"I want more... let me have another taste..."
"There's no more, you've really squeezed me dry, you little glutton."
"I don't believe you, I'm going to try harder..."
A series of decadent sounds drifted from the laboratory bed; soon, the low moans became high-pitched and rhythmic. An hour later, silence finally returned.
Rize Kamishiro eventually confirmed that Kael was truly "empty" for the moment and fell into a satisfied, exhausted sleep. Her constitution was far inferior to Kael's, but her powerful regeneration allowed her to keep pace, driven by a desire that bordered on depravity. To put it nicely, she was liberating her nature; to put it bluntly, she was an addict. She couldn't control her appetite for flesh, and now, fueled by the nourishment Kael's blood provided, she had fallen into a different kind of obsession.
Kael didn't mind. In a world of fragile humans and cannibalistic monsters, Rize was one of the few who could withstand his "torque" without breaking. Her sinks into an inescapable state wasn't just lust—it was the biological ecstasy of every cell in her body being supercharged by his unique Rc cells. Even if he tried to drive her away now, she would likely refuse to leave.
A phone call pulled Kael out from under the covers.
"Hello?"
"Did you forget your promotion ceremony is this morning?" Mado Akira's calm, professional voice came through.
"You really are smart. It's great having you around," Kael said, offering a casual endearment to test the waters.
"Heh. I'll give you half an hour to get to the branch," Akira replied, immune to the smooth talk, and hung up.
Kael peeled Rize off him and, with Irimi Kaya's assistance, suited up in his new uniform. He was being exceptionally promoted to Investigator First Class. The CCG wanted to use him as a poster boy—a "pre-war" promotion to ensure he worked his life away in the coming conflict. Kael didn't care about the rank, but he was looking forward to Akira having to address him as her superior.
"Nothing's happened with Kaneki and the others, right?" Kael asked.
"Nothing. The Manager has temporarily closed Anteiku," Irimi replied.
Kael nodded. The Aogiri Tree would be hitting Ward 20 soon looking for Rize. Rather than waiting for them to knock, Kael planned to use his fists to "negotiate" an alliance that could benefit his research.
The door of the Anteiku cafe was kicked open with brutal force. Yakumo Oomori (Jason) burst in, followed by Nico. Looking at the empty shop, Jason's expression turned feral.
"They ran away. Someone tipped them off," Jason growled, kicking a crater into the wall. He had failed the organization's mission to capture Rize once again. With the CCG launching a major operation, he was forced to shift his focus to combat duties, leaving his grudge for another day.
Standing in the distance, Kirishima Ayato watched them leave, breathing a sigh of relief. He had been waiting nearby, fearing his sister Touka might be in danger. Seeing the shop empty meant she was safe—though not knowing where she had gone left him with a lingering melancholy.
Inside the CCG temporary headquarters, the atmosphere was solemn. The simple promotion ceremony for Kael had concluded, and the focus shifted to the Aogiri Tree.
Kael, now a First Class Investigator, sat through the briefing, secretly playing Minesweeper on his terminal. Listening to tactical drivel wasn't as stimulating as observing Akira's legs. Nearby, the "problem youth" Juuzou Suzuya was equally bored, staring at the ceiling. Suzuya was a junior of Kael's and a former classmate of the Yasuhisa twins, though his isolation at the Academy meant they had rarely spoken.
"Congratulations, Kael. Breaking Amon's record for the youngest First Class," Mado Kureo said, approaching with a look of genuine appreciation.
"Senior Mado, Akira deserves the credit for the intel," Kael deflected. In the CCG, however, raw combat power always outweighed strategy in the eyes of the brass.
Kureo took Kael to the armory to issue his new S-Rank Quinque. It was a Koukaku type, a straight, heavy blade designed for raw durability.
"Want to help me test it?" Kureo asked, his eyes squinting. He wanted to gauge Kael's strength, but he also had a "protective father" motive. He knew about Kael's reputation as a playboy at the Academy and wasn't about to let his daughter be another "notched trophy" without a fight.
A moment later, Mado Kureo limped out of the sparring room, clutching his lower back.
"It's nothing... just strained a muscle," Kureo grunted, forcing a brave face as Amon rushed to support him. He had tried to teach Kael a lesson but had been the one schooled instead. Fortunately, he'd managed to hide the embarrassment from Akira—or so he thought.
"You seem happy," Kael noted, seeing the faint smirk on Akira's face as they headed to dinner.
"Is it that obvious?" she replied, regaining her composure.
The operational mission was now in Kael's hands: Targeting Jason.
Seeing Kael so relaxed as he ate, Akira found herself calming down as well. Even when Amon arrived, out of breath, with more emergency intel from a hospital-bound Kureo, Kael just waved him over.
"No rush, Amon. Eating is more important. Join us."
On the television, Mado Kureo (pre-injury recording) was giving a press interview, feeding the public false information about evacuations. The CCG was ready to strike. But they didn't know the Aogiri Tree was already waiting for them with open jaws.
