Elias stepped through the Asylum's massive gate, the great metal doors groaning shut behind him with a sound like a sleeping beast turning over. It was early in the morning, and so Cora and Fenwick would not be at their post; most likely, they would be resting after spending all night guarding the gate.
They had thought Elias the importance of always resting when the chance presented itself, and this was one of the few lessons he did not learn because he hardly needed rest.
As he stepped outside the gate and saw the city opening up for him, Elias could not help but gasp. For a moment, he simply stood there, breathing in the air of the city he had lived beneath for most of his life, and realizing, for the first time, that he had never truly seen it.
