Chapter 143 - Book Two: Chapter Forty Three

As Tormund stepped back, Arya said, "Why are there two moons?" Intevar said, "There are legends that once there were two moons; perhaps this is a vision of long ago." Brienne said, " There is the myth that two moons once filled the sky until one wandered too close to the sun, cracked open from the heat, and released a million dragons." "A million dragons"....Arya trailed off. The sound of her voice echoed off the long walls.

They began searching the furniture for anything, and found nothing, not even dust. "How could a room this old be dust-free?" Hassan said. They started considering the door at the end of the room, speaking about going through it and what might lie on the other side. Siora said, "Wait a moment, let me try something." She had not moved from in front of the mural, and she pointed out a small disc in one corner of the image. As she moved closer to it with her finger, she jerked back in shock. "It's drawing mana from my finger!" As the others came to watch, she moved her finger to the disc again, and something could be seen in the dim light moving from her finger to the disc. The mural changed in color slightly; it seemed more vivid and almost seemed in motion.

"It changed," Tormund said, "But nothing else is happening." As they watched, Arya pointed to the two moons, "The smaller, darker one is moving!" The smaller moon drifted perilously close to the larger one and then began breaking up. First, large chunks of it came away, and then it shattered into countless pieces. Small tufts of dust picked up on the larger moon as if pieces of the smaller one were striking it. They stood in amazement as a long line of pieces began descending towards the planet. Debris began striking on the far end of Essos, and the impacts could be seen. It trailed all the way across Essos and reached Westeros. Larger chunks began striking from Dorne all the way into the north. Then they began hitting the ocean with large splashes and vicious waves that rippled out and hit the western coast of Westeros. Still, the falling continued across the sea until several large meteors struck the island in the sky. Flames and dust burst from the top of that place, and the island seemed to stagger in the sky. Tormund murrmered, "That is a place in the sky, a place where someone could live!" The strikes continued all the way to the western continent and then petered out.

Just when they thought it was over, small glowing orbs spread out into the air from that island in the sky. 12 of them moved in different directions and left a trail behind them on the mural. Some went deep into the west, and some scattered over the continents of Westeros and Essos. Then the mural shifted back to the beginning and stopped. The group stood in stunned silence. What had they just witnessed? Intevar broke the quiet, saying, "We may have just witnessed the beginning of all our histories."

The snow was getting deep in Brandon's Rest, and Bran was itching to get back to King's Landing. The intel teams had finished their discussions of how to gather the troops and train them. They discussed the number of ships needed to determine how many would need to be built, and they argued back and forth over the exact makeup of their invading force. As they closed their plans, Bran was wheeled to Till's steam train and loaded up along with pallets of supplies for the new training facility. The wind trains couldn't brave the deep snow, so they had stopped running, but the steam train kept running. The deer catcher on the front of the steam train was low enough to push the snow from the track. They made a brief stop at Deepwood Motte and then went to unload the supplies at the training grounds. A road had been built from the training ground back to the tracks and the road that ran beside them. Wagons waited in the deep snow to collect the goods. Looking down the road towards the camp, some tents could be seen around the wooden walls, and a few stone buildings were in view. Bran nodded to himself; their effort was expanding, now if it would only bear the proper fruit.

Back at Brandon'e Rest, Gendry and Thomas were at Gendry's new expanded forge working hard on something. Gendry had been turning out many normal weapons for use in the invasion, though the stone-kin were making more, but this was something different. All of their children were playing together at the far end of the giant forge room. Several retainers and teachers were with them. They were acting out some vignette from history, and young Btan was standing on a stool and orating the story. They were so engrossed they didn't even notice their fathers turn and smile at them, and then each other. The two men slapped each other and sat down in chairs, laughing. It was good to be alive and watching their children grow. It didn't take long for them to stand and attack the problem waiting on the forge, though; they were both relentless when it came to innovation at the forge. As they worked, Thomas got a far-away look in his eyes for a moment, then dove back in.
