Max's house stood silent when she arrived. Cold. Like the man inside it. Violet stepped out of her car slowly, her usual confidence replaced with something unfamiliar. Unease. Because she wasn't walking into a negotiation. She was walking into the aftermath of a man who had lost everything.
And had nothing left to protect him from becoming something else. Something far worse. She walked up to the door. Paused. Then knocked. And waited. For the man she had just made an enemy of…To decide her fate.
There was no answer. Violet stood at the door for a long second, her hand still hovering where she had knocked. The silence on the other side wasn't normal, it was heavy… suffocating.
