Chapter 113 - Chapter 110: Symbol of Fear

Panic exploded in the stands.

A hundred thousand people, packed into a stadium with ten monsters standing in the middle of it.

The screaming started in the sections closest to the crater, where chunks of concrete had landed. Parents grabbed their children, couples pulled each other toward the exits, old men and women who had come to watch a school tournament found themselves stumbling up stairs they could barely climb, pushed by the tide of bodies behind them.

The exits weren't wide enough. They were never wide enough. Stadium architecture was designed for gradual dispersal, not mass evacuation. Bottlenecks formed at every tunnel entrance, as people tripped and fell.

A child was separated from her mother in the rush. She stood in the middle of the aisle, four years old, crying, her tiny hands reaching for a woman she could no longer see in the sea of bodies pushing past her.

A teenager scooped her up without breaking stride and carried her toward the exit.

This was what villains did. They didn't just hurt the people they attacked. They hurt everyone around them. They were like a virus, and the virus needs to be killed.

In the commentary booth, Present Mic had switched from entertainer to emergency coordinator in an instant. His voice, the same voice that had been screaming about railguns and phoenixes minutes ago, now boomed across the stadium with authority and calm.

"EVERYONE REMAIN AS ORDERLY AS POSSIBLE!! PROCEED TO THE NEAREST EXIT!! HEROES DO YOU JOB!"

Aizawa was already gone.

On the arena floor, the ten Nomus stood motionless in their crater, heads tilted at wrong angles, empty eyes scanning the stadium looking for targets.

Then the signal came.

One of them moved. The largest of the group, which was a three-metre behemoth with four arms, turned toward the eastern stands, where the crowd was thickest, and began to run.

Just then, the heroes arrived.

"LACQUERED CHAIN PRISON!!"

Wooden tendrils exploded from the arena floor, wrapping around the Nomu's legs, its arms, its torso. They tightened with crushing force, binding the creature in a cage of living wood.

Kamui Woods stood at the edge of the arena, his arms extended, wooden fibres pouring from his body like roots.

"You're not going anywhere!!!"

The Nomu roared. It flexed against the wooden prison. The tendrils groaned, cracked, but held.

A second Nomu broke from the group, charging toward the western stands with speed that something that large shouldn't have possessed.

But before it could do any damage, a shadow fell over it.

Mt. Lady, in her giant form, brought her foot down on the charging Nomu like a human flyswatter.

BOOM.

The impact cratered the arena floor, as the Nomu was driven into the ground, pinned beneath a foot that weighed several tons.

"STAY DOWN!!" Mt. Lady yelled from above, her voice echoing across the stadium.

The Nomu didn't stay down. It grabbed her ankle with both hands and pushed. Mt. Lady stumbled, her enormous body swaying, and the Nomu crawled out from under her foot, its body already regenerating from the impact.

Death Arms was there before it could stand. The muscular hero grabbed the Nomu by the face, lifted it off the ground, and slammed it back down with enough force to crack the arena floor for a third time.

"Kamui! Bind this one too!!" Death Arms yelled, holding the creature down as it thrashed.

Three Nomus engaged. Seven remaining.

The pro heroes in the stands were mobilising. Cementoss raised walls around the civilian sections, creating barriers between the crowd and the arena floor. Ectoplasm split into dozens of clones, each one guiding groups of civilians toward exits. Snipe had taken a position in the upper stands, his revolvers drawn, firing suppression rounds at any Nomu that moved toward the crowd.

But there were too many.

Two Nomus broke north, heading for the tunnel entrances where civilians were bottlenecked. Another went south, climbing the arena wall with its clawed hands, heading for the upper stands. Two more stayed in the centre, flanking Muscular like bodyguards.

And then Endeavor arrived.

The Number Two Hero dropped from the VIP level like a meteor. His flames erupted to full intensity.

He landed in front of the Nomu climbing the arena wall and drove his fist into its face. The impact, combined with the point-blank explosion of flame, launched the creature off the wall and back into the arena floor. It hit the ground hard enough to bounce.

Endeavor didn't stop. He was on it before it landed, raining down fire-enhanced punches, each one detonating with enough heat to melt steel.

"FINALLY," he growled, his flames roaring. "Something I can hit."

In the VIP box, the glass shattered.

Something shot out.

A high-pitched shriek of a bird echoed through the field, making everyone pause for a moment.

It was neither human nor an animal. It was something in between, something ancient, something that made every person in the VIP box cover their ears and every Nomu on the field below flinch.

Akira, in his red phoenix form, tore across the sky above the stadium, a streak of crimson fire that left a trail of heat haze in its wake. The crowd below saw it pass overhead. The burning bird screamed and dove toward the centre of the arena, where Muscular stood among his Nomu bodyguards.

