cai Lang stepped inside.

Suo Ran froze.

"…Cai Lang?"

Cai Lang looked at both of them calmly.

"You look like you saw a ghost."

Suo Ran let out a long breath.

"I thought the shadows came back."

"They didn't."

Cai Lang closed the door quietly behind him.

Jun Wei stirred slightly on the bed but didn't wake. For a moment the room fell silent again.

Then Suo Ran frowned.

"You're late."

Cai Lang shrugged slightly.

"Went for a walk."

"That long?"

"Needed fresh air."

Suo Ran studied him carefully.

Something felt… different.

Cai Lang moved past him toward the table, placing his phone down casually.

Suo Ran crossed his arms.

"You usually tell us if you're leaving."

"I wasn't gone that long."

"You were."

Cai Lang didn't respond.

He just poured himself a glass of water.

Suo Ran tilted his head slightly.

"…Did something happen?"

"No."

"Then why are you acting strange?"

Cai Lang paused briefly.

Just for a moment. His mind flickered back to the café window.

His mind replayed the moment he saw Lian Ziho kiss Suo Ran.

The question rose to his lips almost automatically.

Did something happen between you two?

But he didn't say it.

Instead, he took a drink of water.

"Nothing happened."

Suo Ran frowned slightly.

"You're a terrible liar."

Cai Lang ignored that.

Across the room, Lian Ziho watched quietly.

He didn't speak but his eyes moved between them carefully.

Cai Lang set the glass down and leaned against the counter.

Suo Ran stepped closer.

"Seriously. What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

"That's not convincing."

"Good thing I'm not trying to convince you."

Suo Ran blinked.

"…What?"

Cai Lang simply looked away.

The silence that followed felt awkward.

Finally Suo Ran rubbed the back of his neck.

"Okay… you're definitely acting weird."

Cai Lang walked past him toward the spare chair.

"I'm tired."

"That's it?"

"Yes."

Suo Ran stared at him.

"You disappear for hours and come back acting like this and that's your explanation?"

Cai Lang sat down calmly.

"Yes."

Suo Ran opened his mouth to argue again

then paused. Something about Cai Lang's expression stopped him.

He wasn't angry just quiet.

He was more distant than usual.

Suo Ran slowly stepped back.

"…Fine."

He returned to the couch and sat down again..The room settled into silence once more. Jun Wei shifted slightly in his sleep.

Lian Ziho finally spoke.

"You should sleep."

Cai Lang nodded once.

"Planning to."

But before closing his eyes, Cai Lang glanced briefly toward Suo Ran.

Just for a moment the café image flickered through his mind again.

Lian Ziho leaning close.

Suo Ran's face inches away.

That almost-kiss.

Cai Lang looked away again.

He decided not to ask.

Some questions, he told himself, weren't necessary.

But the strange feeling in his chest remained.

And across the room…

Suo Ran couldn't shake the feeling that Cai Lang was hiding something.

The hotel room was still. Outside the window, the city lights flickered quietly, but inside the room only the soft breathing of Jun Wei broke the silence.

He had turned sideways in his sleep, clutching the edge of the blanket like it was the most important thing in the world.

Suo Ran had eventually fallen asleep on the couch.

One arm was hanging loosely over the side, his breathing slow and even. The long day had clearly exhausted him.

Near the window, Lian Ziho stood quietly with his arms folded, watching the dark street below out of habit.

Across the room, Cai Lang sat in a chair with his head tilted back slightly, though his eyes were open.

Neither of them had spoken for several minutes. Finally, Cai Lang broke the silence.

"Lian Ziho."

Lian Ziho didn't turn around.

"Yes?"

Cai Lang studied the quiet room for a moment before asking something unexpected.

"What are your thoughts about love?"

That question hung in the air longer than either of them expected.

Lian Ziho finally turned his head slightly.

"Love?"

"Yes.".Cai Lang's voice was calm, casual even. But his eyes briefly moved toward the couch where Suo Ran was sleeping.

He Just gave a quick glance then he looked forward again like nothing had happened.

Lian Ziho noticed the glance nut he didn't comment on it.

Instead he leaned lightly against the window frame. "That's a strange question for midnight."

Cai Lang shrugged faintly. "Answer it anyway."

Lian Ziho thought for a moment.

The quiet room made the pause feel deeper.

Finally he spoke.

"Love isn't simple."

"That's not an answer."

"It is."

Cai Lang waited.

Lian Ziho continued slowly.

"Most people think love is something soft. Something comfortable."

"And you don't?"

"I think love is responsibility."

Cai Lang raised an eyebrow.

"Responsibility."

Lian Ziho nodded once.

"If you love someone, you protect them."

He glanced briefly toward the bed where Jun Wei slept.

"Even when it's difficult."

Cai Lang followed that glance.

Then looked toward Suo Ran on the couch.

Suo Ran shifted slightly in his sleep but didn't wake.

Cai Lang spoke quietly.

