The Last Moments of Vanthelos
Ryu moved.
Or at least he tried to.
"LUTO!"
The teleportation light had already reached his chest.
His legs were gone.
His hands were fading.
Yet he still threw himself forward.
Toward Caelren.
Toward Tikka.
Toward the impossible beam of divine light that had just split Vanthelos in half.
The old nomad watched him struggle.
For a moment—
His expression softened.
Not with regret.
Not with fear.
Something closer to peace.
The kind of peace only found after making a choice you can never take back.
"Go."
Ryu couldn't hear him.
The roaring trench drowned everything out.
Stone collapsed endlessly into the abyss below.
Entire mountains folded inward.
The world itself screamed.
Yet Caelren still mouthed the word.
Go.
The teleportation light climbed higher.
Ryu reached out desperately.
Then vanished.
Luto disappeared a fraction of a second later.
Silence followed.
At least for a moment.
Caelren continued staring at the space where they had been.
Then his eyes shifted downward.
To the circle.
To the fracture.
To the damage.
His expression darkened immediately.
"...No."
The teleportation array was cracked.
Not destroyed.
Tampered with.
The trench had passed too close.
Several of the location anchors had fractured during activation.
The destination had changed.
Only slightly.
But slightly was enough.
A circle designed to transport across dimensions could miss by entire worlds if even one anchor failed.
Caelren exhaled slowly.
"They aren't going where I sent them."
Tikka immediately looked up.
"What?"
The old nomad knelt beside the ruined circle.
Studying the damaged inscriptions.
Calculating.
Tracing.
Trying to determine the new trajectory.
Nothing.
Too much interference.
Too many variables.
Finally he stood.
"...They're off course."
"How far?"
"I don't know."
Tikka groaned dramatically.
"I knew it."
She folded her tiny arms.
"A portal wouldn't have cracked."
Caelren laughed.
A genuine laugh.
Small.
Brief.
But real.
Even now.
Even with Heaven descending.
Even with Vanthelos dying around them.
Tikka smiled.
Satisfied she had gotten at least one reaction.
"So?"
She tilted her head.
"You worried?"
Caelren looked toward the stars.
Toward wherever the brothers had been sent.
"...A little."
Tikka waited.
The old nomad smiled faintly.
"But Luto will figure it out."
She blinked.
"That's it?"
"He'll figure it out."
Tikka stared.
"You have significantly more faith in those children than I do."
Caelren chuckled.
"Luto is smarter than most scholars I've met."
"And Ryu?"
A pause.
The smile widened slightly.
"...Ryu has a talent for surviving situations he has absolutely no business surviving."
"That's not reassuring."
"It isn't supposed to be."
For a brief moment—
The destruction felt far away.
Just an old man and his oldest companion sharing one final laugh.
Then—
A voice echoed across Vanthelos.
The sky trembled.
The trench vibrated.
The stars themselves seemed to recoil.
It wasn't loud.
Not really.
The voice simply existed everywhere at once.
Curious.
Mocking.
Amused.
Like a child pulling wings off insects.
"My..."
The words rolled through reality.
"What an impressive little hiding place."
Tikka froze instantly.
Caelren's smile vanished.
The voice continued.
"I searched for quite some time."
"Entire civilizations rose and fell while you hid here."
A soft chuckle followed.
One filled with genuine delight.
"And yet..."
The pressure increased.
"...you endured."
The cliffs around them began cracking.
The air grew heavier.
Reality itself seemed unwilling to move.
Caelren slowly turned toward the trench.
His jaw tightened.
The voice spoke again.
This time with unmistakable amusement.
"You always were difficult to erase."
A pause.
Then—
The words that made Caelren's blood run cold.
"Tell me, unfinished draft..."
The world stopped.
Tikka looked up immediately.
Caelren didn't move.
Didn't breathe.
Didn't blink.
Because there was only one being in existence who used that phrase.
