For Konoha, the Third Shinobi World War was essentially over. Aside from occasional minor border skirmishes, the village had finally stepped out from under the shadow of war.
After Minato returned, the process of the Third stepping down and the Fourth taking over moved forward at an accelerated pace.
Inside the top-floor conference room of the Hokage Tower, thick wooden doors sealed away the noise of the village, leaving only a heavy, almost stagnant solemnity.
Hiruzen Sarutobi sat at the head of the long table, pipe resting beside him. Thin trails of smoke curled upward, softening the depth in his eyes. Koharu Utatane and Homura Mitokado sat on either side, brows slightly furrowed in their usual way, though their expressions carried a trace of relief.
"Well then," Hiruzen said, breaking the silence. His voice wasn't loud, but it landed clearly on everyone present. "Regarding the nomination for the Fourth Hokage, does anyone have a suitable candidate in mind?"
Even though everyone already knew the answer, the formalities still had to be observed.
The silence lasted only a few seconds. Koharu cleared her throat and looked at the two men before settling her gaze on Hiruzen.
"Hiruzen, since you've decided to step down, I assume you already have someone in mind for the nomination. Homura and I have discussed it. Given the current situation, the person who can stabilize the village, unite its strength, and has distinguished military achievements…"
She paused, choosing her words carefully. "Namikaze Minato is the only one who meets every requirement."
Homura adjusted his glasses and gave his own conclusion. "Minato was trained by Jiraiya. He's part of the Hokage's direct lineage. His performance in the Third War was outstanding. His strength and reputation are known to all, and the villagers deeply respect and support him."
He hesitated briefly, then added, "I have no objections either."
Hiruzen nodded slowly. His face showed little emotion, as if he were simply confirming something he had already known for a long time.
"Minato's abilities and accomplishments are clear to everyone. His succession as Fourth Hokage is the will of the people and the key to Konoha's future."
He tapped the table lightly with his pipe. "If there are no other nominations, then the candidate for Fourth Hokage will be Namikaze Minato alone."
No one spoke. The only sound in the room was the faint crackle of burning tobacco.
Koharu and Homura exchanged a glance, then both remained silent.
This nomination wasn't really a discussion. It was a declaration.
They had both seen the work Hiruzen had been doing lately. He had practically been preparing the village for Minato's ascension every single day. Neither of them had any intention of opposing it now.
The very next morning, a mission scroll was delivered to Taiichi.
At Konoha Hospital, Taiichi had just finished dealing with a stack of urgent documents when an ANBU operative appeared silently at his office window, placed the scroll on his desk, and vanished like a shadow.
He unrolled it. The mission was straightforward: Effective immediately, jonin Matsushita Taiichi would lead a team of ANBU to escort former Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi to the capital.
Classification: Top Secret.
"Escort the Third to the capital?"
Taiichi raised an eyebrow, eyes lingering on the words "Top Secret."
He understood the usual process for a Hokage's succession. Normally, something this symbolic only required sending a high-ranking representative—someone like Jiraiya or one of the advisors—with official documents to the Daimyo's court for formal approval. The Daimyo's consent was largely ceremonial.
Ever since the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, had established the "One Country, One Village" system with the Daimyo, the right to appoint the leader of a shinobi village had remained firmly in the village's own hands. The Daimyo wouldn't dare reject the united will of Konoha's leadership unless he wanted to test whether his personal guard could withstand Konoha's fury.
Sending the Third Hokage himself for this? The scale felt excessive.
Taiichi's fingers tapped lightly on the desk as a trace of suspicion crossed his mind.
When something feels off, there's usually a reason.
Still, he didn't dwell on it. Instead, the corner of his mouth curved into a playful smile.
The reason was simple—Tsunade had been getting more and more shameless lately.
Ever since Taiichi returned from the Roran mission, Tsunade had completely let herself go. Hospital affairs, academy teaching, even high-level budget approvals—she had been dumping everything on him. She called it "training his abilities," but it was really just late-stage laziness so she could drink and gamble in peace.
"Perfect timing," Taiichi muttered, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "It's about time sensei got to experience the joy of being buried under a mountain of paperwork again."
He stood up and quickly sorted through the most urgent, most troublesome documents on his desk—ones that required heavy data verification and cross-department coordination—and stacked them into a thick pile.
