It was 3 in the morning outside in New York City, and despite the hour, one could still hear the occasional noise of cars passing on the highway and some people leaving night shifts or heading toward their work.
In a room inside a brick house, two young people could be seen lying on the bed, their bodies still sweaty after all the activity they had performed.
With an arm around Hannah's delicate body, Aaron ran his hand delicately up and down her smooth back while Hannah kept her eyes closed, enjoying the attention she was receiving.
"What are you thinking about?" Hannah asked, breaking the comfortable silence in the room as she noticed her boyfriend had a faraway look, as if something were troubling him.
"Nothing important," Aaron replied, trying to soothe her as he gave her a kiss on her forehead to calm his girlfriend; but Hannah, knowing Aaron well, immediately climbed on top of him, ending up astride him.
"Seriously, what's going on?" Hannah asked him, taking Aaron's face in both her hands. His gaze was fixed on Hannah's bare breasts, at which she simply rolled her eyes, waiting for her boyfriend to answer.
With a weary sigh, Aaron knew there was no way to avoid this conversation, so taking a deep breath, he decided to be completely honest with Hannah. "Simply what Drew said made me reflect," he began before inhaling deeply and continuing with his explanation.
"What will happen to us?" Aaron asked Hannah, the question that had been circling his head these past few months, thinking that they could indeed end up going to different universities, perhaps even on opposite ends of the country.
Aaron knew that the option of going to the same university like Drew and Sam could be a choice, but he couldn't force Hannah to accompany him if that meant affecting her future.
At that question, Hannah remained briefly silent, not knowing how to respond, as it was a question she had never asked herself—or rather, had tried by all means to avoid. "So, you think we should break up?" Hannah whispered in a low voice, slightly lowering her head.
"No, of course not," Aaron said quickly, gently taking her chin to plant a sweet kiss on her lips. "But we also have to be aware that there is a possibility we might study at different universities," Aaron told her, causing Hannah to bite her lip slightly, a gesture Aaron knew meant she was hiding something from him.
"About that..." Hannah said, then leaned slightly toward her nightstand and opened one of the drawers, taking out a letter and passing it immediately to Aaron.
With a furrowed brow, Aaron picked up the envelope to then open it and read the first sentence, which surprised him.
Ms. Hannah Lawson, the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is pleased to inform you of your acceptance for the upcoming semester...
That single sentence, along with the Columbia logo in the top corner of the letter, was all Aaron needed to read to know what was weighing on Hannah. "You got in," was the only word he could utter while Hannah simply nodded in confirmation.
Opening her mouth to say something, Hannah was immediately surrounded by Aaron's arms as he squeezed her against his chest. "Congratulations," Aaron whispered in a low voice while Hannah also wrapped her arms around him, deepening the embrace.
Aaron knew that Hannah's dream was to study medicine, which was why she had worked so hard during these years, even ending up being chosen as valedictorian of her year—the reason she had been practicing her speech these last few days.
"I had no idea you had applied to Columbia," Aaron said, surprised. "I applied months ago; I didn't say anything because I didn't know if I would be accepted," replied Hannah, who had screamed with joy upon receiving her acceptance letter, alerting even the neighbors.
"You deserve it," Aaron replied with a sincere smile of pride toward Hannah. "And you?" this time it was Hannah's turn to ask. "To be honest, I don't know; I've received several offers and I still haven't chosen one," Aaron replied honestly, since he had not yet picked a good option.
"And haven't you considered Villanova?" Hannah asked him, partly because she knew Drew would go there, but deep down the main reason was that the university campus was in Pennsylvania, which was only a 2-hour drive from New York.
Selfishly, Hannah hoped Aaron would stay close so they could spend more time together and not have to wait months to see each other or have a date that wasn't through a mobile screen.
"The truth is, yes," and Aaron wasn't lying. Villanova was an option he had evaluated thoroughly, thinking about the team's record and facilities, as well as the kind of coach Jay Wright was.
"I simply haven't made a decision yet," Aaron told Hannah, who simply nodded in response. "I just want you to know that no matter what decision you make, I will support you," she said as her hand rested directly on Aaron's face.
At that, Aaron had no better response than to kiss her lips again in a chaste kiss that gradually increased in intensity, with Hannah wrapping her arms around his neck, deepening the kiss while her hips began to move in circles.
"Second round?" Aaron asked with a smile before switching positions under Hannah's giggle, letting themselves be carried away by passion once again tonight.
7:00 AM
Aaron woke up feeling a slight weight on his body, which brought a smile to his face as he saw it was Hannah, sleeping soundly with her head resting on his chest while their legs were still intertwined.
Coming out of his daydream, a look of panic reflected on his face as he looked at the nightstand clock, which clearly marked 7 in the morning. This only caused Aaron's panic to increase as he slowly placed Hannah on a pillow and prepared to get dressed while glancing at his phone, which protruded from his pants.