Only one being cruel enough.
Ancient enough.
Arrogant enough.
The old nomad closed his eyes.
Disgust.
Dread.
Hatred.
Ancient emotions stirred all at once.
Tikka slowly floated upward before settling onto his shoulder.
For the first time in centuries—
She looked afraid.
Caelren walked forward.
Past the ruined circle.
Past the shattered stone.
Past the remains of the world he had protected for ages.
Until he reached the edge of the trench.
The scar stretched beyond the horizon.
Visible even from space.
He stared upward.
Toward whatever waited beyond the broken sky.
Toward the presence descending upon Vanthelos.
And with a voice filled with equal parts dread and contempt—
He finally spoke the name.
"Sytherion."
Lightning flashed.
The heavens answered.
And something beyond the fractured sky smiled.
Lost Between Domains
The teleportation failed.
Not completely.
Just enough to be annoying.
Which somehow made it worse.
One moment—
Ryu and Luto were standing inside the teleportation circle.
The next—
They were falling.
Again.
Wind screamed past them.
Ryu stared upward at the rapidly disappearing circle.
Then looked down.
Then back up.
Then down again.
"...You know."
He crossed his arms while falling.
"We really need to stop arriving in places like this."
Luto's eye twitched.
"You're saying that NOW?"
The brothers continued plummeting through unfamiliar skies.
Below them stretched an enormous mountain range unlike anything they had seen before.
Jagged peaks rose from the earth like broken fangs.
Black stone cliffs pierced the clouds.
There were almost no trees.
No forests.
No signs of civilization.
Just endless ridges of stone stretching beyond the horizon.
The landscape looked ancient.
Untouched.
The sky itself seemed dimmer here.
Muted.
As if sunlight struggled to reach the ground.
Then Ryu spotted it.
"There!"
Far below.
Nestled within the valley between several towering peaks—
A massive body of glowing water shimmered beneath them.
Turquoise.
Silver.
Blue.
The entire lake radiated faint light into the surrounding darkness.
Ryu grinned.
"Found our landing!"
Before Luto could respond—
Ryu folded his arms against his chest and dove.
Straight toward it.
"Oh, come ON."
Luto immediately accelerated after him.
"You cannot just dive into unfamiliar glowing water!"
"You don't know what's in there!"
"Could be poison!"
"Could be acid!"
"Could be—"
SPLASH.
Ryu vanished beneath the surface.
Luto groaned.
Then followed.
SPLASH.
The illuminated lake swallowed them whole.
Several minutes later.
Two drenched brothers sat along the shore.
Both soaked.
Both exhausted.
Both staring into the distance.
The glowing lake rippled gently behind them.
Its waters were unusually dense.
Heavy with minerals and strange cosmic deposits carried down from the surrounding mountains.
Ryu buried his face in his hands.
"I'm tired of running."
Luto didn't answer.
Ryu continued anyway.
"We leave Terrosia."
"We run."
"We leave Raezhar."
"We run."
"We leave Veltraxis."
"We run."
"We leave Vanthelos."
He threw his hands into the air.
"WE RUN."
His voice echoed through the valley.
Luto sat quietly.
Listening.
Because he understood.
The countdown.
The execution.
Onyx.
Caelren.
The trench.
The smile.
Everything was hitting at once.
Ryu's voice softened.
"...What even caused that?"
Silence followed.
The image remained burned into both of their minds.
That beam.
That trench.
That impossible wound through Vanthelos.
Luto finally spoke.
"It wasn't something we could fight."
Ryu frowned.
"We don't know that."
"We do."
Luto's answer came instantly.
The certainty surprised even Ryu.
Luto stared toward the mountains.
"Whatever made that trench..."
A pause.
"...wasn't a fight you charge into."
His expression darkened.
"And for some reason..."
"...I think Onyx's execution."
"The Divine finding us."
"And Vanthelos."
"They're connected."
Ryu looked over.
