Chapter 52 - Chapter 52 – The Capital of Pressure

The trench thinned behind them.

Before Yan Shen and Kaelrin, the darkness began to brighten slowly at first, then in sweeping gradients of blue that painted the sea like rising dawn. The Azure Depth Legion moved as a single tide, gliding through currents shaped by their formation.

Except for one figure.

Yan Shen.

He did not swim.

He did not kick his legs. He did not push with his arms or with his Qi.

He simply moved, carving straight lines through the water as if his body ignored resistance entirely. Soldiers kept stealing glances his way, some subtle, most not.

Commander Leerin watched him the longest, his golden-core aura flickering unevenly.

"…He's not shifting the currents," Leerin muttered under his breath. "He is cleaving the water with his own body."

A Core Formation general whispered back, "I've never seen movement like that, not even from Golden Core elders…"

Yan Shen ignored all of it.

He was studying the glow ahead.

A soft blue radiance swelled across the water like luminescent fog, growing brighter and more intricate with each hundred meters.

Kaelrin slowed slightly, touching Yan Shen's arm to get his attention.

"We're close. Past that ridge lies the outer gate."

Yan Shen hummed once in acknowledgment, a deep vibration that traveled through water instead of resonating directly in his thoughts. Merfolk soldiers stiffened again.

"Why does he speak like that?"

"No resonance at all…"

"Does he not know how?"

"He's strong, but… defective?"

Kaelrin heard all of it.

His jaw clenched.

But Yan Shen remained perfectly calm.

The world ahead unfurled into sight.

A colossal ridge of sapphire coral rose from the ocean floor, forming a natural wall that stretched beyond vision in both directions. Embedded into the coral was a massive archway, fifty meters tall, glowing with runes carved into its surface.

Two guardians flanked the entrance.

Not statues.

Sentinels, massive serpentine creatures made of crystalized water, coiling slowly like living rivers. Their eyes glowed gold as the legion approached.

The runes ignited.

BOOM.

The entire ocean around the gate vibrated as if struck by the pulse of a massive drum.

The archway opened.

Not outward.

But inward, forming a sphere of shimmering light.

A breathable bubble.

Leerin gestured sharply.

"Inside. Quickly."

Kaelrin entered first.

Yan Shen followed.

The moment he crossed the threshold

Air.

His lungs expanded fully for the first time since they had dived.

He inhaled sharply, clean, crisp, tinged with salt and the faint scent of glowing flora, and exhaled through his nose with practiced ease.

Kaelrin froze beside him.

His mind jolted.

This... this is the first time he's taken a breath.

Since the surface.

Since before the trench.

Kaelrin swallowed.

He wasn't even using the air-stone I gave him…

Yan Shen stood comfortably, wiping a fleck of drying seawater from his eyebrow.

"You breathe again," Kaelrin said softly.

Yan Shen shrugged. "Didn't need to earlier."

Leerin overheard.

He stiffened.

"He didn't need..."

But Yan Shen had already moved ahead into the capital.

The Azure Depth Capital

It was a world in a bubble.

The bubble expanded into a vast, dome-like space, a hollow sphere carved into the coral ridge. Buildings grew from the ground in spiraling, wave-like shapes, glowing with soft oceanic light. Streets were paved with polished shellstone, shimmering beneath the soft illumination.

Coral-lanterns floated like drifting moons overhead.

People, merfolk adapted to bubble-air, walked or glided along pathways, some of their fins flattened into humanoid legs through their transformation arts.

Kaelrin led the way.

Yan Shen followed, calm, steady, eyes taking in everything.

Civilians paused as they noticed the procession.

Some bowed to Kaelrin.

Most stared at Yan Shen.

"…a surface dweller?"

"…why is he inside the Legion's formation?"

"…he's Qi-Gathering realm, look at his aura."

"…how does a Qi-Gatherng plankton walk with the legion?"

"…is he the prince's prisoner?"

"…or his toy?"

A mermaid child whispered loudly:

"Mom, why is he not swimming right? He looks broken."

Yan Shen gave her a single look, calm, flat.

The mother instantly covered her child's mouth and dragged her away.

