Then she grabbed a towel and dried her hands carefully. Too carefully. The mirror above the sink caught her reflection.
Ruby paused. Just for a second. Her eyes narrowed slightly. Something about her own face felt… unfamiliar in a way that unsettled her more than she could admit.
Not wrong. Just incomplete. Like a picture missing its beginning. Something is off, she thought. The thought came sharply. Cleanly. And it frightened her a little. Because she couldn't explain why she thought it.
She stepped back into the room slowly. Nathan was still lying down, breathing unevenly but calmer now that the pain had begun to settle.
Ethan sat quietly at the edge of the bed, swinging his legs. Maxwell stood near the center of the room, watching Ruby as she returned.
"Are you okay, Amy?" he asked again. Careful. Measured. As always. Ruby forced a small smile. "Yes," she said after a beat. "I think the trip is just making me dizzy."
