They didn't move apart immediately.
That was the first thing Elias noticed.
Not the kiss itself he was already getting used to that in a way that both intrigued and unsettled him but what came after.
The staying.
Dominic didn't rush it.
Didn't pull away with a joke or a smirk.
He just… stayed close.
One hand still resting at Elias's waist, steady and warm, like it had found a place it didn't intend to leave.
Elias became aware of his own breathing again.
Slightly uneven.
Unusual.
He didn't correct it.
Dominic's thumb moved slowly against his side, absent, almost thoughtful.
"You're quiet," Dominic murmured.
Elias frowned slightly.
"That's not abnormal."
Dominic huffed a soft laugh.
"No. But this kind of quiet is."
Elias tilted his head.
"Clarify."
Dominic leaned back just enough to look at him properly.
"This isn't you thinking through something."
Elias held his gaze.
"It isn't."
Dominic watched him carefully.
"You're feeling it instead."
The word hung there.
Feeling.
Elias didn't respond immediately.
Because that… was harder to categorize.
"I am processing," he said finally.
Dominic smiled faintly.
"Of course you are."
Elias narrowed his eyes slightly.
"That is not inaccurate."
"I didn't say it was."
Dominic's hand shifted slightly higher along his side, slower now, deliberate but he watched Elias the entire time.
Waiting.
For resistance.
For hesitation.
Elias didn't give him either.
Dominic noticed.
"Still not stopping me."
"No."
"Why?"
Elias answered without looking away.
"Because I want you to continue."
Dominic exhaled quietly.
There it was again.
That directness.
Still new.
Still… affecting him more than he expected.
His hand stilled for a moment, like he was adjusting to the weight of those words.
"You keep saying things like that," Dominic murmured.
Elias raised an eyebrow.
"Would you prefer I didn't?"
Dominic shook his head quickly.
"No."
A pause.
"Don't stop."
Elias nodded once.
"Understood."
Dominic let out a quiet breath, something in his expression softening again.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The silence wasn't empty.
It was full of things they weren't saying.
Dominic broke it first.
"You haven't asked the obvious question yet."
Elias frowned slightly.
"That depends on what you consider obvious."
Dominic tilted his head.
"What are we doing?"
Elias blinked.
"That question has already been addressed."
"Not fully."
Elias studied him.
"We are engaging in a developing interpersonal connection."
Dominic stared at him.
Then laughed softly.
"You're unbelievable."
"That is not a refutation."
"No, it's not."
Dominic stepped closer again, eliminating the space that had started to form.
"I mean it," he said more quietly now.
"What are we actually doing?"
Elias didn't answer immediately this time.
Because this version of the question…
Wasn't about definition.
It was about intention.
And that required something he wasn't used to giving without analysis.
Honesty without structure.
Dominic watched him carefully.
"You're thinking again."
"Yes."
"Try not to."
"That is not efficient."
Dominic smiled faintly.
"Neither is this."
He shifted slightly closer, his voice dropping.
"But you're still here."
Elias inhaled slowly.
"That is correct."
Dominic's eyes held his.
"Then answer me."
Elias hesitated.
Then, slowly
"We are… choosing to continue this interaction."
Dominic raised an eyebrow.
"That's still a little… clinical."
Elias exhaled quietly.
Then tried again.
"We are… involved."
Dominic's expression changed slightly.
"Closer."
Elias frowned.
"That implies proximity, which is already established."
Dominic let out a quiet laugh.
"Emotionally, Elias."
Elias paused.
That… was harder.
He looked at Dominic again.
Really looked at him.
At the way he stayed.
At the way he didn't push, but didn't leave either.
At the way everything felt different when he was this close.
Elias exhaled slowly.
"We are not… temporary."
Dominic stilled.
That answer landed.
Harder than the others.
He didn't speak immediately.
Didn't joke.
Didn't deflect.
He just watched him.
"Say that again," Dominic said quietly.
Elias didn't hesitate this time.
"We are not temporary."
Dominic's hand tightened slightly at his waist.
Not enough to restrain him.
But enough to show it mattered.
"Okay," Dominic murmured.
"Okay."
There was something quieter in his voice now.
Something that hadn't been there before.
Relief.
Elias noticed.
"You find that acceptable."
Dominic let out a small breath of laughter.
"Yeah."
A pause.
"More than acceptable."
Elias nodded once.
"Then the current trajectory is sufficient."
Dominic smiled again, softer this time.
"You really can't help yourself, can you?"
"No."
Dominic leaned closer again.
And this time, when he kissed him
It wasn't slow.
It wasn't cautious.
It wasn't testing anything.
It was certain.
And Elias responded without hesitation.
No analysis.
No delay.
Just… response.
When they pulled apart, Dominic didn't move far.
"You realize," he murmured, "you're getting better at that."
Elias frowned slightly.
"At what?"
"Kissing me like you mean it."
Elias paused.
Then answered simply
"I do mean it."
Dominic smiled.
And this time
He didn't hide how much that affected him.
Behind them, the system remained silent.
Not because it had stopped observing
But because, for once…
There was nothing left to interpret.
