Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: The Rival That Ace Left Behind

Grand Line — Sabaody Archipelago

The shattered remains of the Pacifista smoked across the mangrove roots.

Broken metal twitched once. Then stopped.

Sparks hissed out from its ruined body, the single crushing blow that had caved in its frame still fresh enough to leave the smell of scorched iron hanging in the air.

For a brief moment, nobody spoke.

The Straw Hats stared.

Not because they didn't understand what had happened.

But because they did.

They had just spent everything they had trying to bring that Pacifista down. They had fought with urgency, frustration, and desperation, only for the thing to keep standing like some nightmare made of steel and lasers.

And then this green-haired Marine had arrived, and destroyed it in one hit.

Tenjin lowered his arm, bark and wood peeling back from it in slow ripples until his skin returned to normal. His coat settled over his shoulders again as though the destruction around him had nothing to do with him.

Then he looked at the Straw Hats.

Luffy's eyes narrowed immediately.

He stepped forward, planting himself between Tenjin and the rest of the crew, body still tense from the fight with the Pacifista. His breathing was rough, face marked with sweat and strain, but his eyes were clear now.

Focused.

This Marine was not just another problem.

He was the problem.

Behind him, Nami, Usopp, Chopper, Robin, Franky, and Brook slowly regathered themselves, all of them in varying states of exhaustion. Zoro and Sanji were nowhere near them at the moment, scattered elsewhere in the chaos of the archipelago.

Luffy stared at Tenjin.

Then said, slowly, "You're strong."

Tenjin's eyes settled on him.

"So you're Straw Hat."

Luffy frowned. "Yeah."

Tenjin gave the smallest nod.

"I fought Ace."

That got Luffy's full attention.

His eyes widened.

"You what?!"

The others reacted too.

Nami blinked in disbelief. Chopper gasped. Usopp made a sound halfway between panic and fascination. Robin's eyes sharpened just slightly. Franky folded his arms more tightly. Brook tilted his head.

Tenjin's expression did not change.

"I fought him," he repeated. "And he told me something interesting."

Luffy did not speak.

He was listening now with the kind of complete attention he only gave when something touched one of the few places in him that actually mattered.

Tenjin looked at him directly.

"He told me," he said, "that you'd be my perfect rival."

Luffy blinked.

Then blinked again.

And in that instant, memory clicked into place.

He pointed at Tenjin with a sudden burst of realization.

"Oh!"

His face lit up.

"You're that guy Koby talked about!"

Tenjin raised a brow.

Luffy squinted at him, trying very hard to remember.

"Tengin?"

Tenjin's eye twitched.

"…No."

"Tenchi?"

"No."

"Tenguy?"

"No."

Usopp leaned over and whispered, "That's definitely not it."

Luffy snapped his fingers. "Tenjiiin!"

Tenjin let out a slow breath through his nose.

"Close enough."

Before anything else could be said, a furious voice cut into the moment.

"YOU AGAIN!"

All eyes shifted.

Sentomaru stood not far off, giant axe resting near him, face twisted in visible irritation as he stared at Tenjin like the younger Marine had personally committed a crime against order itself.

"You've got some nerve showing up here after ignoring everything I told you!" Sentomaru barked.

Tenjin glanced at him and immediately looked unimpressed.

"You were the one trying to order me around."

"I was trying to coordinate the battlefield!"

"You were trying to tell me what to do."

Sentomaru stepped forward, teeth gritted. "That's because someone had to!"

Tenjin folded his arms. "And that someone wasn't you."

The vein at Sentomaru's temple practically announced itself to the world.

The Straw Hats watched the argument with a mix of confusion and caution. None of them understood the full relationship here, but one thing was obvious—

The Marines weren't working together very smoothly.

Sentomaru pointed at Tenjin. "You are a complete pain in the neck!"

Tenjin gave him a flat look. "You say that like it's new information."

Sentomaru looked one sentence away from trying violence.

Luffy, however, was already done waiting.

He rolled his shoulders once and looked at his crew.

"This guy's bad news," he said.

His tone had changed.

The lightness from moments ago disappeared.

This was captain's voice now.

"We go all out from the start."

The Straw Hats reacted instantly.

Even exhausted, even wounded, even after the Pacifista, they moved with immediate understanding. Positions shifted. Stances lowered. Eyes hardened.

Tenjin looked over them and gave the faintest smile.

