Team Rocket Base
"Koga, Sabrina, and Feng Che together should have no issues, provided they open the Spirit World rift in Lavender Town," Giovanni mused, a cold, satisfied smile playing on his lips. "Flooding the town with Ghost-types will keep the League busy. It's the perfect diversion. Even though Mewtwo is a success, there are always risks. We need contingencies."
He turned his gaze toward a classified file on his desk. "The Legendary Bird Fusion Project must begin. The era of Kanto lacking high-tier god-beasts ends with me. I will unite Kanto and Johto under the shadow of Rocket, using them as a springboard to consume the world. By the time I'm done, the League will be nothing but a footnote in history."
Lavender Tower
"Feng Che, the mission is simple: open the Spirit World rift," Sabrina explained, her crystalline eyes reflecting a cold light. "You were summoned because Lt. Surge is tied down in Vermilion by a Gyarados outbreak. Koga and I will be the primary vanguard; you will provide support. The guardian of the rift is exceptionally powerful—nearly at the Elite Four level."
"We aren't testing you just for fun," Koga added, clarifying that the previous battles weren't a personal vendetta. "If you aren't strong enough, the guardian of the rift will literally harvest your soul. The real tower has nine floors. The eighth is the Guardian's lair; the ninth is the seal."
Sabrina continued, "The seal is maintained by a Spirit Stone. We must defeat the guardian—a Millennium Gengar—and take the stone to break the seal. This Gengar is a master of Shadow Stealth and can create infinite clones. I will use my psychic powers to pin it down while Koga delivers the killing blow."
She looked at Feng Che. "Your job is to use your Litten. Its fire must illuminate the floor, dispersing the shadows to limit the Gengar's hiding places."
A Millennium Gengar... Feng Che thought, his pulse quickening. A thousand years of guarding a rift must have made it monstrously strong. My motto: safety first, mission second. I'm not dying in a graveyard today.
Sabrina twirled a strand of her silken black hair around her finger. "We move tomorrow night. We'll use Rocket launchers to blast a hole in the clouds. According to ancient Rocket texts, this Gengar's strength is halved under the light of the full moon."
Strength halved by moonlight? Feng Che frowned. The texts probably meant Moonblast or Fairy-type energy. Rocket's archaeologists might have misread the context.
The 8th Floor
On the hidden eighth floor, the Millennium Gengar had its ear pressed to the floor, eavesdropping.
The rumor about "moonlight weakening it" was actually a lie the Gengar had spread itself. It had been trapped in this tower for a thousand years, evolving from a Gastly to a Gengar, but it had never seen the moon. It was bound by an ancient, stone Poké Ball placed atop a central pillar—a relic of a bygone era that enslaved its mind.
Whenever a trainer entered, the stone ball would override Gengar's consciousness, forcing it to attack like a mindless puppet. It had consumed many souls, but each soul only increased its longing for the outside world. It wanted to be free, but the psychic geis in its head prevented it from speaking. Every time it tried to warn an intruder, its body would lock up, and the slaughter would begin anew.
If only someone could save me from this infinite hell, Gengar thought, weeping soundlessly as it stared at its blood-stained hands.
The following night, Rocket helicopters swarmed the tower.
"Target the cloud layer! Launch Cloud-Bursting Shells!"
BOOM. The sky erupted in a rain of chemical fire. The unnatural clouds of Lavender Town were torn apart, and for the first time in a millennium, a silver crescent moon appeared. Silver light poured down like liquid silk, illuminating the ghost town.
"Now! Feng Che, Koga, move!"
Sabrina's eyes glowed a vibrant blue. Her massive psychic aura caused her hair to drift upward. She shattered the hidden seal on the staircase, and the trio ascended.
The eighth floor was a charnel house of ancient bones and flickering blue-white Will-O-Wisps. In the center, Gengar's eyes turned a manic red as the stone ball took control.
[Gengar: No... I don't want to fight... I wanted to see the moon!]
Its mind screamed, but its body vanished into the floor.
"Watch out! Shadow Stealth!" Sabrina warned.
"Go, Arbok!" Koga released his ace. This Arbok was a Level 50 monster, a battle-scarred veteran of the Pseudo-Elite rank.
Sabrina released Alakazam, flooding it with her own energy. Alakazam's aura flared until it briefly touched the Elite Four tier. Terrifying, Feng Che noted. She can force a Pokémon to break its level cap temporarily.
"Go, Litten!"
Litten appeared and immediately shivered at the intense chill. It flared its back, unleashing a three-meter-high pillar of fire that turned the dark hall into a bright arena.
Suddenly, Feng Che felt a cold weight on his back. A long, wet red tongue lashed out, licking him from neck to waist. Golden electricity crackled across his skin. Lick.
Feng Che collapsed, his muscles seizing in a state of Paralysis.
"胡地 (Alakazam), Future Sight!" Sabrina barked, her eyes flashing with anger.
The psychic attack slammed into the spot Gengar had occupied a split second earlier, but the ghost was gone. Sabrina's aura intensified as she frantically scanned for the Gengar's next move.
Feng Che gritted his teeth, his body wracked by sparks. He fumbled for a Parlyz Heal in his ring, but his fingers were numb. He finally managed to swallow the medicine. Just as the electricity faded, a pair of red eyes appeared in his shadow once more.
