Richard and I stood in that position for a while and for a moment, it felt like he was trying hard to control himself. Last night's rejection should have made it clear that I wasn't interested in whatever he was offering. But when have alphas ever listened?
Before I could say anything, movement near the entrance pulled everyone's attention.
There was a sudden rush of guards moving into position.
Then I saw the king walking toward us.
I straightened immediately and bowed my head.
Richard did the same beside me.
The king stopped a few feet away and slowly looked around the hall.
His eyes moved over every table. His gaze basically scanned the entire hall. I wasn't sure if he was impressed or looking for what to criticize but I secretly prayed that it was the former.
For a second, he said nothing, and that somehow made me more nervous than if he had started criticizing everything.
Then he nodded once.
"Everything looks good."
