Cai Lang stood there, exactly as expected calm, composed, bag slung over one shoulder like nothing had happened behind him stood someone else.
For a brief moment, no one spoke.
Suo Ran's gaze shifted from Cai Lang to the figure behind him, then back again, his expression flattening just slightly. "…Took you long enough," he said, voice dry. A beat passed before he added, "…And you brought someone."
For a moment, his thoughts stalled. Why suddenly bring someone here? That wasn't like him not without a reason. And why here of all places? His eyes flicked toward the stranger again, sharper this time. Who are you supposed to be… and what exactly is he doing? The questions stacked quickly, irritation following close behind. He leaves without a word, then comes back like this?
Cai Lang didn't react to the tone. His gaze flicked over Suo Ran briefly, steady and unreadable. "Move."
Suo Ran didn't. Not immediately. He leaned slightly against the doorframe instead, just enough to block the entrance without making it obvious. His brow lifted faintly. "You planning to explain first," he asked, "or is that still not part of your routine?"
Behind Cai Lang, the other person remained silent, but Suo Ran could feel it that quiet attention, like he was being observed just as closely in return. It only made the irritation sharper before the tension could stretch any further, a small voice broke in from behind.
"Is he the bad guy… or your friend?"
The question was soft, but in the silence, it landed perfectly.
Suo Ran almost laughed. He didn't but it was close.
"Jun Wei…" Lian Ziho's voice followed immediately, low and warning.
Suo Ran muttered under his breath, just loud enough, "…Good question."
Jun Wei blinked up at him, unconcerned. "But… if he's not the bad guy, why does he look so scary? His face is all serious!"
Lian Ziho pinched the bridge of his nose, sighing. "Jun Wei, don't just stare and comment."
"But I'm asking questions! Questions are important!" Jun Wei protested, little arms crossed. "And… and why is he standing there in my home like he owns it?"
Suo Ran snorted quietly. "Maybe because he does, in a way." His tone was flat, but Jun Wei tilted his head, intrigued.
"Does he eat ice cream? Does he like puppies or kittens?" Jun Wei's rapid-fire questions tumbled out one after another.
"Jun Wei…" Lian Ziho warned again, more firmly this time, though a smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "Stop interrogating people you don't know."
Suo Ran leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, smirking faintly. "I'd say you're terrifying him already."
Jun Wei ignored him. "Is he going to be my friend? Or a bad guy friend? Can bad guys be friends sometimes? What about super bad guys?"
Lian Ziho groaned, exhaling loudly. "I don't think this is the time "
Jun Wei frowned in thought. "Hmm… but what if he eats too much? Then he might be evil again, right?"
Suo Ran laughed softly, shaking his head. "Careful, kid. You're already judging him based on dessert."
Cai Lang didn't comment. He simply stepped forward again, not forceful, but certain.
This time, Suo Ran moved.
"Yeah, yeah," he muttered, stepping aside with a faint click of his tongue. "Come in. Wouldn't want to block whatever this is."
Cai Lang walked past him without hesitation, as if the brief standoff had never happened. The other person followed quietly, their presence subtle but impossible to ignore.
The atmosphere shifted the moment the door closed.
It wasn't loud or obvious. Just… heavier.
Jun Wei had already moved closer to Lian Ziho, peeking from behind him with wide, curious eyes. He tugged lightly at Suo Ran's sleeve as he passed. "He looks scary…" he whispered, then added after a second, "…but a little cool."
Suo Ran glanced down at him, unimpressed. "…You need better judgment."
Jun Wei frowned slightly. "I have good judgment."
"Mm," Suo Ran hummed. "That's what I'm worried about."
Across the room, Cai Lang had already set his bag down. No explanations. No introductions. Just silence, as if everything happening was perfectly normal.
Suo Ran watched him for a few seconds before speaking again. "You going to explain now?"
Cai Lang didn't even look at him. "Later."
There it was.
Suo Ran let out a short, humorless breath, folding his arms. "Of course," he said. "Why would you ever explain things on time?"
The irritation sat just under his tone not loud, not explosive, but very much there.
Lian Ziho stepped in before it could go further. "At least tell us one thing," he said calmly. "Are we safe here?"
That made Cai Lang pause, just slightly.
"For now," he replied.
The answer didn't help. If anything, it made the room quieter.
Jun Wei, apparently unaffected by tension, took a few small steps forward instead, stopping just a short distance from the unfamiliar person. He tilted his head, studying them with open curiosity.
"…Are you really a villain?" he asked again, eyes wide. "Or… are you pretending?"
The stranger didn't answer immediately, their gaze calm, almost amused.
Jun Wei blinked. "You don't have to lie. I can tell."
The stranger raised an eyebrow slightly. "And how would a little person like you know?"
Jun Wei put his hands on his hips, puffing his chest out. "I just do! I know things!"
The stranger let a faint chuckle escape. "Hmm… alright. If you say so. But tell me what makes someone a villain?"
