"I just... lost my appetite," she murmured, leaning back. "I'm craving something else, I think. My stomach feels a bit heavy."
Max swallowed, his eyes lighting up with a sudden, boyish spark. He set his fork down, leaning across the table with a grin that reached his ears. "Hmm. So, would you like to go to the hospital, or should I call over Doctor Simon?"
Ruby blinked, confused by the sudden change in his tone. "Why? I told you, I feel fine. Just a bit tired."
"I could just get a test kit from the pharmacy," Max said, his voice dropping to a hopeful whisper. "You could do the test here at home if you want. It's more private that way."
"Max, what are you talking about?" Ruby asked, her heart starting to pound against her ribs.
"Your cycle is late, Ruby. And you're glowing. Maybe... just maybe..." Max leaned back, a long, triumphant smile spreading across his face. He looked like a man who had just won the greatest prize of his life.
