….

"Oh..." I actually felt a twinge of guilt. "Well... let's just assume that I am an evil, devious god who was simply fulfilling his monthly quota for villainy."

"Well, whatever you say," the guy shrugged. "Good luck anyway."

"Thanks."

For the next three hours, I suffered from boredom. Or rather, I read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer to Laura. It's like she knew exactly when to catch me! And where did she even get the book... Oh, right. We're in a school for kids of various ages.

Anyway, I waited for exactly three hours because Storm, as befits a beautiful lady, was "running a little late." But when she finally came out to me, wearing a silver dress that complemented her hair perfectly... oh, the wait was truly worth it, every single second.

"Oh..." I couldn't take my eyes off her, which clearly didn't escape the girl's attention, causing her to modestly lower her gaze.

"How do I look?"

"As a Goddess should, divine," I didn't lie in a single syllable. And then I pressed my lips to her hand and led her out of the living room. "Tell me, do you trust me?"

"Yes," the answer followed immediately.

"Then don't be alarmed that we're heading to the basement!"

"Original," the girl noted, but she wasn't alarmed.

Reaching the hangar, I covered everything possible with illusions and, inviting the lady aboard the Sky Skiff, activated the opening of the roof doors. Then followed a smooth ascent into the night sky, a bird's-eye view of Xavier's mansion, and a swift flight toward the sea.

The Aesir creation was equipped with G-force compensators and force fields that protected against both oncoming air currents and the vacuum of space, and even a cloaking system, albeit less perfect than what my illusions provided. And it could fly only slightly slower than the best Earth fighter jets, even though it wasn't designed for high-speed combat. It's just that at Asgard's level of technology, even the secondary characteristics of an almost civilian vessel were comparable to the top military developments on Earth.

So, just a few minutes later, we hovered in the night sky over the water's surface, far from the shipping lanes leading into the Big Apple. The starlight reflected in the smooth water, making it hard to tell up from down. A light sea breeze, let through by properly adjusted shields, pleasantly ruffled our hair. The beautiful girl sitting at the edge of the Skiff looked around, impressed...

Afterward, there was a candlelit dinner, an improvised dance under the starlight on a disk of ice frozen and secured by magic, and conversations about everything and nothing until dawn. And, of course, the taste of the lips of the goddess sitting next to me and pressed against my side.

It's a pity that, like all good things, this moment too came to an end. It was time to return. Tomorrow was Monday, bringing the work routine. And only the promise that this evening would not be the last, and would have its development in the future, which I read in Ororo's eyes, reconciled me with the unsightly reality.

The following week passed in minor but quite pleasant chores. Having rested after a wonderful evening with the beautiful mutant, I plunged into the planned research.

There was so much interesting stuff to study and do that my eyes ran wide, I wanted to tackle everything at once and simultaneously.

But even though I knew how to create additional bodies for myself, it didn't give me any more brains, so I had to prioritize.

Thus, through difficult moral choices, I had to suppress my curiosity regarding the notorious X-gene. My hands itched terribly to run all the inhabitants of the mansion through the Soul Forge to finally discover the secret of the origin and nature of their abilities, but

I overcame myself. A mantra helped me a lot in this: "the children won't run away from me, and I will dismantle them into atoms later, yes, my Precious, dismantle them, no one will escape Loki, Loki will study everyone, Precious!"

From the outside, of course, I looked like quite the maniac at that moment (I saw myself through the eyes of a phantom), but I was careful and didn't let the X-Men catch me. I fear, otherwise, they would have tried to whack me, regardless of all my past merits.

I performed a second feat when I overcame my vanity and didn't rush to construct my own "Iron Man" armor.

This was a bit easier; after all, only Tony could fully appreciate the magnificence of my work, and I'd probably be shy about bragging to him... right off the bat like that. Otherwise, I might ruin his honeymoon, because the guy would jump up to "catch up and overtake." I don't care about Tony in this regard, but pulling such a dirty trick on Pepper would be highly unseemly.

I don't even really know her, of course, but a self-respecting man shouldn't ruin such a moment for a woman as marrying the one she loves.

But what I couldn't give up under any circumstances was studying the knowledge stored in the Casket of Ancient Winters and researching the magical properties of adamantium.

I could simply coat the armor with a thin layer, the coating wouldn't affect its functions in any way. But with Gungnir, I had to be more careful.

After all, it has quite a few active abilities that interact with the surrounding world, and even minimal interference could be fatal, for example, for the ability to shoot plasma.

This is where Yuriko's grim working days began, for the prodigal boss in my person, having gained the opportunity to bury himself in his toys, not thinking about any wars, brothers, and other Laufeys, completely lost touch with reality and forgot about everything in the world.

A couple of times I had to apologize to Xavier when I accidentally dropped the temperature in the room where I worked to almost absolute zero.

Realistically, it was more like minus two hundred something, but that doesn't change much, because while the X-Men's bunker was built solidly, it still wasn't designed for such sudden occurrences.

And it's not very comfortable for the kids to study when their breath suddenly starts puffing out as steam in a warm building.

And it did, despite several walls and floors. We were talking about magic, after all, not pure physics, and walls aren't always an obstacle for magic.

Fortunately, no one was hurt, I had enough brains to work with the Casket alone and in a separate room, so even Yuriko disturbed me during those moments via an Asgardian "Communication Stone", essentially a walkie-talkie, just implemented on different principles, rather than entering the room personally and risking frostbite.

But these were all minor details of life, especially since after the second incident, Storm herself took me by the arm and dragged me to the movies, to clear my head.

I really did clear my head, but I absolutely do not remember what the movie was about and don't regret it in the slightest.

And because the back rows are great, and Storm blushes very cutely when she can't run away or raise her voice to call me to order. It's a pure pleasure to braid her hair at such a moment.

But oh, how much temperament and vengeful elbow jabs there were on the way back, mmm... it's a pleasure even to remember.

Nevertheless, things were moving, and they were moving not only in the direction of expanding my magical arsenal.

To confess, I didn't even try to investigate the interaction of adamantium with magic in an academic vein.

That is, there wasn't a series of a thousand and one experiments on the reaction to this or that energy spectrum with a thousand and one isolated samples, creating test batches of enchanted items from it, and testing them for load and reliability.

I didn't need all that due to the fact that in magic, many things are intuitive and do not imply such a thing as incompatibility revealed over time.

If some material is incompatible with some type of magic or a specific magical effect, it will be obvious immediately, at the very first attempt to influence it with the said magic.

If everything works the first moment, it will continue to work without the risk of sudden explosions, breakage, or crumbling to dust.

Basically, I tested adamantium only for the possibility of interfering with the work of the abilities of the Spear of the Kings of Asgard.

There were quite a lot of those abilities, and far from all of them could be tested sitting underground, let alone that even fewer of them were easy to cram into the framework of a laboratory study on material not yet applied to Gungnir.

In short, I didn't notice the surprise right away, too absorbed in the process of inventing laboratory stands itself.

And the surprise, meanwhile, was a doozy.