Jun Wei thought for a moment, tapping a finger against his chin. "Villains are mean, take things, and… and don't share chocolate!"
The stranger's lips twitched, the closest thing to a smile. "Ah… then I must be a hero. I like chocolate."
Jun Wei's face lit up immediately. "See! I knew it! Heroes like chocolate! That means you're good!"
Jun Wei bounced slightly on the balls of his feet, clearly satisfied with his verdict. "So… if you're a hero, do you have superpowers?"
The stranger tilted their head, considering. "Depends on what you mean by superpowers."
Jun Wei grinned. "Flying, super strength, invisibility… that kind of stuff!"
The stranger chuckled softly again, a sound light and calm. "I see. Well… I don't fly, and I'm not invisible. But I do know a few tricks."
Jun Wei's eyes widened with excitement. "Tricks! Like magic?"
"Something like that," the stranger replied, keeping their tone playful but measured.
Jun Wei leaned forward slightly, whispering as if sharing a secret. "If you're a hero, can I be your sidekick?"
The stranger's lips curved faintly, though they didn't say anything immediately. Jun Wei's face lit up at the silence. "You're saying yes!"
"Maybe," the stranger finally said, voice quiet. "But only if you promise to behave."
Jun Wei gasped dramatically. "I always behave! Most of the time!"
Suo Ran pressed his lips together, looking away for a second. "…There it is," he muttered.
"Jun Wei," Cai Lang said, low and warning.
Jun Wei blinked, then shuffled back a step, though his curiosity didn't disappear.
And then just like that Cai Lang ended it.
No explanation. No discussion.
"You'll stay here," he said simply, turning toward the hallway.
It wasn't directed at them.
It was for the person he had brought.
Suo Ran's eyes narrowed, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly. "…Of course," he muttered under his breath, his tone dry but sharp. "No explanations. Just orders, as always."
He ran a hand through his hair, tugging lightly at the strands as if the action alone could help him process what had just happened. Why does he always do this? The thought pressed at the back of his mind. Brings someone here, doesn't say a word, and expects us to just… accept it?
He stepped closer to the doorway, glancing at the guest room where the two had disappeared, his brows knitting together further. And who even is that person? Friend? Stranger? Ally? Enemy? The questions swirled in his mind, unresolved and irritatingly persistent.
Suo Ran pressed his lips together, feeling the familiar tug of irritation tighten in his chest. It's not like I'm supposed to care… right? But the pause in his own thought betrayed him of course he cared. Otherwise, he wouldn't be standing here, staring at the closed door, waiting.
"Unbelievable," he muttered again, louder this time, letting the word carry some of the frustration he couldn't voice. He ran another hand through his hair, then exhaled slowly, forcing himself to step back, though his gaze lingered. Typical Cai Lang. Quiet,
commanding, infuriating… and somehow, he still makes me want to know.
Suo Ran straightened, crossing his arms loosely over his chest, a faint edge of dry humor creeping into his voice. "Great. Just great. So now we're officially in the middle of whatever secret project he's cooking, and we're supposed to stand here like good little pawns. Fantastic."
A beat passed. His eyes flicked back toward the hallway, then to Lian Ziho, who was standing nearby with Jun Wei at his side, both watching him quietly.
Suo Ran stared at the closed door for a second longer than necessary. "…That's it?" he said finally.
He let out a quiet scoff, running a hand through his hair. He brings someone into the house… and just leaves them there?
No explanation. Again.
"Come on," Lian Ziho said quietly.
Suo Ran glanced at him, then followed without arguing this time. They stepped a little further away, toward the edge of the room where their voices wouldn't carry as easily.
Lian Ziho leaned slightly against the wall, arms crossed, a faint edge of humor in his expression. "Which probably means it's serious," he said carefully, his voice measured. "Cai Lang doesn't just bring people here for fun."
"Serious?" Suo Ran scoffed, running a hand through his hair. "Or… he just enjoys being impossible. Big fan of making us guess, clearly."
Lian Ziho let out a quiet breath, almost a laugh, shaking his head slightly. "That too," he admitted. Then his expression shifted a little more serious. "Look, it's not our home. We don't get to decide what happens here. We follow his rules. That's the safest way right now."
Suo Ran frowned, his irritation sharpening. "Follow his rules, huh?" he muttered, voice low. "I'm starting to think his favorite sport is making people frustrated." His lips twitched, half in humor, half in exasperation. "Does he get a medal for that or something?"
Lian Ziho smirked faintly, tilting his head. "Maybe. But for now… we're just here temporarily. Don't worry about it too much. As long as we're safe, that's what matters."
Suo Ran's gaze drifted back toward the hallway, toward that closed guest room door again. His jaw tightened faintly. "Safe," he repeated under his breath, voice softer this time. "Right. Because everything else clearly makes perfect sense…" His fingers flexed slightly at his sides, curling unconsciously. Yeah, sure. Safe. That's the part I'm supposed to focus on while everything else is a mystery.
