Chapter 77 - THE HEART OF THE ASCENDANT ENGINE

The Engine awakened.

Not by turning on, not by humming to life—

but by remembering itself.

Rings of light rotated around one another at impossible angles, forming a structure so vast and intricate that Aryan couldn't tell where it ended and where the space around it began. Every motion felt purposeful, precise, almost ceremonial.

The machinery wasn't metal.

It was conscious geometry.

Living equations.

Flowing runes.

Segments that shimmered from solid to liquid to pure radiance.

As the light shifted, Abhi whispered:

"…It's alive."

Astrael answered from somewhere behind them, voice bending through timelines:

"The Ascendant Engine predates life. It is what shapes the potential for life."

Ahan watched the rotating helixes and spirals.

"No beginning… no end…" he murmured.

"It's… recursive."

Vayrus stepped forward, his voice cold and exact:

"Correct. It is a perpetual self-generating construct. A fractal intelligence."

Mantrax added softly:

"It knows you. It has been watching since you entered your first trials."

Abhi stepped back.

"Uh… watching how? Watching what?"

A ring of golden energy drifted dangerously close to him.

His reflection inside it multiplied into dozens— each showing a different emotional state, a different version of him.

A whisper echoed through the chamber:

"FEAR."

Abhi flinched.

Another whisper:

"RESENTMENT."

His chest tightened.

Then another:

"HOPE."

Aryan growled and stepped between him and the ring.

The ring pulsed and drifted away.

Astrael nodded.

"The Engine analyzes the deepest tendencies of ascendants.

Your triumphs.

Your fragilities.

Your hidden fractures."

Ahan touched his own path.

It rippled like liquid stretching through time.

"And what does it do with that?"

His voice was calm but tight.

Vayrus answered:

"It judges whether you can withstand the path to the artifacts."

The entire chamber reshaped itself.

The Engine extended layers of itself, like a cosmic lotus blooming:

The outer layer — Rings of stilled circuits and etched runes rotating counterclockwise, humming with gravity-like pressure. Aryan felt his bones resonate with every spin.

The middle layer — A pulsing mesh of memory-light, shifting forms based on Abhi's emotional patterns.

The inner layer — A twisting lattice of paradox threads that kept rearranging into symbols Ahan recognized from his earlier visions.

Then the three layers overlapped visually, forming one impossible structure.

Aryan whispered:

"…This thing is a test."

Astrael:

"It is the test."

Mantrax stepped forward.

His body became translucent, showing thousands of silhouettes overlapping— echoes of himself.

He pointed toward the crystalline core.

"The artifacts were forged from the same principles that birthed the Engine."

The chamber dimmed except for the core, which shimmered like a star trapped in ice.

Vayrus spoke:

"Only those who can align body, emotion, and perception—

only those who can bridge instinct, identity, and reason—

can wield the artifacts without destroying the world."

Aryan clenched his fists.

"So that's why we were separated."

Ahan nodded.

"And this is why we come together now."

Abhi breathed out slowly.

"…Because if one of us fails— all of us fail."

Astrael smiled— a rare, unsettling expression.

"Precisely."

A tremor rolled through the chamber.

The Engine's rings spun faster—

Whispers layered into existence:

"COHESION."

"HARMONICITY."

"SYNCHRONY."

"ASCENSION."

The floor dissolved into a starfield.

Each of the trio rose into the air, suspended above their glowing pathways.

Their chests burned with their respective powers:

Aryan's silver aura sharpened

Abhi's blue echo spiraled around him

Ahan's golden paradox threads tangled like lightning

A voice — not the guardians, not a person — but the Engine itself — spoke inside their minds:

"ALIGN."

A violent pull yanked their energies toward each other.

Abhi screamed.

Ahan gritted his teeth.

Aryan tried to counter with brute force— and instantly backfired, thrown to his knees.

The Engine boomed:

"RESISTANCE DETECTED."

Ahan hissed, "Aryan, stop fighting it— it's pulling us into a shared frequency!"

Abhi's voice trembled.

"I can't— if I open too much it'll swallow me—"

Aryan staggered back to his feet.

"We have to synchronize.

Not overpower it.

Not out-think it.

Not out-feel it."

He looked at the others.

"We do this together.

Or we die separately."

A pause.

The Engine brightened.

"ASCENDANCY TEST — FIRST PHASE COMMENCING."

A massive ring lowered over them like a descending halo.

The trial had officially begun.