"So love is protection."

"Yes."

Lian Ziho's voice was calm.

"It means you take responsibility for someone's safety. Their future. Their happiness."

Cai Lang leaned back slightly in his chair.

"That sounds heavy."

"It is."

Another small pause filled the room.

Then Lian Ziho looked back at him.

"What about you?"

Cai Lang raised an eyebrow.

"What about me?"

"You asked the question."

"So?"

"So what do you think love is?"

Cai Lang looked away toward the ceiling.

For once, he didn't answer immediately.

The silence stretched long enough that Lian Ziho realized he wasn't going to get a simple response.

Finally Cai Lang exhaled quietly.

"I think it's dangerous."

Lian Ziho tilted his head slightly.

"Dangerous."

"Yes."

Cai Lang glanced briefly toward Suo Ran again. But this time he didn't linger.

"People make mistakes when they care too much."

Lian Ziho didn't argue.

He understood that logic.

Cai Lang continued quietly.

"They stop thinking clearly."

"So you avoid it."

"Something like that."

Another moment passed.

Then Lian Ziho spoke calmly.

"You didn't answer the question."

Cai Lang smirked faintly.

"I did."

"No."

Lian Ziho folded his arms again.

"You avoided it."

Cai Lang stood up slowly.

"That's because I'm tired."

"That's not the same thing."

Cai Lang stretched slightly, rolling his shoulders.

"You're overthinking."

"Am I?"

"Yes."

Cai Lang walked toward the spare bed.

Lian Ziho watched him quietly.

Before lying down, Cai Lang paused.

He glanced once more toward the couch where Suo Ran slept.

Then he looked back at Lian Ziho.

"For what it's worth," he said calmly, "your answer makes sense."

"Which part?"

"The protection part."

Then he pulled the blanket over himself.

"Goodnight."

Lian Ziho watched him for another moment.

"You changed the subject."

Cai Lang closed his eyes.

"Exactly."

Within minutes, his breathing slowed.

This time he actually did fall asleep.

Lian Ziho remained near the window a little longer..The quiet room felt heavier after that conversation.

The quiet room felt heavier after that conversation. His gaze drifted briefly toward Cai Lang, then away again.

That was strange. (....)

Cai Lang wasn't someone who asked unnecessary questions. He spoke when needed, acted when required nothing more.(...)

So why now?(...)

Why "love"?(....)

Lian Ziho's eyes narrowed slightly.

And more than the question…(....)

It was the way Cai Lang had asked was calm.

As if he was testing something. (...)

His fingers rested lightly against the window frame.

And that look…(...)

And the he had glanced at Suo Ran.

He was not openly glancing but it was obvious.

Lian Ziho exhaled quietly.

What are you trying to figure out?(.....)

That was the part that unsettled him.

Not the question itself but the reason behind it.

Because Cai Lang didn't act without purpose.

And tonight… he had.

Lian Ziho glanced at him again.

Now he was asleep Or at least pretending to be earlier.

"…You're hiding something," Lian Ziho murmured under his breath.

But he didn't push it further tonight.

After a moment, he stepped away from the window..

Eventually he glanced toward the couch.

Suo Ran was still sleeping peacefully, unaware of the strange midnight discussion that had just happened beside him.

Lian Ziho sighed softly.

Then he turned off the lamp.

Darkness filled the room.

Then Suo Ran's eyes opened slowly.

He watched Carefully in room.

He didn't move and didn't shift.

Only his thoughts moved.

…Love? (.....)

The word echoed quietly in his mind.

He had woken up earlier not fully just enough to hear voices.

And then he stayed still.

He was listening every word.

"If you love someone, you protect them."

Suo Ran's fingers tightened slightly against the couch. His chest felt tight for no clear reason.

Then ..."People make mistakes when they care too much."

He heared Cai Lang's voice.

Gus voice was Calm but distant.

Like he was holding something back.

Suo Ran stared into the darkness.

Why were they talking about that? (....)

It didn't feel random.

Not at all.

And somehow…(....)

Without anyone saying it directly It felt close to him.

His thoughts drifted, trying to piece things together. Cai Lang acting strange.

That question out of nowhere.

Avoiding answers.

Looking at him like he was trying to understand something.

Suo Ran swallowed faintly.

Did I do something? (....)

The thought came suddenly.

He shifted slightly on the couch, turning his face toward the faint outline of the room.

Lian Ziho was near the bed.

Suo Ran's gaze lingered there for a moment.

Protect…(....)

That word stayed with him.

He didn't fully understand why it affected him so much but it did. After a long pause, he closed his eyes again.

Forcing himself to relax.

I'm overthinking. He told himself that again.

and again Until his breathing slowly evened out.

The room returned to silence.

But beneath that quiet…

Questions had already taken root.

And none of them had answers yet.

Morning light slipped quietly through the curtains, soft and warm, brushing against the walls of the hotel room.

For once, everything felt calm.

