Chapter 91 - Volume 2, Chapter 28: The Man Who Died Standing

The black-hulled Red Force sliced through the turbulent, foam-crested waves of the New World, its massive sails catching the fierce sea wind as it raced toward the gates of Marineford.

At the bow of the vessel stood Shanks. His black cloak billowing like a shadow in the wind, and his right hand rested casually on the hilt of his legendary saber, Gryphon. A massive, rare grin split his scarred face, his eyes fixed single-mindedly on the distant horizon where the sky was stained a dark, apocalyptic crimson.

"Look at him," Yasopp chuckled, leaning back against the ship's railing as he cleaned the scope of his rifle. "I haven't seen the Boss smile like that since we raided that hoard of high-grade sake in the West Blue."

Lucky Roux took a massive bite out of a cooked rack of meat, grease glistening on his round chin as he laughed heartily. "He isn't smiling about the sake, Yasopp! He's thinking about his little brother! Hey, Captain! Are you sure you're sailing into the most dangerous war zone on the planet to negotiate peace, or are you just eager to show off in front of Tenjin?"

"Yeah, Captain," Yasopp teased, a cheeky grin playing on his lips. "The kid's a Marine captain. If he sees his outlaw big brother showing up to crash his workplace, he might just arrest you on the spot!"

Shanks didn't turn around, but his chuckle carried over the roar of the ocean. "Let him try. If he's strong enough to arrest me, I'd face that jail cell with pride."

"Cut him some slack, you two," Benn Beckman spoke smoothly, exhaling a thick plume of gray smoke from his cigarette as he walked up to the bow, his cool, stoic presence anchoring the crew's hyperactive banter. "The Captain knows the stakes. Marineford is currently a powder keg. If we don't time this entry perfectly, the entire era splits in half."

Shanks' smile slowly faded, his expression shifting into one of absolute, razor-sharp seriousness. He turned around to face his executive commanders, his single arm gesturing toward the horizon. The casual, fun-loving pirate was gone; in his place stood an Emperor of the Sea, carrying an aura so immense it made the surrounding ocean swell.

"Beckman is right," Shanks said, his deep voice carrying an unyielding weight. "We aren't just going there to swap stories. We are going to stop this war. The World Government and the Whitebeard Pirates are locked in a cycle of mutual destruction that will swallow the future of the sea. Get ready, everyone. If anyone. Marine or pirate wants to keep spilling blood, they'll have to face us next. Are you with me?"

"Ohoo!!!" the Red Hair Pirates roared in unison, their weapons raised as the Red Force prepared to plunge into the maw of history.

Meanwhile, back at the fractured plaza of Marineford, the twin roars of Conqueror's Haki had bought a momentary, miraculous window of time.

Taking advantage of the sudden unconsciousness of the executioners, Monkey D. Luffy scrambled up a makeshift ramp constructed by Inazuna.

"Luffy!" a booming, heartbroken voice echoed from the top.

Vice Admiral Garp stood at the apex of the ramp, his legendary fists clenched, his face distorted by an agonizing, internal war between his duty as a Marine hero and his love for his family. "I told you to turn back! As a Marine Vice Admiral, I cannot let you pass!"

"Get out of the way, Grandpa!!!" Luffy screamed, tears streaming down his face as he charged forward, his fist winding back.

Garp raised his fist to strike, but as he looked at his grandson's desperate, tear-stained face, his heart shattered. His muscles went soft. His legendary Armament Haki dissolved. He let his guard down, allowing Luffy's desperate, rubber-infused punch to connect dead-on.

BOOM!

Garp was thrown off the side of the ramp, crashing heavily into the stone debris below. With the path cleared, Luffy lunged onto the platform. Mr. 3, disguised as a fallen executioner, quickly manifested a key molded from pure, dense candle wax, sliding it into the sea-prism stone handcuffs locking Ace's wrists.

"Ace!!!" Luffy yelled.

SHAAAA!

The handcuffs clicked open. A split-second later, Sengoku's massive, golden Buddha form launched a devastating, shockwave-emitting palm strike that obliterated the entire wooden platform. But it was too late.

