What They Tried When the Name Failed

When the name stopped working, they stopped using words.

The first failure arrived as a mistake.

A bridge inspection marked complete when it was not.

A storage ledger balanced by rounding that erased a gap.

A signal relay tested without load.

Small errors.

Ordinary ones.

Cassian noticed the pattern at dusk, eyes fixed on a cluster of reports that did not quite align. "These are not accidents," he said quietly. "They are plausible."

Lucien leaned over his shoulder. "Planned to look human."

"Yes," Cassian replied. "And to fail at the edge."

I listened without stepping forward.

The basin had learned to work without my voice.

It did not need me to interrupt.

A runner arrived, breath tight. "North crossing is closed."

Lucien straightened. "Why."

"Inspection fault," the runner said. "They say the supports are compromised."

Cassian frowned. "Who says."

The runner hesitated. "A contractor. Stonecliff accredited."

Silence settled.
