A massive sandstorm was closing in fast from the horizon. The sky had already turned a murky, apocalyptic brown. The howling wind whipped sand and gravel against them, stinging their exposed skin and turning it raw and red.
As trained shinobi, Taiichi and his teammates immediately coated their bodies in a thin layer of Chakra to shield themselves. The diplomatic envoys, however, had no such protection.
If they were left exposed to this storm, there wouldn't be anyone left to escort by the time the winds died down.
This was one of those moments where having an Earth Style user on the team was a lifesaver.
Captain Yamaguchi wasted no time. His hands blurred through the seals.
"Earth Style: Mud Wall!"
A solid earthen wall, nearly two feet thick, rose up in front of the group, placing a barrier between the convoy and the storm. As Yamaguchi poured more Chakra into the technique, two more walls rose up on either side.
The three walls formed a U-shape around them, tall and thick enough to block out the worst of the gale. The envoys finally let out a collective sigh of relief.
Then, the storm hit.
The sky was swallowed instantly. The sun vanished into the rolling clouds of sand, leaving only a faint, ghostly outline in the gloom. The dunes seemed to come alive, writhing as layers of sand were stripped away and hurled into the air, creating a chaotic, blinding twilight.
The horses panicked, rearing up and screaming. Taiichi reacted instantly, grabbing the reins and forcing them down before they could bolt. The wind managed to breach the perimeter, shredding the carriage curtains to ribbons.
Everyone squinted, trying to keep the grit out of their eyes. Within moments, the drifting sand had buried them up to their shins. The crack-crack-crack of debris slamming against the Mud Wall was relentless. The sturdy barrier was being sandblasted apart, layer by layer.
Captain Yamaguchi was a combat veteran through and through, and his Earth Style reflected that. It was tough and rigid, but lacked flexibility. The square walls stood defiant against the wind, but their flat surfaces took the full brunt of the force, and the corners didn't seal perfectly.
Taiichi watched the wind and sand force their way through the gaps. The wall had bought them time, but the envoys were still getting battered.
Seeing this, Taiichi stepped forward. He formed a seal and placed both hands on the Captain's wall. Injecting his own Chakra, he began to manipulate the earth. The rigid walls softened and warped. The gaps sealed shut, and the flat surfaces curved backward, becoming aerodynamic.
When Taiichi pulled his hands away, the blocky fortification had transformed into a smooth, seamless dome covering the group. Aside from a small ventilation hole he'd left open, the wind and sand were completely locked out.
"Taiichi, how did you do that? What jutsu is that? I've never seen it before!" Yohei asked, eyes wide with amazement.
"It's not a new jutsu. It's just a remix of the Mud Wall," Taiichi said, waving his hand dismissively. "The Captain uses Earth Style for combat, so his walls are built for impact. I don't main Earth Style, so I focus more on shape manipulation. Different tools for different jobs, that's all."
Yohei nodded thoughtfully, though it wasn't clear if he actually understood the theory or just thought it looked cool.
Captain Yamaguchi, however, knew exactly what he was looking at. While Taiichi's Earth Style didn't have the raw durability of his own, the level of control required to reshape a jutsu like that was insane. There were very few Chunin in the Hidden Leaf who could pull that off.
It required not just a solid grasp of Earth Nature Transformation, but elite-level Shape Manipulation and Chakra Control. It was a testament to Taiichi's terrifyingly well-rounded fundamentals.
Inside the protective dome, the group fell silent. They listened to the wind howling outside and watched the darkened sky through the vent.
The horses calmed down and started munching on their feed bags, the rhythmic crunch-crunch of them chewing beans sounding incredibly peaceful against the storm outside. The guards took the moment to reorganize the luggage that had been scattered by the wind.
"Taiichi, where are you going?" Saori's voice broke the silence.
Taiichi was walking toward the exit hole.
"It's not every day you get to see a sandstorm this big up close. I'm going out to experience it. Don't worry, I'll be fine." Taiichi didn't look back, just waved a hand to tell them to relax.
He stepped out and vanished into the wall of yellow sand, leaving his teammates looking at each other in confusion.
The moment he stepped outside, the hurricane-force wind slapped him in the face, stinging like a thousand needles. He immediately flared his Chakra to shield his body, closing his eyes to navigate solely by sensing.
He climbed step by step to the top of the earthen dome. Sitting cross-legged on the roof, he unleashed his full Chakra presence, extending his spiritual senses outward.