"You think so too?"
Luto nodded.
Neither liked that answer.
Ryu kicked a rock into the glowing lake.
"...We didn't even get to thank them."
That one hurt.
More than either admitted.
Caelren.
Tikka.
The realization lingered.
Neither spoke for a while.
The wind drifted softly through the valley.
Then Luto noticed something.
His eyes narrowed.
"...Ryu."
"What?"
"Do you see those?"
Ryu blinked.
"See what?"
Luto pointed toward the mountainside.
Dozens.
Hundreds.
Perhaps thousands.
Animals.
Large mountain-dwelling creatures climbing effortlessly across impossible slopes.
They resembled the Ibex, a beast Luto read in a worn text once.
Their horns glowed.
Massive spiraling horns filled with the same turquoise luminescence as the lake.
The light pulsed softly through them.
Almost like veins.
The creatures moved gracefully between cliffs and ridges.
Luto stared.
"Those."
Ryu looked confused.
"...What those?"
Luto slowly turned.
Then froze.
"...Ryu."
"Hm?"
"...Don't move."
"Why?"
Luto pointed.
Directly beside him.
A single glowing ibex sat comfortably next to Ryu.
Its enormous horns shimmered brilliantly.
And it was currently licking his face.
Repeatedly.
Ryu burst into laughter.
"Hey buddy!"
The creature happily pushed its head into his chest.
Ryu immediately wrapped his arms around it.
The animal seemed delighted.
Luto stared.
"...How long has that been there?"
"No clue."
The creature licked Ryu again.
Ryu laughed harder.
Luto rubbed his forehead.
"You don't know if that's dangerous."
Ryu scratched beneath its glowing horns.
"Look at him."
The beast tilted its head.
"...How could this guy be dangerous?"
As if understanding the insult—
The creature slowly turned its head.
And stared directly at Luto.
Its glowing horns brightened.
Luto immediately stiffened.
"...I take it back."
The animal continued staring.
Judging him.
Ryu nearly fell over laughing.
Eventually Luto sighed.
Walked over.
And sat beside them.
The creature immediately allowed him to pet it.
"...Everything is about to become significantly harder."
Ryu smiled.
The exhaustion was still there.
The fear.
The guilt.
The uncertainty.
But somehow—
The smile remained.
"Maybe."
He looked up toward the mountains.
Toward the unknown domain they had been thrown into.
Toward whatever awaited them next.
Then he shrugged.
"Not worried."
Luto raised an eyebrow.
Ryu grinned.
"We can do anything."
Through Glasswood Skies
25 Pulses Until Execution
Luto had made certain of the count.
The moment they escaped the jagged mountain domain, he had commandeered a damaged transit beacon and spent the better part of a day overriding its internal calendar functions. The device now tracked the Multiversal Pulse Cycle directly.
Twenty-five remained.
Twenty-five multiversal days..
The journey south of Terraforge had not gone according to plan.
First there had been excessive arguing.
Then there had been more arguing.
Then Ryu had attempted to bring the glowing ibex with them.
Then there had been yelling.
A lot of yelling.
"It wanted to come with us!"
"You were covered in deposits from the lake, YOU WERE A SNACK!."
"That's friendship."
"That's not how friendship works."
The ibex had eventually wandered away.
Ryu still looked offended by the outcome.
Now they found themselves traversing an entirely different domain.
One unlike anything they had seen before.
Above them—
A city hung upside down in the sky.
Massive crystal spires rose downward from floating landmasses suspended among the clouds. Streets glittered overhead like rivers of glass while countless bridges connected inverted towers that should not have been able to exist.
Below them—
A crystal forest stretched endlessly across a sea of clouds.
The ground wasn't truly ground at all.
Dense cloud formations formed soft rolling plains between forests of translucent trees whose branches refracted sunlight into countless colors.
Rivers drifted through the clouds like liquid mirrors.