Kaelrin cleared his throat. "Don't mind them."

"I don't," Yan Shen said simply.

Leerin carved his way to Kaelrin's side, keeping his voice low.

"Prince… the king will demand answers."

"I know," Kaelrin said.

"He will be displeased."

"I know."

Leerin hesitated.

"And Yan Shen… he is not allowed to enter the throne hall without your father's explicit command."

Kaelrin stopped walking.

"So command it."

Leerin's throat flexed.

"That is… not how it works."

Kaelrin's eyes narrowed.

"My father is king. I am his heir. That is exactly how it works."

The commander exhaled through his nose.

The third general whispered, "He's changed. The inheritance strengthened more than his cultivation…"

Yan Shen simply walked forward, examining a floating spiral-lantern. It drifted away from his touch as though afraid.

They entered the upper district.

Here, the structures were far grander, tall spires built from glassy coral, archways lined with bioluminescent threads, banners of deep blue silk drifting from tower tops.

The palace sat ahead:

A sprawling fortress grown from ancient coral, shaped like the jaws of a leviathan, its gates carved with tidal runes so old the symbols carried a hum of primordial weight.

The air around it trembled.

Even Yan Shen felt the pressure shift.

Kaelrin exhaled slowly.

"…Home."

Yan Shen glanced at him.

"Nervous?"

Kaelrin did not answer immediately.

After a moment

"Yes."

Yan Shen nodded.

"Then don't be."

Kaelrin blinked. "That… doesn't help."

"It's not supposed to."

Kaelrin stared at him, baffled.

Then laughed once under his breath.

"…Fine."

Two enormous guards barred the entrance, General-rank merfolk, both radiating late Core Formation strength. Their eyes locked onto Kaelrin.

"Prince Kaelrin," the left guard said, voice deep. "We welcome your return."

The right guard's gaze slid to Yan Shen.

"…This one cannot enter."

Kaelrin stepped forward instantly.

"He enters with me."

The guards stiffened.

"That is not permitted."

"It is now," Kaelrin said, voice steady, quiet, but filled with the authority of newly awakened bloodline.

The guards exchanged glances.

Kaelrin lifted his hand.

Water outside the bubble wriggled, then curved inwards slightly, responding to his will.

A faint shock rippled through nearby soldiers and generals.

"He… commands the currents already?"

"That's nearly impossible at his realm"

"The ancestral inheritance changed him…"

The left guard straightened.

"…Very well. By your authority."

The gates parted.

Yan Shen stepped forward.

The guards stepped back.

Every merfolk nearby watched the moment with silent disbelief.

A Qi-Gathering human walked into the palace of the Azure Depths unhindered.

Inside the Leviathan Halls

The interior was gigantic, pillars grown like colossal tree trunks, ceilings arched into sweeping crescents carved with swirling tidal motifs. Light-lilies floated near the ceiling, illuminating the palace with soft radiance.

Kaelrin and Yan Shen walked at the center of an escort of elite soldiers.

Whispers followed.

"…that human, his aura is so small."

"…but they treat him like an honored guest."

"…did he save the prince?"

"…or is he the reason the prince disappeared?"

Yan Shen heard all of it.

He didn't react.

Kaelrin heard all of it.

He reacted to one thing:

Yan Shen's silence.

Then leaned closer, speaking low.

"Doesn't any of that bother you?"

"No," Yan Shen said plainly.

"…Nothing bothers you, does it?"

"Waste of time."

Kaelrin opened his mouth, then closed it.

He couldn't decide if he admired Yan Shen… or worried for him.

At last they came to the final passage, long and dim, a long, echoing hallway of dark blue stone, where ancient runes pulsed faintly upon the walls, and the air itself seemed to listen.

Then Leerin struck the rune of summons.

BOOOOM.

A great sound rang forth, echoing through all the halls, vibrating the entire palace.

And from within came a voice, deep and ancient, filled with command:

"Send them in."

Leerin bowed low. "The king awaits."

Thus was the way opened.

And Yan Shen and Kaelrin went forward together, exchanging one final look, toward the throne, toward judgment, and toward the King of the Azure Depths.