Mom (9 missed calls, 20 messages)Aunt Paola (5 missed calls, 17 messages)Drew (2 missed calls, 3 messages)
Seeing how the screen lit up with missed calls and messages received throughout the night, Aaron knew he would be in trouble as soon as he reached his house, but now the most critical situation was leaving the house without anyone realizing he had been there in the first place.
Once completely changed, Aaron approached and planted a kiss on the forehead of Hannah, who simply stirred in response, sound asleep. Carefully, Aaron opened the door and, looking both ways, realized the hallway was clear, so tiptoeing, he began to slowly go down the stairs toward the first floor.
Once downstairs, he headed immediately toward the door, and just as his hand rested on the knob and he was about to open it, a throat-clearing caught his attention, causing Aaron to tense up and turn in the direction the voice came from.
In the kitchen, a man could be seen holding a cup of coffee, with a handgun and a police badge sitting on the kitchen counter. "Aaron, what brings you here so early," Mr. Lawson said in his direction.
"Mr. Lawson," he said toward the officer with an awkward smile, seeing he had been caught, especially by the person he would least want to meet while leaving Hannah's room so early in the morning with wrinkled clothes.
"You didn't answer the question: what are you doing here so early," this time Mr. Lawson used a deeper tone of voice and his gaze became sharper, as if he were in front of a criminal. "Would you believe me if I told you I just arrived?" Aaron replied with an awkward smile, causing the latter to huff in response.
Huffing, Mr. Lawson simply continued staring at the young man before him, giving him the same look he gave people he interrogated at the station. "At 7 in the morning, when you live 30 minutes from here?" Mr. Lawson interrogated, raising an eyebrow.
At that, Aaron fell silent, thinking quickly of a possible answer that wouldn't get him into more trouble. "I simply stayed to sleep," he replied.
"Just to sleep?" was Mr. Lawson's next question, causing Aaron's face to flush in response as he thought about the situation he was in. Just as he was about to open his mouth, he was interrupted by Mr. Lawson's raised hand. "Just keep it to yourself; I don't want the details of what you and my little princess did up there," he said.
Aaron was about to speak until he decided it was best to simply close his mouth and nod his head in a clear sign of confirmation, then turn and open the door, ready to leave for the subway station.
"And Aaron," Mr. Lawson said, causing the latter to stop and turn his head toward him. "Next time, please don't lock Boss up; the poor thing was barking and scratching at the door," Mr. Lawson said, causing the aforementioned dog to peek out from the hallway and bark in response, making Aaron simply nod mechanically before exiting through the door quickly.
Once outside on the street, Aaron began walking toward the subway station while his brain quickly began thinking of any possible excuse for his mother and aunt, who would likely be waiting for him.
30 Minutes Later
Going up the stairs of his condo, Aaron stood still, staring at the door of his house while he could hear the voices inside.
Seriously considering whether it was best to enter or leave, Aaron inserted the key into the lock and slowly peeked his head in, causing the voices inside to stop and all eyes in the room to fix on him.
Inside the apartment were Melissa and Paola, who were glaring at Aaron, while Hector simply had an ironic smile and Mia was sitting in her baby chair, getting her hands dirty with the mush in front of her.
"Well, look who deigned to show up," Melissa said ironically while shooting daggers at her son with her eyes.
Aaron simply stood there in silence, waiting for his punishment. "¿Qué pasa? ¿Te comió la lengua el gato?" Paola said in Spanish toward Aaron, who simply remained quiet, knowing it was best in this situation not to argue with the two women in front of him.
"Are you not going to say anything?" Suddenly Paola turned her head toward Hector, who, surprised by this, remained briefly silent. "Uh... Did you use protection?" That simple question caused Aaron to put a hand to his face while Melissa and Paola rolled their eyes.
"Seriously, is that the only question you could think of?" Paola said, shifting her annoyance from Aaron to Hector, who simply tried to appease Paola while they both argued quickly in Spanish.
"Well?" Melissa asked toward her son, who had not said a word since he arrived. "I'm sorry," Aaron replied automatically, knowing that nothing he said would justify his absence.
"What are you sorry for?" Melissa continued, not willing to let the matter go easily. "I'm sorry for not arriving on time or sending a message," Aaron replied mechanically while Melissa nodded, satisfied with his apology.
"Grounded for two weeks," Melissa said bluntly, while Aaron nodded in response, knowing he deserved it and that if he said anything else, his mother might increase the punishment. "Now go to your room," she told him, nodding her head toward the apartment hallway.
With his head down, Aaron headed straight to his room, and as soon as he closed the door, he collapsed onto his bed, the accumulated lack of sleep taking its toll.
So, in a matter of seconds, Aaron's consciousness faded as he went straight to the world of dreams.