He leaned against the wall briefly, letting out a long breath. "Temporary. Safe. Rules. Got it." The words sounded more like a mantra than a statement. He shot a sideways glance at Lian Ziho. "You sound way too calm about this. It's weird."
Lian Ziho shrugged, still relaxed. "I've learned over time, Suo Ran. You can't fight the tide when someone else is steering the ship. Best you can do is stay alert, keep your head down, and don't overthink."
Suo Ran snorted quietly. "Alert, head down, don't overthink…" he repeated, shaking his head. "Yeah, that's going to help when someone mysterious is standing in my guest room and I don't even know their name. Brilliant plan."
Lian Ziho's lips curved slightly into a half-smile. "It's temporary. That's all that matters. Eventually, we'll know. Until then…" He glanced toward the closed door, voice dropping slightly. "…let's just keep calm and not make a scene."
Suo Ran pressed his lips together, muttering under his breath. "…Calm. Sure. Perfect advice when curiosity is practically eating me alive." His fingers drummed lightly against the wall, restless. "I don't even like not knowing who's inside. Not one bit."
Lian Ziho's tone softened. "I get it. I do. But stress won't change anything. Just… wait. He'll give us information when it matters. For now, focus on what we can control."
Suo Ran looked away, his gaze drifting briefly toward the hallway toward that closed guest room door.
Why does it bother me this much?
The thought came uninvited.
It's not like I expect him to explain
Suo Ran looked away, his gaze drifting briefly toward the hallway toward that closed guest room door.
Why does it bother me this much?
The thought came uninvited.
It's not like I expect him to explain things.
A pause.
…Right?
His jaw tightened faintly before he looked away again, dismissing it just as quickly.
"…Whatever," he muttered.
But his eyes flicked back to that door one more time and this time he didn't look away immediately. In brief moment cai Lang come outside of room. Suo ran gaze lifted.
"You always do this," he said quietly, voice steady but tight, as if each word had to fight its way out. "Decide, move, disappear… and then expect everyone else to just follow along."
Cai Lang's gaze met his, calm, steady, unyielding. For a moment, the room felt smaller, the air heavier, as if even breathing required permission. "I'm not asking you to follow me," he said evenly, his voice deceptively light.
Suo Ran pressed his lips together, jaw tight. "No, apparently not asking… just telling." He leaned slightly against the wall, arms crossed. "Do you even realize what it feels like? To… not know what you're thinking? To not know what you're planning?"
Cai Lang's expression didn't change, though his eyes flicked briefly toward the hallway, toward the closed door, then back. "You know enough to stay safe. That's all that matters."
"That's all that matters?" Suo Ran repeated, voice rising slightly, disbelief coating every word. "That's your excuse for… whatever this is? You think I don't notice everything you don't say, every step you take like it's… I don't know… chess, and I'm just a pawn?"
Cai Lang tilted his head, studying him, unflinching. "Maybe. Or maybe you're just looking for a reason to argue."
Suo Ran scoffed, running a hand through his hair. "You think this is funny?"
Cai Lang finally let a faint exhale slip past his lips. "Not funny. Necessary."
"Necessary for who?" Suo Ran's voice dropped, sharper now, edged with something he didn't want to name. "You? Me? Or… whoever's in that guest room?" His eyes flicked once more toward the closed door, then back to Cai Lang, searching for a flicker of honesty.
Cai Lang didn't answer immediately. The silence stretched between them, taut and heavy. Then, slowly, he stepped closer, just enough for Suo Ran to notice the shift without feeling threatened. "Necessary for all of us," he said finally, voice quiet but firm.
Suo Ran blinked, heart betraying a small hitch. "All of us… huh?" He tried to mask the reaction with a dry laugh, but it came out hollow. "Funny way of showing it."
Cai Lang didn't smile. "You think I don't notice how you worry. How you question. How you " His gaze softened, just a fraction, enough that Suo Ran's stomach tightened. "...care, even when you pretend you don't."
Suo Ran's lips parted slightly, caught off guard. He opened his mouth to speak but closed it again. Nothing he could say would capture the frustration, the annoyance, and… that pull, all at once. So he stayed silent.
Cai Lang's eyes held his a moment longer, then shifted toward the hallway again. "I didn't bring them here to complicate things. But you… you're part of this, whether you like it or not."
Suo Ran's jaw clenched, and a small, bitter laugh escaped. "Part of this? You never explain what 'this' is. You never include me except when it suits you."
Cai Lang stepped back, almost imperceptibly, giving him space while still commanding it. "I didn't ask for understanding. I asked for trust."
Suo Ran shook his head slightly, disbelief flickering in his eyes. "Trust? You make it impossible to trust you. Every step you take… every decision… you don't just move, you drag me along in your shadow, guessing what comes next. And yet…" He paused, the words quieter now, almost reluctant. "…And yet I can't stop thinking about it. About you."
Cai Lang's gaze sharpened for a fraction of a second, unreadable as ever, before he turned slightly toward the guest room again. "Then stop thinking. Stay here. Wait. That's all you need to do."
