Chapter 141 - Two halves of something whole

The village had learned to breathe with them.

Not all at once, no, nothing here happened all at once. It came slowly, like the tide rolling in at dusk, cautious and patient. At first, they had watched from a distance, curious eyes peeking from behind woven doors and half-drawn curtains. But time, steady and unhurried, softened suspicion into acceptance.

Now, months later, Ruby and Maxwell belonged in a way that felt both real… and strangely fragile.

The mornings always began with sound.

Roosters cutting through the pale light. The rhythmic scrape of brooms against packed earth. Women's laughter floated lightly in the air like smoke. And somewhere in the distance, the sea…always the sea…breathing in and out, as if it knew something the rest of them did not.