From the center of the collapsing debris, a magnificent, cataclysmic dome of fire and rubber erupted outward, casting a brilliant orange glow over the entire plaza. Portgas D. Ace was free.

"You've always been a pain in the neck, Luffy!" Ace laughed, his body transforming entirely into swirling, high-velocity flames as he landed back-to-back with his younger brother.

The two brothers fought like a synchronized tempest, tearing through the Marine vanguard with a beautiful blend of fire and rubber. For a fleeting second, it looked as if the pirates might actually win the day.

But then, the air grew violently, unnaturally hot.

"To think you scum are celebrating," Admiral Akainu rumbled, stepping slowly through the smoke, his entire body churning with a thick, bubbling layer of liquid magma. His eyes locked onto the brothers with pure, lethal contempt. "The son of the Revolutionary Dragon, and the biological spawn of the Pirate King... to let both of you escape today would be the ultimate failure of Absolute Justice."

"Get out of our way, Akainu!" Ace warned, his fists coiling with fire.

Akainu let out a dark, mocking sneer. "Your father, Edward Newgate, is nothing but a pathetic relic from a bygone era. A loser who couldn't even become the King of the Seas. He lived his entire life as a failure, ruling over a family of play-pretend orphans, and now he is going to die in this frozen gutter."

Ace's eyes flared with a sudden, violent rage. "Take... take that back! Pops gave us a place to belong! He is a great man!"

"Ace, don't! We have to go!" Luffy screamed, trying to grab his brother's arm.

But Ace's loyalty to Whitebeard was his ultimate weakness. He turned back, his entire arm expanding into a roaring column of fire as he clashed directly with Akainu's massive, molten fist.

BOOM!!!

The collision was violent, but the elemental hierarchy was absolute. Magma. The force of natural, liquid earth simply consumed the heat of the fire. Akainu's molten fist burned straight through Ace's flames, sending him flying backward, his skin severely blistered.

"Fire is merely heat," Akainu muttered coldly, his gaze shifting past Ace to target a completely defenseless, exhausted Luffy who had dropped to his knees. "But magma is an element that burns even fire itself. Die, son of Dragon!"

Akainu lunged forward, his molten arm expanding into a giant, churning fist of liquid magma aimed directly at Luffy's skull.

"Luffy!!!"

Ace didn't hesitate. He threw himself directly into the path of the strike, his physical body acting as an immovable shield.

PZT!!!

A sickening, wet sound echoed through the plaza. Akainu's molten hand pierced cleanly through Ace's chest, the superheated magma instantly destroying his vital organs.

Time seemed to stop. Luffy's eyes dilated to pinpricks as he watched his brother slowly collapse forward. He caught him in his arms, his hands instantly stained with Ace's blood.

"L-Luffy... thank you... for loving me," Ace whispered, his voice fading into a gentle, heartbreaking sigh as his flame was permanently snuffed out, his body sliding lifelessly onto the cold stone.

"Ah... Ah..." Luffy stared at his brother's lifeless body, his mind completely fracturing under the weight of the unimaginable grief. A silent, agonizing scream tore through his throat before his eyes rolled back, his body collapsing into a completely catatonic, unresponsive shell.

"A catatonic waste," Akainu sneered, raising his molten fist once more to execute the younger brother. "I will send you to join him!"

The battlefield degenerated into absolute, mindless slaughter. Even with the goal of saving Ace gone, the Marines, driven by Akainu's ruthless commands, continued to chase down and murder the fleeing, grieving pirates. The scent of blood, sulfur, and burning flesh was suffocating.

"Stop this... please..."

Down in the plaza, Koby fell to his knees, his hands clutching his head in absolute agony. His newly awakened Observation Haki was registering the frantic, terrified voices of thousands of soldiers. Both Marine and pirate vanishing from existence one by one. The sheer, psychological weight of the senseless slaughter was tearing his mind apart.

With a sudden, desperate surge of courage, Koby ran directly into the path of Admiral Akainu, who was pursuing the retreating pirates. Koby threw his arms wide, tears streaming down his face as he screamed at the top of his lungs.

