It had been a week since that tense conversation between Luca and Lila. A week of stolen kisses, whispered calls, and moments of warmth shadowed by the heaviness of Luca's father. Lila carried the glow of their love, but beneath it was the quiet ache of secrecy. Luca, meanwhile, carried the burden of protecting her, even if it meant lying to those closest to him.
And now, Luca found himself sitting across from Jake Langfole, his childhood friend, Kate's brother, and the son of Charles Langford, the tech mogul who had been his father's oldest friend.
Jake had been away for months, traveling after his family's long vacation, the same vacation where Luca and Lila had first met. Now, back in town, he leaned back in his chair, his boyish face masking the sharpness in his words.
"Mate," Jake began, swirling his drink, "you wouldn't believe the chaos back home. My dad's furious with Kate. Says she keeps making stupid mistakes. He's had enough. He wants me to handle the business here, while Kate runs the one closer to him in Japan. That's where he's been most of the time."
Luca nodded, unsurprised. Charles Langford had always been a force, brilliant, ruthless, and unyielding. Yet Luca respected him more than his own father. Charles had been a father figure in ways his own never was.
Jake smirked. "And Vanessa my stepmum she's still at it. Keeps introducing me to different ladies. I swear, if I wasn't careful, one of them would've trapped me already. Lucky none of them got pregnant. Slept with all, though."
Luca raised a brow, but he wasn't shocked. Jake's innocent baby face had always been deceiving. Behind it was a player who thrived on flings, never relationships.
"You haven't changed," Luca said dryly.
Jake laughed. "And you have? Don't tell me you've gone soft."
The conversation shifted. Luca, tired from the weight of his father's visit, let something slip.
"My father came to the office last week. Ruthless as ever. But… because of Lila, I was able to calm down."
The words hung in the air. Jake's eyes narrowed, his playful grin fading.
"Lila?" he asked slowly. "Why was she able to calm you down?"
Luca stiffened. He hadn't told anyone he knew would be able to tell his father about Lila, not his mother, not Jessi, not Jake. He had avoided it, knowing that if word reached his father, everything would unravel.
Jake leaned forward. "Bro, it's me. Trust me. I'll never tell."
Luca hesitated. He remembered their childhood. Jake, with his innocent face, had always been terrible at keeping secrets. Luca had taken the blame more times than he could count, while Jake walked away untouched.
The memory burned. He couldn't risk it now.
"It's nothing deep," Luca said finally, forcing a casual tone. "She's my friend. After the meeting with my dad, I ran into her at a party. We talked, that's all."
Jake studied him for a long moment, then leaned back, smirking. "If you say so."
But Luca knew that look. Jake didn't believe him.
Far away, in London, a woman of elegance and poise sat in her luxurious apartment. Jessi Elion, Luca's elder sister, held her phone to her ear.
"Mom, I'm not sure I'll be able to make it to the dinner next week. Work here is a lot," she said, her voice clipped but soft.
On the other end, Celeste Elion graceful, patient, and strong replied firmly. "No, dear. You have to. It's your father's birthday, and you haven't been home for years. Not since you got married."
Jessi's lips tightened. "Whose fault is that?"
"Stop," Celeste said gently. "It's all in the past. Now you must come. Your father and brother miss you."
Jessi sighed, her voice softening. "Fine. I'll come. But only because of Luca. I miss my baby brother a bit."
The conversation shifted, mother and daughter slipping into softer tones, reminiscing, laughing, and sharing the warmth that Luca so often craved.
That evening, Luca and Lila stepped out together. Their date was quiet, romantic, filled with laughter and stolen touches. At the restaurant, Luca had booked a private table and the whole restaurant, shielding them from prying eyes. They shared wine, whispered dreams, and kissed softly before leaving.
Outside, Luca opened the car door for Lila, his hand brushing hers, his eyes lingering on her face. She smiled, shy and glowing, stepping inside.
But behind them, parked in the shadows, was a car with tinted windows. Inside sat Jake.
Jake hadn't believed Luca's story. After their meeting, he had asked one of his men to follow Luca. The report had come quickly: Luca had booked a romantic dinner at a high-end restaurant. A photo followed Luca and Lila sharing a kiss before she entered the car.
Jake had driven there himself, needing to see it with his own eyes. And now, he watched from the shadows as Luca leaned close to Lila, his every gesture screaming intimacy.
Jake's jaw tightened. He snapped a few photos, the camera capturing Luca's hand on Lila's waist, the kiss, the smile. Proof.
He didn't confront them. He didn't call Luca out. He simply drove away, the photos tucked safely in his phone.
But the suspicion lingered. Jake knew now. Luca wasn't telling the truth. Lila wasn't just a friend.
As Jake's car disappeared into the night, Luca and Lila drove away, blissfully unaware. Their laughter filled the car, their hands intertwined.
But in the shadows, secrets were forming. Jake had proof. He had photos. And though he said nothing, the silence was louder than words.
The question now was not if Luca's secret would be exposed, but when.
