When he reached her, he didn't pause for danger or urgency.
He just ran the last few steps and threw himself toward her, his face lighting up like he'd found something he'd long given up hope for.
"Hannah!"
Billy was barely recognizable from the scrawny, trembling child they'd left at the sanctuary.
His cheeks were full, his shoulders broadened, and his hands hung loose instead of clenched in perpetual fear.
He stood straight, and his eyes held none of the hollow emptiness from the cult warehouses.
He skidded to a halt before her, breathless, voice bright with joy.
"I missed you so much! I watched the road every day. I really didn't think I would get to see you again."
Hannah knelt to meet his gaze, her chest softening.
"You look well. Far better than the last time we saw you."
