When Replication Went Wrong

The first imitation did not fail loudly.

It failed quietly.

Cassian noticed the irregularity three days after the convocation. Reports from a distant territory began circulating through the shared documentation exchange. The structure looked familiar. The language echoed ours. The formatting even mirrored the ledger templates.

But something felt wrong.

"They are recording outcomes," Cassian said slowly, "without recording dissent."

Lucien frowned. "Meaning."

"They are documenting decisions," Cassian continued, "but not arguments."

I took the slate from him.

He was right.

Entries were clean. Efficient. Decisive.

Too clean.

Dispute resolved.

Allocation adjusted.

Authority clarified.

No record of debate.

No witness rotation.

No uncertainty logged.

The fifth presence stirred sharply.

"This," he said quietly, "is replication without friction."

"Yes," I replied.

Lucien's jaw tightened. "They copied the form."

"And removed the cost," I said.
