The Second Day
On the second day, waking up had become a routine—but this time, something felt different.
For the first time in days, Kalin felt a sense of purpose. The job at the small shop, simple as it was, was his first real step toward independence.
But the world wouldn't make things easy. As he sat on the cold floor beside his sister, he couldn't stop thinking about everything they had lost… and everything they still had to fight for.
"Are you ready?" he asked his sister, who was rubbing her eyes and stretching.
"Yes," she replied quietly.
They had learned quickly that no one would give them anything for free. The world would remain harsh, but they had each other… and that was enough to keep them going.
Their First Day
Kalin arrived at the shop just before opening time, his heart beating faster than usual. It was a new beginning, but he wasn't sure it would be enough—would his heart find comfort here?
The shopkeeper, a middle-aged man with stern features, barely looked at Kalin as he entered.
"You're here," he said in a dry tone that gave nothing away. "Get to work."
Kalin wondered silently, Why is he acting this way with me?
At the same time, Kalin thought: If I work here, he'll take a part of my earnings… oh, God.
He took a deep breath and nodded. He had promised his sister that he would make this work.
He spent the day cleaning, arranging goods, and helping customers when needed. From time to time, the shopkeeper would throw harsh words at him, criticizing every move—but Kalin ignored them. He had no time for distractions.
Yet, the physical exhaustion was nothing compared to the mental toll. As the hours passed, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing… something more important than just a simple job.
By the end of the day, his muscles ached—but there was one thing he had gained: self-respect.
This is what my father taught me… everything I learned from him, he thought. Do I understand it all?
He had survived another day, and that was enough.
The Unexpected Visitor
Just as Kalin was about to leave, the doorbell chimed, and a man entered.
He was tall, well-dressed, and his presence commanded attention.
The shopkeeper greeted him politely.
"Good evening, Mr. Levens," he said, his tone suddenly softer.
Mr. Levens, a middle-aged man with sharp features, looked at Kalin with assessing eyes, as if weighing him carefully.
"You must be the new boy," he said in a smooth, deliberate voice.
"I've seen you around the city. You've been through a lot, haven't you?"
Kalin nodded, unsure of what to say.
"Tell me," Mr. Levens continued,
"are you looking for more than just a job?"
Kalin's eyes widened. Was this a job offer? Or something else?
"I'm offering you something… bigger," Mr. Levens said, his gaze sharp.
"Something that could change your life."
As Kalin prepared to leave, the bell rang again—it was not ordinary customers. Mr. Levens approached him.
Kalin whispered to himself, Do they really know me? Why is this man offering me something like this? I'm so nervous.
A shiver ran down his spine, as if something about this man was unusual.
Mr. Levens looked at him with piercing eyes, studying him in a way that made Kalin feel a chill run through him.
"You think this is just a simple job, don't you?" he said softly, cold and knowing.
Kalin looked up, startled by the sudden shift in tone.
"But I know who you are, Kalin," Mr. Levens continued, a faint smile on his lips.
"And I know what you're capable of. This is just the beginning… but beware…"
He leaned closer, locking eyes with Kalin.
"You're not the only one with power."
The words hung in the air, leaving Kalin stunned and confused.
As Mr. Levens turned and left the shop, Kalin stood frozen, unsure what to think… or what the mysterious man meant.
Kalin spoke to himself again, He knows everything… my name, my power? Something new. Did I inherit it, or is it just something from my past? And why are these knowledgeable people trying to learn about me, as if they know me already?
I'll explore it later… or should I let it linger in my mind?
