Chapter 111 - Not Begging for Favor, But Offering a Choice

The lamps in Yangxin Hall burned through the entire night.

The Emperor summoned no concubines.

He reviewed no memorials.

He was waiting.

When Qing Tian was called in, it was the first watch of the Hour of the Tiger.

She had changed out of her Director's attire.

Tonight, she wore the pale blue ceremonial robes of a consort.

Not extravagant.

But impeccably proper.

It was a deliberate choice.

Not weakness—

But a reminder that she stood in two identities at once.

The Emperor did not look up.

"We know what happened last night."

"You captured someone. But you did not report immediately."

Qing Tian knelt.

"This concubine is guilty."

Only then did he raise his eyes.

"Explain."

She did not defend herself.

Instead, she withdrew a thin memorial from her sleeve and offered it with both hands.

The Emperor took it.

Opened it.

On the first page, there were only four words:

"Register of Hostages."

The air in the hall shifted instantly.

His fingers stilled at the edge of the page.

He did not turn it.

"What are you trying to tell Us?"

Qing Tian's voice was steady.

"I ask Your Majesty to choose a path."

His eyes narrowed.

"Speak."

"The first path," she said calmly, "is to classify last night's incident as theft and corruption under palace regulations."

"The man is handed to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The case ends at the lowest level."

"The Buddhist Hall remains unsullied."

"Zhaohua Palace remains uninvolved."

"And I continue as a 'capable but restrained' Director."

She paused.

"It is the safest option."

The Emperor's gaze did not shift.

"And the second?"

Qing Tian inhaled slowly.

"The second path…"

Her voice lowered, but sharpened.

"Grant me permission, as a consort of the Inner Palace, to initiate a routine audit of palace affairs."

The Emperor's pupils contracted slightly.

A routine audit.

The most harmless-sounding authority in the harem.

And the sharpest blade.

"Do you understand what you are asking?"

He stood.

"If you take that step, this will no longer be about grain."

"You will drag the entire harem into it."

"Yes."

She bowed her head.

"That is why I dare not act without Your Majesty's decision."

The hall fell silent.

After a long while—

The Emperor laughed softly.

There was no warmth in it.

"You are clever."

"You use the 'rules of the harem' to force Us to declare a stance."

Qing Tian did not deny it.

"I only wish that blood would no longer be spilled where no one sees."

He walked toward her.

Stopped in front of her.

"If We choose the second path, how will you proceed?"

She had prepared this answer long before entering the hall.

"I will not touch the Buddhist Hall."

"I will not investigate Zhaohua Palace."

His brow lifted slightly.

"Oh?"

"I will begin with allocations."

"Food stipends. Oil stipends. Offering quotas."

"All resources listed under the Buddhist Hall's name but actually consumed by each palace."

"They will be recalculated."

"And each palace will prove its own innocence."

The Emperor stared at her.

Then, at last, a low chuckle escaped him.

"You intend to make them turn on one another."

"Yes."

She did not retreat from it.

"The harem thrives on conflict."

"If they are accustomed to using the lowest servants as hostages—"

"Then I wish them to taste it themselves."

He turned away and returned to the imperial desk.

Brush lifted.

"One last question."

He did not look back.

"Where do you want Us to stand?"

Qing Tian did not hesitate.

"Your Majesty need not stand on my side."

She knelt upright.

"I only ask that you stand on the side of truth."

The vermilion brush fell.

"Approved."

One word.

Heavy as thunder.

That very day—

An imperial edict was issued.

Its title was simple:

"Spring Routine Audit of Inner Palace Affairs."

No accusations.

No names.

No direct targets.

Yet every palace understood.

The wind had truly shifted.

And this time—

It was not about favor.

It was about reckoning.