Then he strode toward Tsunade's director's office.
The door wasn't locked. When he pushed it open, a faint smell of alcohol mixed with disinfectant hit him.
Tsunade was sprawled ungracefully in her large office chair, feet propped on the desk, idly rolling a die between her fingers while squinting at the bright sunlight outside. An empty sake cup sat on the otherwise spotless desk.
Taiichi's arrival made her scramble to look presentable. She still had some pride, after all.
"Taiichi, you're here early today," she said with an awkward laugh, quickly tucking the sake cup and die into a drawer.
Taiichi pretended not to notice.
"Sensei."
His voice carried just the right amount of respect as he placed the thick stack of documents on her clean desk with a solid thud, instantly forming an oppressive little mountain.
"The Hokage has given me an urgent mission. I'll be leaving the village for several days. These are the emergency tasks that must be handled today. I'll have to trouble you with them."
Tsunade's smile froze. Her eyes slowly moved from the pile of documents to Taiichi's face. Her elegant brows gradually rose.
"You little bastard—!"
"The mission is urgent. I can't delay. This student takes his leave!"
Taiichi didn't give her a chance to explode. He spoke quickly, bowed, and turned to leave in one smooth motion.
He left Tsunade staring at the sudden "mountain of documents" on her desk, then at Taiichi's disappearing back. Her entire body began to tremble.
"That old man! And that little bastard Taiichi! They're ganging up on me!"
Outside Konoha's main gate, the morning mist had not yet fully cleared.
Hiruzen wore his formal Hokage robes and hat, fully embodying the dignity of his position. Four ANBU operatives with steady auras stood beside him, their masked eyes sharp as they scanned the surroundings. These were clearly elite among elites.
Taiichi approached quickly, dressed in standard Konoha combat gear, a bright smile on his face.
"Hokage-sama, the escort team is assembled and ready to depart at any time."
Hiruzen nodded, looking at Taiichi's smile with a meaningful expression of his own.
"Let's go."
He took the lead, walking toward the official road that led to the capital. His steps were steady yet carried an agility that belied his age.
Taiichi and the ANBU spread out in a protective formation. The group of six quickly disappeared down the road.
The journey was long and mostly silent. Hiruzen spoke even less than usual. Most of the time he simply walked in quiet contemplation, his gaze calm as he looked toward the distant horizon, as if pondering something of great importance.
Taiichi remained quiet as well. His sharp perception spread outward like an invisible web, constantly alert for any unusual chakra fluctuations or potential threats.
On either side of the road stretched the fertile plains of the Land of Fire. Lush rice paddies and peaceful villages showed no signs of the war's destruction. This peace was exactly what Konoha had fought for.
Two days later, the majestic capital of the Land of Fire finally appeared in view.
Towering walls and countless pavilions spoke of the prosperity and weight of the continent's most powerful nation.
Thanks to Hiruzen's status as former Hokage, the group passed through without any inspection and headed straight for the heavily guarded Daimyo's palace at the center of the city.
The audience hall of the Daimyo's palace was resplendent with gold and jade.
The Fire Daimyo sat on the main seat in luxurious robes, wearing a polite, practiced smile. His eyes, however, carried a trace of distance and subtle wariness toward shinobi.
"You've come a long way, Hokage. It must have been tiring." The Daimyo inclined his head slightly, his voice carrying the natural arrogance of someone in power. "I have already reviewed the documents regarding Konoha's nomination of Namikaze Minato as the Fourth Hokage.
Minato has turned the tide on the battlefield and his reputation spreads far and wide. He is truly a pillar of talent. Having such a hero succeed as Hokage is a blessing for the Land of Fire.
I fully approve and confirm this nomination."
He waved his hand. A servant immediately stepped forward respectfully, holding a formal document bearing the Fire Daimyo's official seal, and presented it to Hiruzen.
The entire process was smooth and efficient, carrying just a hint of mutual understanding and formality.
The Daimyo clearly understood that this so-called "confirmation" was little more than going through the motions—giving both sides a dignified exit. He was happy to play along and maintain surface harmony.
