Chapter 132 - Difficult Questions

The Pemberton headquarters rose up on the eastern side of the financial district. Glass and steel. The afternoon light hit it hard, bouncing off the facade in pale sheets that made her squint.

Audrey slowed as she approached the entrance.

Not hesitation. She told herself it wasn't hesitation. Habit. That was the word she used. Just habit, taking in the building before walking in.

The revolving doors turned steadily. Employees moved in and out, tablets and briefcases tucked under arms. She stepped into the gap and let it push her through.

Inside, the noise of the street cut off like someone had pressed a button.

The lobby stretched upward. Open floors. Polished stone. Her shoes made sharp sounds against it, each step louder than she expected. A long reception desk sat near the elevators. Security guards behind it. Visitors with temporary badges clipped to jackets, waiting.

She stepped forward. Introduced herself.
