Isolde drove the living hull until the ribs complained, and Shen Yuelan's white ship was already inside the hook's shadow when the black spars came up out of the haze. The boom was shut. Lashed spars. Men with hooks. The same fresh paint of the complaint, already scuffed where yesterday's bonus had started to look like a mistake. The crack in her gold ribs showed even from our deck, a dull seam that caught light wrong.
The thread sat on that seam and would not sit anywhere else.
"She is preaching," Elizabeth said.
She was. Not with a speech. With the hull. Every time the white ship rolled, the crack answered, a low note the closed boom had no law for. Men on the spars turned their heads as if someone had said their names from inside the wood. On the rib-yard a woman I recognized from the last visit, the one who had shouted that a closed hook was a dead hook, stood with her hands over her ears and still heard it.