Hiruzen accepted the document with both hands and said solemnly, "Thank you for your trust and support, Daimyo. Minato will not betray that trust. He will continue to protect Konoha and the peace of the Land of Fire."
It seemed the official business was concluded. The atmosphere in the hall relaxed. The Daimyo picked up his teacup, preparing to exchange a few pleasantries before sending them off.
However, Hiruzen did not rise to leave. He put the document away and looked calmly at the Daimyo, changing the subject.
"Daimyo, there is one more matter I must request your assistance with."
The Daimyo's hand paused slightly as he held his teacup, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes. "Oh? Please speak, Hokage."
"I have long heard that the Daimyo's library contains the oldest and most complete collection of historical texts in the Land of Fire and across the continent. Many of them are rare or unique volumes."
Hiruzen's tone was sincere, almost scholarly. "I would like to examine some of the materials. Would you allow me access to the library for a short time? Half a day would be sufficient."
"Consult the ancient archives?"
The Daimyo's surprise deepened.
He had assumed the former Hokage had come in person to request something practical—military funding or supplies. He hadn't expected something so… cultured.
He studied Hiruzen suspiciously, trying to read something from his calm face, but saw only sincerity.
"This…" The Daimyo hesitated.
The Daimyo's library was indeed vast, containing countless rare books and even some scrolls that touched on ancient secrets of the shinobi world. But these weren't things shinobi usually cared about. And the man only wanted to read, not take anything away. It seemed…
Harmless.
"Since it is the Hokage's request, I see no reason to refuse."
After weighing it for a moment, the Daimyo smiled again, appearing quite magnanimous. "You are a pillar of the nation. Your interest in ancient texts is a refined pursuit. I will make the arrangements immediately."
He turned to a steady, middle-aged official standing nearby and ordered, "Take the Hokage to the library. He may read any scroll in the collection except those in the core restricted section. Make sure all his needs are met."
"Thank you for your generosity, Daimyo." Hiruzen bowed slightly.
Taiichi's earlier suspicion suddenly became crystal clear.
So that's it.
This was the real reason the Third had come in person. Confirming the Fourth Hokage's appointment was just a side task.
What he truly wanted was access to the Daimyo's ancient archives—records that might contain even the faintest traces of the Otsutsuki clan.
Those scattered fragments buried in history might be the key pieces needed to understand the threat from beyond this world.
This matter was far too important. It concerned the survival of the entire shinobi world. The fewer people who knew about it, the better.
Under the official's guidance, Hiruzen walked deeper into the Daimyo's palace toward the quiet, ancient library.
Taiichi and two ANBU were politely escorted to a side hall to wait.
The side hall was elegantly decorated with tea and refreshments prepared, but Taiichi's mind was elsewhere.
He closed his eyes and raised his perception to its peak, spreading it outward like invisible tendrils, carefully monitoring the direction of the library.
He wasn't trying to spy on the contents. He was ensuring Hiruzen's absolute safety and watching for any suspicious observers.
Inside the library, light filtered through high windows, casting mottled beams across dusty bookshelves and ancient scrolls. The air carried the distinctive scent of old paper, ink, and aged wood.
The official respectfully led Hiruzen to a section dedicated to ancient historical records.
"Hokage-sama, most of the texts and scrolls you're looking for are in this area. Some scattered records may be mixed in with local chronicles or old family documents. You'll need to search those yourself."
The official gestured toward several towering bookshelves.
"Thank you for your trouble."
Hiruzen nodded. His gaze had already sharpened like a hawk as it swept across the yellowed and sometimes damaged scroll labels.
He said nothing more. He walked straight to one of the shelves, carefully pulled out an ancient scroll made of special animal hide with frayed edges, untied the cord, and began reading intently by the light from the window.
His fingers moved slowly across the difficult, ancient characters. Sometimes he paused. Sometimes he skimmed quickly. His brows furrowed at times, then relaxed. He was completely immersed in the secrets buried by time.
Time passed in silence. The official stood at a respectful distance, eyes lowered, remaining perfectly quiet.
The only sound in the library was the faint rustling of turning pages.
"—Kaguya—descended—chakra origin—God Tree—"
"—visitors from beyond—heavenly—fruit—"
"—six paths—descendants—Otsutsuki—shinobi—"
"—seal—slumber—threat—"
