A Life Without Echo

There was a time when every decision carried consequence.

Now, most days carried nothing dramatic at all.

Morning came without urgency.

Light slipped through wooden shutters in thin, patient lines. No messengers waited outside. No reports required review. No debates echoed in distant chambers.

Just wind.

Just breath.

Just a life no longer intersecting history.

I had settled in a quiet settlement far from Stonecliff, far from the basin's disciplined hum. The people here did not discuss governance at dinner. They spoke about weather patterns, seed rotations, the way the river's flow had shifted slightly after last season's rain.

Transparency existed here too, of course. It was simply background like gravity.

No one marveled at it.

No one questioned it.

It functioned.

And because it functioned, it was invisible.

Invisibility used to be threat.

Now it was peace.
