Chapter 165 - Chapter 158 — The Word That Changed Everything

Neither of them moved after that.

The word still lingered between them.

Love.

Not implied.

Not hidden beneath tension or jokes or careful deflections.

Said clearly.

Out loud.

Elias could still feel the impact of it moving through him, quiet but undeniable, like something inside him had shifted into a new position and could no longer go back.

Dominic watched him carefully.

Not nervous exactly.

But waiting.

And that alone told Elias how important this moment was.

"You're thinking again," Dominic said softly.

Elias looked at him.

"Yes."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"That's probably fair this time."

A small silence followed.

Then Dominic's expression softened slightly.

"You don't have to say it back."

Elias frowned.

"That implies expectation."

Dominic shrugged lightly.

"I'm trying not to pressure you."

Elias studied him carefully.

"Why?"

Dominic blinked.

"What do you mean, why?"

"You clearly intended the statement to communicate something significant."

Dominic laughed quietly under his breath.

"You really know how to make a confession sound clinical."

"That was not my intention."

"I know."

Dominic's smile faded into something gentler.

"I said it because it's true."

The honesty in his voice made Elias's chest tighten slightly.

Not painfully.

Just… intensely.

Dominic continued quietly

"You matter to me more than anyone else ever has."

Elias felt that immediately.

The weight of it.

The vulnerability inside it.

And suddenly

The idea of staying silent felt wrong.

Not because Dominic expected something.

But because Elias did not want him to misunderstand.

"I do not dislike the term," Elias said carefully.

Dominic blinked once.

Then laughed softly.

"Wow. That's romantic."

Elias frowned slightly.

"I am attempting clarity."

"I know."

Dominic looked at him warmly.

"And honestly? That sounded very you."

Elias paused.

Then added quieter

"I simply require precision before making permanent statements."

Dominic's expression softened even more.

"Yeah," he murmured.

"I figured."

A pause.

Then

"But you've been saying it in every other way already."

Elias went still.

Dominic held his gaze.

"You stay."

A beat.

"You trust me."

Another.

"You let me close even when it scares you."

His voice lowered slightly.

"You choose me over and over again."

Elias felt every word settle somewhere deep inside him.

Because they were true.

And the terrifying thing was

Dominic understood him well enough to see it.

"I do not understand how you interpret these things so easily," Elias admitted quietly.

Dominic smiled faintly.

"I don't."

Elias frowned slightly.

"You appear confident."

"I'm confident about you."

That answer came too fast to be rehearsed.

Too honest to dismiss.

Elias looked away briefly.

Not because he wanted distance.

Because he needed a second to process the feeling moving through him.

Dominic noticed immediately.

"You okay?"

Elias nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Processing."

Dominic laughed softly.

"Of course you are."

Elias glanced back at him.

"You are being unusually patient."

Dominic tilted his head slightly.

"You're worth being patient for."

That

That nearly unraveled him completely.

Elias exhaled slowly.

Then, quieter than before

"I believe I am beginning to understand the term."

Dominic's breath caught slightly.

"Yeah?"

Elias nodded once.

"Yes."

Dominic didn't speak.

Didn't interrupt.

He just waited.

Elias looked at him carefully.

At the steadiness in his eyes.

At the way he stayed close without forcing anything.

At the way being near him no longer felt disruptive.

It felt necessary.

And suddenly

The answer became obvious.

Not logical.

Not calculated.

Just true.

"When you left previously," Elias said slowly, "I experienced persistent cognitive disruption for approximately eleven months."

Dominic blinked.

"…That is the most Elias way you could possibly say you missed me."

Elias ignored that.

"I attempted to compensate through increased work output."

Dominic's expression softened immediately.

"That bad?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"I did not enjoy your absence."

Dominic smiled faintly.

"I know."

Elias's gaze held his.

"But now… your presence has become integrated into my sense of stability."

Dominic went completely still.

Elias continued quietly

"When I consider future projections, you are automatically included."

The room fell silent.

Heavy.

Warm.

Real.

Dominic looked at him like he'd forgotten how to breathe.

"You realize," he said softly, "that this is basically a love confession for you."

Elias frowned slightly.

"That was not the intended structure."

Dominic laughed quietly, almost helplessly.

"I know."

A pause.

"But it still counts."

Elias hesitated.

Then asked quietly

"Does it?"

Dominic stepped closer immediately.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

Just certainty.

Elias felt something loosen inside his chest at the answer.

Dominic's hand lifted slowly, resting lightly against the side of his face this time.

Different from before.

Softer.

More intimate.

"You don't have to say the exact word right now," Dominic murmured.

Elias looked at him carefully.

"But I think you already know."

Elias exhaled slowly.

Because

Yes.

He did.

Maybe not in the way other people experienced it.

Maybe not effortlessly.

Maybe not simply.

But real nonetheless.

And terrifyingly

Beautifully

Permanent.

Dominic leaned closer, resting his forehead gently against Elias's.

"You know what my favorite part is?" he whispered.

Elias's voice came quieter now too.

"What?"

Dominic smiled softly.

"You stopped trying to run from it."

Elias closed his eyes briefly.

Then answered honestly

"Yes."

For the first time in his life

There was something he wanted more than control.

And his name…

Was Dominic.