"STOP THIS BLOODSHED!!! WE'VE ALREADY WON THE WAR! CHASING THEM DOWN AND SACRIFICING MORE LIVES IS JUST A USELESS WASTE OF SOLDIERS! PLEASE, JUST STOP!!!"

Akainu skidded to a halt, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated disgust as he looked down at the weeping trainee. "A Marine... wasting precious seconds to beg for the lives of criminals? You are a coward, kid. And a coward has no place in the Marines. Your 'justice' is treason!"

Without a shred of hesitation, Akainu raised his colossal, bubbling magma fist high above his head, aiming a lethal, descending strike designed to melt Koby into nothingness.

"Die for your weakness!" Akainu roared.

Koby closed his eyes, bracing for the burning end.

"KOBY!!!"

A violent, desperate emerald-tinted blur exploded from the smoke. Tenjin, utilizing every single drop of his remaining stamina, forced his severely burned legs into a high-velocity, ground-based sprint. He didn't care about the pain of his raw skin; he didn't care about the elemental disadvantage. His friend was about to die.

BOOM!

Tenjin threw himself directly in front of Koby, planting his boots firmly into the shattered stone. He drove both hands forward, channeling his Wood properties past their absolute, physical limits.

An immense, multi-layered wall of timber erupted from his arms, locking together in a thick, defensive phalanx to catch Akainu's descending fist.

CRASH!!!

The impact was a nightmare of kinetic pressure and suffocating heat. Akainu's magma burned straight through the wood on contact. The intense, blistering heat melted the timber into smoking ash within a fraction of a second, the liquid fire dripping onto Tenjin's arms and chest.

"ARGHHHHHHH!!!" Tenjin shrieked in absolute, white-hot agony.

The heat charred his flesh, his skin blackening as he desperately forced new, fresh layers of wood to sprout from his bleeding palms, barely keeping the magma from touching Koby. His muscles were tearing, his vision turning black, his green hair singed to the scalp.

"Grus! Now!!!" Tenjin roared through his teeth, a spray of blood escaping his lips.

Reacting to the signal, Prince Grus slammed his palms against the ground, a massive clay hand erupting from the debris to grab a paralyzed Koby by the collar and yank him violently backward out of the danger zone.

But Tenjin was still pinned. His strength finally failed, his wooden shield crumbling into a pile of burning coal as Akainu's massive, molten hand remained pressed against his chest, slowly melting through his defenses. Tenjin fell to his knees, gasping for air, his body completely charred and broken.

"You are an anomaly, Tenjin," Akainu spoke coldly, his face inches from the boy's face as he prepared a second, fatal magma punch. "Your treason ends here. I will melt you down to the bone."

Akainu drew his molten fist back, the superheated liquid fire swirling with absolute, lethal force.

Tenjin looked up through his blurred, bleeding vision. He couldn't move. He couldn't run. 'Is this... where my justice ends? he thought, a bitter, stubborn smirk playing on his lips.

CLANG!!!

A sudden, earth-shattering shockwave of kinetic force detonated through the plaza.

The superheated heat of Akainu's magma fist was instantly neutralized. The smoke and dust cleared in a single, violent sweep of wind, revealing a figure standing directly in front of a kneeling, charred Tenjin.

Shanks stood there. His legendary black cloak billowed in the freezing wind, his single hand gripping the hilt of his polished saber, Gryphon. With an effortless, majestic grace, his sword had intercepted Akainu's massive, molten fist dead-on, the edge of the steel humming with an invisible, high-tier layer of Haki that kept the magma from melting the blade.

The entire battlefield froze. The screaming, the cannon fire, the clashing of swords. Everything ground to an absolute, terrified halt.

"R-Red Hair... Shanks?!" Akainu bared his teeth, his eyes widening in absolute shock as he felt the colossal, immovable gravity of the Emperor's presence blocking his strike.

Shanks didn't look at Akainu. Instead, he slowly tilted his head down, looking back at the bleeding, severely charred green-haired boy kneeling in the dust behind him. His eyes, usually warm and carefree, were filled with a deeply protective, terrifyingly furious glare that could have withered a sea king.

"You did well, Tenjin," Shanks spoke, his deep, resonant voice carrying an unyielding, protective warmth. "You held the line. Now... let your big brother handle the rest."