Muscular saw it coming. His Nomu eye tracked the phoenix's descent while his human eye lit up with the same joy that he had on that day.

He spread his arms wide. His muscle fibres expanded across his body, layers upon layers of dense tissue stacking on top of each other like biological armour.

"COME AT ME, YOU BRAT!!!!" Muscular screamed, laughing.

The phoenix didn't slow down.

It hit Muscular at full speed. Talons of compressed red fire closed around his torso, and the impact launched both of them off the arena floor. Akira, inside the phoenix construct, gripped Muscular with talons that burned through the first three layers of his muscle fibre armour on contact. He beat his wings once, twice, gaining altitude, carrying the screaming villain upward and over the stadium wall.

Then he threw him.

Muscular flew through the air like a doll, hurtling over the U.A. campus buildings, over the training grounds, and into the jungle. He crashed through the canopy, snapping trees, carving a trench through the scorched earth before coming to a stop somewhere deep in the forest.

Akira flapped his wings once more and launched toward Muscular like a missile.

In the VIP box, the wind howled through the shattered window.

Momo stood at the broken window, her hands gripping the frame, staring in the direction he had gone.

"AKIRA!!" she screamed.

Just then, the door of the VIP box opened.

Nezu walked in as he looked at the shattered window, at the panicked faces of the people in the room, at Momo standing at the edge with tears forming in her eyes.

"He will not hear anything right now," Nezu said quietly.

Honoka closed her eyes. She understood what he meant, she knew nothing could stop him now.

"We need to get the civilians out. The Nomus on the field are being engaged by the pro heroes, but the crowd is still-"

A shadow passed over the window.

Everyone in the box looked up. A Nomu — one of the two that had broken north — had climbed the exterior of the stadium and was now perched on the roof directly above the VIP box. Its empty eyes stared down through the broken window.

Alas, before it could do anything, a blade hit it in the chest.

The impact knocked the Nomu off its trajectory. It slammed into the side of the building instead of through the window, its claws scraping against concrete as it tried to hold on.

Mei stood at the edge of the broken window, her right arm still extended from the throw. Her claymore had materialised in her left hand. A second blade, smaller, the one she had thrown, was embedded in the Nomu's sternum.

She was smirking at the thing.

"TRY NOT TO DIE TOO QUICKLY, YOU FREAKS!!!!!" Mei screamed, and launched herself through the window.

She hit the Nomu mid-fall. Her claymore came down in a two-handed overhead strike that split the creature's shoulder open from collarbone to ribcage. Pink energy crackled along the blade's edge, amplifying the cut beyond what physical force alone could achieve.

The Nomu screeched. It grabbed at her with both hands. Mei planted her foot on its chest, ripped her blade free, and kicked off, backflipping through the air and landing on the stadium rooftop.

The Nomu followed, crawling up after her, its wound already knitting shut.

"Oh, you regenerate?" Mei said, twirling her claymore. "Good. That means I get to cut you more than once."

She charged.

Back on the arena floor, the battle continued.

Kamui Woods was struggling with his Nomu. The creature had broken through two of his binding attempts and was now grappling with him directly, its four arms tearing at his wooden extensions. Mt. Lady had engaged a second Nomu in the southern section, using her size to keep it away from the civilian exits. Death Arms and Snipe were working together on a third, with Snipe's suppressive fire keeping it off balance while Death Arms delivered punishing blows.

Cementoss had sealed most of the civilian sections, but two Nomus had slipped through the gaps and were now loose in the lower stands, tearing through empty seats, looking for prey.

A group of civilians was huddled behind an overturned food stall. The father was shielding his children. The mother was on the phone, screaming for help.

The first Nomu reached the stall. It raised its massive fist.

"Freeze."

A wall of frost erupted between the Nomu and the family, six inches thick, floor to ceiling, appearing so fast that the Nomu's fist bounced off it before it could swing.

Shoto stood ten metres away, his right arm coated in ice, his breath coming out in white clouds. He had sprinted from the changing rooms the moment the explosion hit. His body was still exhausted from the battle royale. His quirk was running on fumes.

But he didn't care.

"Get them out of here," he said to the father through the ice wall. "NOW."

The family ran.

The Nomu punched through the ice wall. Todoroki was already building the next one.

BOOM.

The second Nomu in the stands was hit from behind by an explosion that sent it tumbling down three rows of seats. Bakugo landed on the railing above it, palms smoking, grin wide.

"OI!! UGLY!! OVER HERE!!"

The Nomu turned toward him. Bakugo launched himself at it, explosions firing from both hands, meeting the creature head-on in a clash that shattered every seat in a ten-metre radius.

From the eastern tunnel, Izuku pooped out.
