The Hunter Intel Network flagged the activity on April first—a date that made the alert feel like a particularly cruel joke.
Sullivan & Associates was moving again.
I'd been tracking their dormancy since Daniel's exile and the subsequent silence, noting the absence of new inquiries, new surveillance, new signs of the sophisticated intelligence operation that had manufactured our mole. Months of nothing had almost convinced me they'd lost interest.
I should have known better.
"Three new shell companies registered in Wyoming," Bela reported, spreading analysis across the operations center's main display. "Financial traces leading back to the same Cerberus Holdings structure we identified last year. And this—"
She highlighted a series of transactions. "Asset movements. Equipment purchases. Personnel positioning. This isn't reconnaissance anymore."
"What is it?"
"Preparation." Her voice carried the particular tension of someone who'd learned to recognize threats before they materialized. "They're building toward something. Deployment patterns suggest they're preparing for direct action."
Jenny arrived as we were reviewing the data, her expression carrying the wariness that had become her default state since the angel revelations. "I heard. How bad?"
"Unknown. They've been dormant for months—long enough that I started to hope they'd lost interest." I studied the deployment patterns Bela had identified. "That hope was premature."
"Target analysis?"
"Peripheral territories. The Oregon packs we recruited. The Midwest ghoul families." I traced the probable angles of approach. "They're not targeting Haven directly—not yet. They're mapping our expansion, identifying vulnerabilities."
"Reconnaissance through action," Jenny observed. "Test our responses, measure our capabilities, prepare for the main assault."
"That's my assessment."
The response was immediate. Security protocols elevated to maximum. Counter-surveillance measures deployed. Contingency plans activated for every peripheral territory, evacuation routes established, communication blackouts prepared.
The coalition had grown too fast—I'd known that, accepted the risk as necessary given the timeline pressures. Now that growth was being probed by someone sophisticated enough to have survived months of our own counter-intelligence efforts.
"Who are they?" Jenny asked the question that had plagued us since Daniel's confession. "We know the name—Sullivan & Associates—but that's just a cover. Who's actually behind this?"
"I don't know." The admission felt like failure. "The investigation traces lead to shell companies, to offshore holdings, to dead ends that suggest professional tradecraft. Someone with resources, organization, and specific interest in supernatural activity."
"Government?"
"Maybe. The sophistication suggests institutional backing. But no government agency we've identified has this kind of capability."
Bela pulled up additional data. "There's one more thing. The timing. They went dormant in September—right after we identified Daniel. They resurface now, six months later, with what appears to be an escalated approach."
"They were watching to see how we handled the compromise," I realized. "Evaluating our counter-intelligence. Learning our methods."
"And now they know enough to move to the next phase."
The implications settled over us like weight. Whatever Sullivan & Associates actually was, they'd been playing a longer game than we'd understood. Six months of observation, analysis, preparation—all leading to whatever came next.
"Options?" Jenny asked.
"Defense and investigation. We can't attack what we can't identify, but we can make ourselves harder targets while we work to expose them." I began outlining assignments. "Ruth runs counter-surveillance on the peripheral territories. Your wolves coordinate evacuation protocols. Edgar's people go to ground in unfamiliar locations—break their targeting data."
"And you?"
"I dig deeper. There has to be a trail we haven't found. Someone funding this operation, directing it, making decisions about targeting. I find them, and we know what we're actually facing."
The night that followed was long. I walked the Haven's perimeter three times, checking wards personally, looking for vulnerabilities I might have missed during less paranoid assessments. Jenny joined me on the third circuit, her enhanced senses probing shadows that mine couldn't fully penetrate.
"I don't like unknowns," she said as we passed the northern boundary.
"Neither do I."
"When I was Alpha before—before the fire, before everything—I always knew my enemies. Other packs, territorial disputes, the occasional hunter. Clear threats with clear motivations." She paused, testing the air with senses I didn't share. "This is different. Someone watching from shadows, moving pieces we can't see, preparing for something we can't predict."
"The coalition changes the game. We're bigger, more visible, more threatening to people who prefer monsters stay isolated and manageable."
"Is that what they want? Keep us isolated?"
"Maybe. Or maybe they want something else entirely." I checked another ward junction, finding the energy stable. "The truth is, I don't know what they want. And that's the most dangerous part."
We completed the circuit in silence. The Haven's wards held strong—Sullivan witch magic layered over my own territorial claiming, reinforced by months of careful enhancement. Whatever Sullivan & Associates was planning, they'd find the Haven a harder target than they might expect.
But the peripheral territories weren't as protected. The new alliances, the expanded membership, the growth we'd pursued so aggressively—all of it created vulnerabilities that a sophisticated enemy could exploit.
Dawn came slowly. Somewhere beyond the mountains, someone was planning to destroy what I'd built. I intended to find them first.
But intentions weren't enough. I needed information. I needed to know who Sullivan & Associates really was.
The mystery had to end.
