This kiss felt different again.
Not because it was deeper.
Not because it lasted longer.
But because neither of them seemed surprised anymore.
Elias had stopped freezing when Dominic kissed him.
Dominic had stopped testing whether Elias would pull away.
The hesitation that had defined their interactions for so long had quietly disappeared somewhere between the fourth and sixth kiss.
Now there was only closeness.
Dominic's hand rested firmly against Elias's waist, holding him there while their lips moved together slowly. It wasn't possessive. It wasn't forceful.
Just steady.
Certain.
When the kiss finally ended, Dominic didn't step back.
Neither did Elias.
Their faces remained close enough that their breaths still brushed against each other.
Dominic studied him carefully.
"You stopped counting."
Elias blinked.
"What?"
"The kisses."
"I was not counting."
"You were earlier."
"That was observational."
Dominic laughed softly.
"Sure it was."
Elias frowned slightly, though the reaction carried less resistance now.
Dominic tilted his head, watching him.
"You're not panicking."
"I never panic."
"You absolutely do."
Elias crossed his arms slightly.
"That's inaccurate."
Dominic smiled.
"You used to panic every time things got close to this."
"This?"
Dominic gestured lightly between them.
"Us."
Elias paused.
Dominic's voice softened.
"Tonight you didn't run."
Elias looked at him for a long moment.
"That might change."
Dominic chuckled.
"You're still leaving yourself an escape route."
"That's strategic thinking."
Dominic leaned closer again.
"You haven't used it."
Elias didn't answer.
Dominic watched his face carefully.
"You know what I think?"
"What?"
"I think you're realizing something."
Elias raised an eyebrow.
"And what would that be?"
Dominic smiled faintly.
"That maybe you didn't need to run in the first place."
Elias inhaled slowly.
"That conclusion is premature."
Dominic shook his head.
"You're still analyzing."
"That's how I function."
Dominic stepped closer again, closing the small space between them.
"You don't need to analyze this."
Elias felt the warmth of Dominic's body against his again.
"That's a dangerous statement."
Dominic's voice lowered slightly.
"Only if you're afraid of the answer."
Elias looked into his eyes.
"And what answer would that be?"
Dominic's hand moved slowly up Elias's side, resting lightly against his back now.
The movement sent a quiet spark through Elias's chest.
Dominic noticed immediately.
"That one," he said softly.
Elias exhaled.
"You're very aware of your effect on people."
"Not people."
Dominic smiled faintly.
"You."
Elias looked away briefly.
Dominic noticed.
His hand lifted gently, guiding Elias's chin back so their eyes met again.
"You keep trying to turn this into a logic problem."
"Because it is one."
Dominic shook his head.
"No."
His voice softened.
"It's a feeling."
Elias didn't respond.
Dominic studied him carefully.
"You really don't trust feelings, do you?"
"They're unreliable."
Dominic chuckled quietly.
"And yet here you are."
Elias frowned slightly.
"That's circumstantial."
Dominic laughed again.
"You're unbelievable."
But the warmth in his expression never disappeared.
Another quiet moment passed between them.
Dominic's thumb brushed lightly along Elias's back.
The touch was slow.
Absent-minded.
Almost affectionate.
Elias felt the small shiver again.
Dominic noticed.
"You're very responsive."
"That's not a scientific term."
"It should be."
Elias sighed.
"You're enjoying this."
"Very much."
Dominic leaned closer again, their foreheads nearly touching.
"You know what the strangest part is?"
"What?"
"You're not even trying to push me away anymore."
Elias hesitated.
Dominic smiled softly.
"You stopped doing that hours ago."
Elias glanced down briefly.
Dominic followed his gaze.
Their bodies were still pressed close together.
Elias hadn't created any distance at all.
Dominic chuckled quietly.
"See?"
Elias looked back up.
"That doesn't prove anything."
Dominic's voice dropped to a whisper.
"It proves you want me here."
Elias inhaled slowly.
"That's an interpretation."
Dominic leaned even closer.
Their noses brushed lightly now.
"You kissed me first earlier."
"Yes."
"You held my shirt."
"That was involuntary."
"You pulled me closer."
"That's debatable."
Dominic smiled.
"You're still doing it."
Elias blinked.
"What?"
Dominic glanced downward again.
Elias followed his gaze.
His hand was resting lightly against Dominic's chest now.
He hadn't even noticed when it moved there.
Dominic chuckled softly.
"Your instincts are winning."
Elias slowly withdrew his hand.
"That's… inconclusive."
Dominic laughed again.
"You are impossible."
But the amusement in his voice softened into something warmer.
Something quieter.
"You know what though?"
"What?"
"I like you exactly like this."
Elias raised an eyebrow.
"Confused?"
Dominic shook his head slightly.
"No."
His voice softened.
"Honest."
Elias looked at him carefully.
Dominic held his gaze.
No teasing.
No sarcasm.
Just sincerity.
Then Dominic leaned forward again.
But this time, before he kissed him
Elias did.