Jun Wei was the first to wake up.

He blinked sleepily, then sat up, rubbing his eyes. The room was quiet too quiet for his liking.

His gaze landed on the couch Suo Ran was still asleep.

Jun Wei tilted his head, then climbed off the bed and padded over, small footsteps barely making a sound. He stood beside the couch, staring at Suo Ran's face for a moment.

Then he poked his cheek.

No response.

Jun Wei frowned slightly. He leaned closer.

"Gege…"

Still no response.

He poked him again. Harder this time.

Suo Ran's brow twitched.

Jun Wei brightened and immediately tried again. "Gege, wake up. It's morning."

A groan escaped from Suo Ran as he turned slightly, pulling the blanket over his head.

"Go back to sleep…"

Jun Wei puffed his cheeks.

"But it's already morning."

"That's not a good reason."

Jun Wei stared at him, completely unconvinced. After a second, he climbed onto the couch and sat directly beside him.

"Gege."

"…What."

"You're lazy."

Suo Ran slowly pulled the blanket down just enough to look at him.

"You woke me up just to insult me?"

Jun Wei nodded seriously.

"Yes."

Suo Ran closed his eyes again.

"I regret everything."

Jun Wei grinned.

A little later, the room had come to life.

Jun Wei stood in front of Suo Ran, arms stretched out as he tried to button his shirt.

"You're doing it wrong," Jun Wei complained.

"I'm not."

"You skipped one."

Suo Ran looked down. "…That's intentional."

"It looks weird."

"It's fashion."

Jun Wei squinted at him. "You're lying."

Suo Ran sighed and fixed it properly.

"Stand still."

"I am standing still."

"You're moving."

"I'm breathing!"

Suo Ran paused, then shook his head slightly, a faint smile slipping through despite himself. After fixing the buttons, he reached up and tried to smooth Jun Wei's hair.

Instead, he accidentally made it worse.

Jun Wei immediately frowned.

"…What did you do?"

"Improved it."

"It was better before."

"That's debatable."

Jun Wei crossed his arms. "I want Lian Gege."

Suo Ran clicked his tongue. "Too late."

From across the room, Lian Ziho watched quietly. He had been awake for a while.

Leaning near the window, arms folded, observing the scene without interrupting.

There was something… peaceful about it.

After a moment, he stepped forward.

"He needs to go school "

"Yes, I know I'll take him after clearing this messed up"

" it's okay, I'll take Jun Wei to school."

Both of them looked at him. Suo Ran blinked.

"You don't have to.."

"I know."

His tone was calm, but firm. Jun Wei immediately brightened.

"Yes! Lian Gege takes less time."

Suo Ran narrowed his eyes.

"What does that mean?"

"You walk too slow."

"I do not walk slow."

"You think too much while walking."

"…That doesn't even make sense."

Jun Wei grabbed his bag happily.

"I'm ready!"

Lian Ziho adjusted the strap on Jun Wei's shoulder. "Shoes."

Jun Wei froze. "…Oh."

Suo Ran snorted quietly.

At the door, Jun Wei turned back and waved dramatically.

"Bye!"

Suo Ran lifted a hand lazily.

"Don't cause trouble."

"I never cause trouble!"

"Yesterday .."

"That doesn't count!"

Lian Ziho opened the door.

"Let's go."

Jun Wei rushed out. Lian Ziho followed, but before stepping out completely, he paused.

His eyes met Suo Ran's briefly.

Then He left.

The door closed.

The Silence in room returned.

The room felt bigger now.

Suo Ran stretched slightly, rolling his shoulders before starting to tidy up.

he started Folding blankets and Adjusting the pillows.

He Pick up the scattered things Jun Wei had left behind. It was simple work.

Comforting, in a way.

Some time later Cai Lang woke up.

His eyes opened, adjusting to the light.

For a moment, he didn't move.

Then his gaze shifted and the first thing he saw was Suo Ran standing near the table.

He saw him tidying things quietly.

Sui ran was focused and Unaware.

Cai Lang's expression didn't change but his mind did.

The image returned.

That moment replayed in mind again.

Cai Lang's fingers curled slightly against the sheet.

…It didn't look like nothing.

He sat up slowly. Suo Ran didn't notice at first. He was too focused on fixing the blanket.

Then he said "Awake?"

Suo Ran glanced over casually.

"You finally decided to join the living?"

No response. Suo Ran frowned slightly.

"…You're really quiet today."

Still nothing.

Cai Lang stood up.

Suo Ran turned back to what he was doing.

"If you're hungry, there's..."

Before he could finish a hand caught his wrist.Cai Lang hold suo ran hand it was unexpected.Suo Ran froze.

In the next second He was pulled back sharply. His back hit the wall.

His breath caught. Cai Lang stood in front of him Close. He was too close.

The grip on his wrist hadn't loosened.

Suo Ran stared at him, completely caught off guard.

"Cai Lang...what are you doing ?"