Instantly, everything within a thousand-yard radius appeared in his mind.
The sandstorm was like a rampaging beast. The wall of sand connected the sky to the earth, swallowing the heavens. In the dim chaos, the sun was just a halo of light.
The wind screamed as it carried razor-sharp gravel over the dunes, ripping everything from the surface and hurling it into the sky. The world was nothing but a roar, sounding like ten thousand warhorses charging through the clouds.
Taiichi sat in the eye of the chaos, his robes snapping violently in the wind. He opened his eyes just a slit, peering through his Chakra shield at the distant horizon. That storm could shred steel, and every grain of sand carried the raw, primal violence of the desert.
Time passed. About an hour later, the storm began to fade, and the sun reclaimed the sky.
> [Communed with Nature. Wind Nature Transformation +1000]
Mother Nature really was the best teacher. Witnessing the raw power of the storm gave Taiichi a deeper understanding of the Wind element. The concepts of cutting, tearing, and turbulence were no longer just theories; they were visceral feelings, solidified by the system prompt.
"Good haul?"
Captain Yamaguchi's voice came from behind him. He had come out to check on Taiichi when he didn't return immediately and had stood guard silently while his student meditated.
"Thanks for watching my back, Captain," Taiichi said sincerely. "First time seeing wind that angry. Learned a lot."
He didn't need to say it. Yamaguchi could see the faint aura of wind still swirling around Taiichi's body. Tiny, invisible wind blades were spontaneously forming and slicing small grooves into the earthen dome beneath him. It was a side effect of the intense elemental focus; it would fade once he recalibrated.
Yohei and Saori climbed up just in time to see the phenomenon, staring in stunned silence.
"If I knew that was gonna happen, I would've sat out here too," Yohei sighed with regret. "Maybe I could've picked up Wind Nature Transformation."
Yamaguchi and Saori both rolled their eyes. You couldn't teach that kind of intuition.
The group packed up and resumed their journey. Compared to their departure, however, even the three high-and-mighty envoys looked rough.
The once-luxurious carriage was now a wreck. Only the frame was intact; the expensive silks and gold trim had been shredded by the sandstorm. The sun beat down through the tattered roof, and the guards could hear the diplomats complaining loudly from the inside.
Naturally, the pace picked up. They were moving as fast as the guards could march.
But their luck had apparently run out. Half a day after the sandstorm, Taiichi—doing his routine sensor sweep—picked up a signal.
On a distant dune, a ninja was watching them.
At first, Taiichi assumed it was just routine surveillance by the Sand Village. But as time passed, more signals appeared next to the scout.
Taiichi realized this wasn't an escort; it was a hunting party.
"Captain, we've got company. About half a mile ahead. Six signatures gathered. This doesn't look like a standard patrol."
Yamaguchi frowned. "Combat ready! Yohei, Saori, stay close to the envoys."
The convoy slowed down as the guards tightened their formation.
A while later, the sensors showed the enemy wasn't backing off. In fact, they were closing in.
"Captain, they added another one. They're fanning out in an encirclement formation. Range is down to 800 yards."
Taiichi kept his sensory jutsu active, unslung his short sword from his back, and thumbed the hilt.
Yohei's Sharingan flared to life, triggered by the tension. He stared at the empty horizon. "Passive defense sucks! I say we hit them first."
Yamaguchi and Taiichi exchanged a look. They were thinking the same thing. The enemy was clearly waiting for someone—probably a leader. If they waited any longer, they'd be outnumbered.
"Alright. Taiichi and I will leave Shadow Clones here to bluff them. Our real bodies will go underground and ambush them. Yohei, Saori, hold the line."
Yohei looked bummed about being left behind, but he followed orders without hesitation.
Using the carriage as cover, Yamaguchi and Taiichi swapped with clones. Their real bodies sank into the sand using Earth Style: Underground Submarine Voyage, swimming through the dunes like sharks toward the enemy.
---
Meanwhile, half a mile ahead.
The enemy ninjas were spreading out in a fan formation.
"Captain Iwahira, when do we move? I think they spotted us," a scout said, lowering his binoculars. He had seen the Leaf convoy slow down and tighten up.
"Wait for Ishikura. We spread out too much looking for them," Iwahira said, raising his own binoculars. "These Leaf guys are sharp. Spotted us from way out here."
