I don't know what I expected to see when I woke up, but it definitely wasn't my apartment.
It was in the same condition as I'd left it the last time— furniture torn and broken, everything on the floor. At least it smelled like nobody had been here in a while. Not the ECU and not other people.
I looked at Wayne, wanting to say thank you for everything she'd done, but the words weren't needed. She saw me. She understood, and I understood her thanks as well. Today, we'd both failed. Jane had escaped, and I hadn't been able to save Izzy. I'd tried for the last time. The part of me that wanted her back was dead because the Izzy that could have been my sister until the very end was long gone.
But we'd learned things on this day, and we were still alive. Who knew what tomorrow might bring?
"This is it," Bender said, stepping away from us. I was still the same way I'd been in Little Falls—sitting with Red's head on my lap. "It was nice knowing ya."
I nodded. "Indeed, it was."
