Chapter 110 - Book Two: Chapter Ten

Like a drunken sailor, Tormund struggled to his feet, shouting, "By a great she mammoth's hairy teat, whar happened to us? The younger Mangana laughed at him, "Sleeping gas, Tormund, come help me kill this Zonian that woke up too early?" Mangana charged the giant brute with Tormund close behind, shouting, "Aye lad...did you have to pick such a large one?" The Zonian swung his great club at the approaching Amanian only to have the blow stopped by Tormund's axe. The field shuddered at the force of the two weapons colliding. Mangana's twin blades began carving into the giant. Realization dawned in the Zonian's eyes that this fight would be his last, and he turned to run only to fall forward with Tormund's axe in his back. The Westerousi troops made quick work of capturing and killing the few Zonians left, and the battle of the north shore was done.

On the south shore of the Bay of Ice, Zonian troops were gathering on the small isthmus from three sunken ships and two that made it to shore on fire. Many of the survivors of the wildfire were seared or singed, but they were solid troops and not about to give up easily. On the wall of Brandon's Rest, Jon watched the guns killing a few of the bedraggled Zonian troops. He turned to Jack, who was manning a gun, saying, "There are several thousand that will make their way to the mainland. We need to mount a response." Jack nodded, and they both ran down to the troops' buildings. Jack shouted orders, and within minutes, they had 500 soldiers ready to fight at their command. 100 sand-kin assassins joined them, and they marched out to face the Zonian invaders. An archer detachment joined them, along with some fighters from the boat builders, and 800 troops marched out to face the Zonians.

Jack knew the lay of the land, and he ordered his troops to take up positions among some rocks at the top of a hill. The archers he placed above them so they could concentrate fire on Zonians that might try to charge the hill. He instructed the archers to focus on any mages that might appear among the enemy troops. The hill Jack had chosen overlooked where the isthmus joined the land, and below them was a small copse of trees where the Zonian's were gathering to avoid direct fire from the Westeros ships and the city guns. Occasional blasts showed that the guns were still at work, even though they had no direct sight of the enemy.

A Zonian lieutenant was the senior officer among those who had made it to land. He took stock of the surviving troops and ordered the deployment of ranged attackers and hand-to-hand fighters. He knew that they were going to have to charge this hill against enemy fire, and he intended to make it work to their advantage. He had three mages among his group, two of whom were powerful veterans and could deliver real destruction to his enemies if they were well defended. He knew that sooner or later, they would face the dreaded explosive barrels and kegs rolling down on them. They had to make a push to overwhelm the smaller force on the hill. He could see that there was a large number of archers arrayed to meet that charge. He had to attack them with full force if they stood any chance of gaining the hilltop.

The Zonian lieutenant sent small groups of unarmed troops (many of his troops had made it to shore without weapons) to probe the Westerosi defense setup. Archers from the hill cut down most of them, but then his counterplan went into effect. Small groups of shield carriers popped up with a mage at their center and began raining fire on the enemy archer positions.

Earlier on the deck of the Sovereign, Arya had assessed the situation on the south shore of the bay. She sent Hassan, Thea, and as many of her wind users as she could spare to join the troops defending. She also had her telepath call for a group of healers to join the defense. They arrived before the enemy mages' fire began falling, and the wind users deflected most of the first round of fireballs. Several archers were injured or killed in that attack, but a female tree-kin got off a lucky arrow shot that killed one of the enemy mages. When the fire first started, she jumped up on a rock and gained a good angle to bisect the shield wall protecting the enemy mage.

The Zonian lieutenant ordered his entire troop forward to assault the hill. He knew that it was now or never, and that only a full rush would give them any chance of defeating the force before them. It was the last order he ever gave, as just when they broke cover, a thrown keg bounced once in front of them and exploded in mid-air. It shattered the forces around him with shrapnel and killed him instantly. Jon and Jack met the few survivors who made it to the top of the hill with deadly force. Jack recognized that 2000 had quickly become 500 poorly equipped, tired enemies and ordered a full charge down the hill. Within minutes, the fight was over, and another 400 Zonians that were still alive were taken prisoner. On the Sovereign's deck, Tyrion turned to Ming and said, "80 more ships down and 420 to go."