"Good."

He stepped forward.

"Then don't disappoint me."

What happened next came all at once.

Nami moved first.

She leapt back and raised the Clima-Tact overhead, spinning it with practiced speed as clouds gathered unnaturally fast above the battlefield. Static built in the air, sharp enough to sting the skin.

"Thunder Lance Tempo!"

A spear of lightning came crashing down toward Tenjin.

At the exact same moment, Usopp fired from the side.

"Atlas Comet!"

A massive explosive shot screamed through the air, aimed for Tenjin's flank.

Robin's eyes never left the target.

"Cien Fleur… Delphinium!"

Arms bloomed all around Tenjin in a dense storm of limbs, each one striking with force enough to smash stone.

Franky planted his feet.

"Weapons Left!"

A missile blast roared from his arm.

And Brook—

Blade drawn, body leaning low, soul and steel moving together—

"Hanauta Sancho: Yahazu Giri!"

The slash sang through the air.

For a brief second, it looked overwhelming.

Lightning from above.

Explosives from one side.

A monster's charge from the front.

Franky's missile.

Brook's sword.

A full crew attack, timed by instinct and desperation.

Then the smoke broke.

And Tenjin was still standing there.

The lightning had passed through him in part, cracking through bark and leaves before grounding uselessly into roots that spread beneath him.

Usopp's explosion had blown apart part of his shoulder and torso—

Only for the hole to fill itself in again with spiraling vines and wood.

Robin's arms had struck, yes, but striking a Logia body without the means to truly affect it was like trying to subdue a storm with hands alone.

Franky's missile had detonated against a wall of hardened bark that erupted from the ground at the last instant.

Brook's blade had cut cleanly through Tenjin's neck—

And passed through it.

Tenjin moved.

Fast.

Far faster than his earlier casual posture had suggested.

He was suddenly in front of Nami, one hand snapping forward as thick bark spread over his arm.

A single backhand sent her skidding violently across the roots and crashing beside Usopp.

Usopp tried to fire again—

Roots grabbed his wrist, yanked him off balance, and slammed him to the ground before he could complete the shot.

Robin's hands bloomed at Tenjin's shoulders, neck, and arms in a desperate attempt to hold him still.

Tenjin clicked his tongue.

The wooden growth on his body erupted outward in a violent flare, shredding through the clutch of extra arms and forcing Robin back with a sharp gasp of pain.

Franky charged with a roar, metallic body throwing all its weight forward.

Tenjin met him with a giant wooden fist rising from the ground beneath him.

It uppercut Franky so hard his whole body folded upward before being launched backward into a pile of shattered Pacifista remains.

Brook came in low, blade singing again.

Tenjin let the cut pass through his torso and answered with a kick reinforced by twisting root and bark that sent the skeleton musician spinning across the field like scattered ivory.

In seconds—

The crew was down bulldozed.

Brutally.

Thoroughly.

Luffy's face hardened with real anger now.

He shot forward alone.

"Don't mess with my crew!"

Steam exploded off his body as he entered Gear Second, speed rising instantly. His fists blurred as he closed the distance.

"Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling!"

A barrage of punches hammered into Tenjin's body from every angle, fast enough to turn the air itself into a machine-gun beat of impact.

But every punch passed through.

Through leaves.

Through bark.

Through wood.

Through a body that simply was not solid in the way Luffy needed it to be.

Luffy's eyes widened.

Tenjin looked at him through the blur of attacks.

Then one root-wrapped arm shot forward and slammed into Luffy's stomach with enough force to stop the entire assault at once.

Luffy coughed.

His body bent.

And Tenjin drove him into the ground hard enough to crack the mangrove root beneath them.

Silence followed.

Broken, heavy silence.

The Straw Hats lay scattered around the battlefield, every single one of them beaten down.

Tenjin stood in the center of it, not even breathing hard.

Nami, grimacing from where she had fallen, forced herself up onto one elbow and glared at him.

"If you're here because Luffy punched a World Noble…" she said through pain, "then what kind of hypocrite does that make you? You did the same thing."

Tenjin looked at her.

His face did not change.

"I don't care about World Nobles," he said.

The words came out flat.

"They can all die for all I care."

The crew stared at him.

Luffy, still trying to push himself up, looked up too.

Tenjin's eyes shifted back to him.

"What I care about," he said, "is Straw Hat Luffy."