"So what if they spotted us? What are they gonna do, charge us?" Iwahira sneered confidently. "I'm a Jonin. We've got six Chunin. We have the numbers. Once Ishikura gets here, that's two Jonin. That's a guaranteed kill."
The scout opened his mouth to reply, but before he could speak, the sand beneath the left and right flanks exploded.
BOOM!
By the time the scout turned his head, two of his teammates were already dead on the ground.
"Damn it! They actually attacked?!" Iwahira screamed, rushing toward the left flank to help.
On the right flank, Taiichi surfaced right next to his target. He had already confirmed via sensing that the two ninjas on this side were just Chunin.
He closed the distance instantly. Just as the designated time hit, he burst from the sand, his blade flashing in a silver arc that took the first ninja's head off before he could scream.
The second Chunin reacted then, roaring and charging with a kunai.
But a panicked Chunin was no match for Taiichi.
Taiichi parried the clumsy strike with his short sword. Using the enemy's own momentum, he sidestepped and subtly adjusted his blade angle. He didn't even have to swing; the enemy practically threw his own throat onto Taiichi's edge.
Taiichi didn't even look at the body. He was already sprinting toward the next target.
The enemy's fan formation was perfect for being picked apart one by one. If he was fast enough, he could wipe out his side before they could regroup.
The next Chunin in line was already panicking. He was supposed to be the backup, but his buddies had died in the time it took him to blink. Now, the grim reaper was coming for him.
Panic took over. He fired off his best jutsu.
"Earth Style: Gravel Blast!"
Chakra condensed the sand into jagged rocks, firing them like a shotgun blast at Taiichi.
"Earth Style? Rare choice out here," Taiichi mocked, but his feet didn't stop. Wind Chakra coated his blade, forming an invisible, razor-sharp edge.
He wove through the barrage like a butterfly in a hail storm. The rocks he couldn't dodge, he sliced apart. The wind-enhanced blade cut through the stone like it was tofu.
Taiichi passed through the kill zone without a scratch.
Seeing his jutsu fail, the Chunin tried to retreat while frantically weaving signs for a second attack.
Taiichi didn't give him the chance. His left hand blurred through a one-handed seal sequence.
"Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Jutsu!"
Dozens of small fireballs materialized around him. Unlike the standard version, these moved like guided missiles, arcing toward the Chunin from unpredictable angles.
Taiichi's casting speed was too fast. The Chunin was only halfway through his own signs when he had to break form to dodge the fire.
That hesitation was fatal.
Under the cover of the fireballs, Taiichi flickered. In a heartbeat, he was inside the Chunin's guard.
The Chunin had just dodged the last fireball. His hands were coming together for the final seal of his jutsu.
A short sword appeared out of nowhere and slid effortlessly into his heart.
The Chunin coughed blood, reaching out to grab the Leaf ninja, but his strength vanished. He slumped forward, dead.
Taiichi yanked his blade free and looked toward the other side of the battlefield.
Captain Yamaguchi was an Earth Style specialist—tough, but lacking Taiichi's insane burst damage. Taiichi had cleared three enemies, but the Captain was still tangled up with his second target.
Worse, the remaining two enemies had converged on Yamaguchi. It was now a 3-on-1. And one of them was the Jonin, Iwahira.
Taiichi didn't rest. He flickered, dashing across the desert to assist.
Yamaguchi was in trouble. He had just put down one enemy when the reinforcements arrived. To make matters worse, the Jonin was focusing him down.
Just as Yamaguchi was bracing for a desperate defense, he saw Taiichi sprinting toward him, leaving a trail of three bodies behind.
Yamaguchi's jaw nearly hit the floor. I knew the kid was good, but I didn't think he was this fast.
The enemy trio noticed him too.
Intel said one Jonin! Iwahira screamed internally. This kid fights like a demon! That's two elite-level threats!
If they had known, they never would have engaged. Now, they were committed, and they were terrified.
The three Sand ninjas intensified their attacks, desperate to kill Yamaguchi before Taiichi arrived.
Taiichi saw the danger. He didn't slow down. As he ran, fireballs began to form around him—ten, twenty, thirty. He didn't care about accuracy; he cared about volume.
He unleashed a saturation bombardment on the group.
"Eat this!"
The sheer number of fireballs forced the three enemies to break off their attack and scatter.
With a brute-force entrance, Taiichi shattered their formation and turned the tide.