Strange birds with crystalline feathers glided between the inverted city above and the forests below.
The entire domain felt dreamlike.
As though reality had simply decided gravity was optional.
Luto walked carefully through the forest while studying a small projection of coordinates.
"The structure of dimensional travel isn't actually that complicated."
Ryu groaned immediately.
That was never a good sign.
Luto continued anyway.
"Domains are woven into the fabric of space itself. You can't always travel directly through an expanse because many regions are isolated by dimensional layering."
Ryu's eyes glazed over.
"So what we're doing is moving through neighboring domains to access domains that connect to other domains which eventually connect to the Fyr Domain."
Ryu stopped walking.
Steam practically shot from his ears.
"Too many words."
Then he dramatically fell forward.
Face first.
Directly into a cloud.
The cloud cushioned his impact.
Luto stared at him.
"You understood absolutely none of that."
A muffled voice emerged from the cloud.
"Not a single word."
Luto walked over and smacked the back of Ryu's head.
"Ow!"
"Pay attention."
Ryu rolled onto his back.
The clouds shifted beneath him like a giant pillow.
"You're so violent."
Luto ignored him.
His expression became noticeably more serious.
"We need to keep our presence hidden."
That got Ryu's attention.
The humor faded slightly.
Luto looked toward the sky.
Toward the upside-down city.
Toward the countless lives around them.
"We don't know how long the Divine have been tracking us."
His grip tightened around the tracker.
"And after Vanthelos..."
Neither brother finished the sentence.
They didn't need to.
The memory remained fresh.
The trench.
The light.
Caelren and Tikka standing there smiling.
Ryu sat up quietly.
"...Yeah."
The guilt remained.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Luto exhaled slowly.
"So no attracting attention."
"No starting fights."
"No blowing up landmarks."
"No accidentally becoming wanted criminals."
Ryu nodded.
Reasonably.
Calmly.
Almost suspiciously.
"I can do that."
Luto narrowed his eyes.
"You said that in Veltraxis."
"That was different."
"You said that in Raezhar."
"Also different."
"You said that on Terrosia."
"Okay that doesn't count we were kids!"
Luto sighed.
The crystal trees around them chimed softly as a breeze passed through their branches.
For a moment—
The conversation faded.
The brothers continued walking.
Twenty-five pulses remained.
The road ahead was uncertain.
The execution clock continued ticking.
And somewhere beyond countless domains and worlds—
Their brother waited.
Neither knew what shape Onyx would be in when they found him.
Neither knew if the stories were true.
Neither knew how much of the Voidwrath remained.
But one thing had never changed.
No matter how far apart they became.
No matter how impossible the distance.
No matter what gods, executioners, sovereigns, or myths stood in the way.
They kept moving forward.
Together.
And for now—
That was enough.
Gates of the Burning Sovereign
To maintain order across the Divine Territories, checkpoints existed throughout countless domains.
Officially, they were established to preserve peace.
Unofficially—
Everyone knew they existed to watch.
And this one was watching everything.
The fortress-domain stretched across an enormous canyon of steel and stone. Towering walls reinforced with divine alloy rose hundreds of meters into the air while observation towers scanned every traveler entering or leaving the region.
Thousands passed through daily.
Merchants.
Bounty hunters.
Pilgrims.
Daredevils.
Refugees.
And among them—
Two brothers trying very hard not to attract attention.
Which was significantly more difficult than it sounded.
"Stop staring."
"I'm not staring."
"You're staring."
Ryu immediately looked away.
Three seconds later—
He was staring again.
Luto pinched the bridge of his nose.
High above the checkpoint floated a colossal holographic projection visible from nearly every district within the domain.
The image flickered.
Shifted.
Then stabilized.
A familiar face appeared.
Onyx.
The Voidwrath.
Beneath him—
A countdown.
20 PULSES UNTIL EXECUTION
The sight hit harder than either brother expected.
Around them, conversations immediately became louder.
Nervous.
Uncertain.
Fearful.
"First public execution in almost a hundred cycles..."
"Something's wrong."
"This isn't normal."
"The last time they did this—"
"Don't say it."
"I heard it was an omen."
"A new age is coming."
The rumors spread like wildfire.
Some whispered prayers.
Others hurried away.
Many simply stared.
Luto's expression darkened.
The panic wasn't localized.
It was everywhere.
And that made him uneasy.
Because fear on this scale didn't happen naturally.
It was being encouraged.
Manufactured.
Weaponized.
Then one particular conversation reached them.
"The last public execution was Sovereign Veltra."
Ryu froze.
So did Luto.
For a moment neither spoke.
Veltra.
The name carried weight now.
Memories of Veltraxis surfaced immediately.
Ilyra.
The countdown.
The city.
The battle.
The stories.
And suddenly the execution ahead felt much larger than one man.
This wasn't punishment.
It was a message.
Ryu clenched his jaw and kept walking.
Luto noticed but said nothing.
The checkpoint grew more crowded as they moved deeper into it.
Several times divine guards passed within meters of them.
Several times Ryu's emotions flared while overhearing discussions about Onyx.
Several times Luto had to physically pull him away before someone noticed.
By the time they finally exited the checkpoint, both brothers were exhausted.
Back on the road, Luto reached into his dimensional pocket and tossed something over.
Ryu caught it effortlessly.
Smoked Luna deer.
Still warm.
His eyes widened.
"Still warm."
He took a bite.
"Nice."
Luto sighed.
"I've been collecting information."
That got Ryu's attention immediately.
"The Divine structure is bigger than we thought."
Ryu continued chewing.
"How bad?"
"Pretty bad."
Luto folded his arms.
"Executioners, Angels, and Divine Guard are essentially the foundation."
"The military."
"The hunters."
"The enforcement."
Ryu swallowed.
"Okay."
"Above them are Lesser Gods."
"The commanders."
"The ones who oversee entire regions."
Ryu's expression slowly flattened.
"And above them?"
Luto hesitated.
A rare thing.
"Something called the Seven Voices."
Even saying the name felt strange.
"The highest authority."
"The only named ones I've found are Fate and Order."
Ryu blinked.
"Only two?"
"That's all anyone seems to know."
"That's it?"
Luto looked annoyed.
"Also something called Sentinels."
Ryu waited.
Luto shrugged.
"That's literally all I found."
"No descriptions."
"No confirmed sightings."
"No records."
"Just warnings."
Ryu stared.
"...Fun."
"That's one word for it."
The brothers continued walking.
Mountains passed.
Forests changed.
Domains shifted.
Eventually Luto spoke again.
"The multiverse isn't fixed."
Ryu looked over.
"What?"
"There isn't a complete map."
"It keeps growing."
"It changes."
"It adapts."
Ryu stared at him.
Luto remained completely serious.
"I think it might actually be alive."
Silence.
Then—
"You sound insane."
Luto shrugged.
"I spend enough time around you. It was inevitable."
Ryu laughed despite himself.
And they kept moving.
Forward.
Toward the impossible.
Hours later—
The air changed.
The temperature rose dramatically.
A distant rumble echoed through reality itself.
Both brothers slowed.
Then stopped.
Immediately—
They knew.
They had arrived.
Before them stretched a dimension unlike any they had ever seen.
The sky itself burned.
Crimson clouds churned endlessly overhead, illuminated by constant flashes of molten light. Massive volcanic peaks pierced the heavens while rivers of lava carved glowing paths across the landscape below.
Entire mountains erupted in the distance.
Columns of fire rose into the sky.
Ash drifted like snowfall.
The ground cracked and groaned beneath unbearable heat.
And somehow—
The flames felt alive.
Not wild.
Not random.
Purposeful.
Every ember seemed to move with intent.
Every eruption felt deliberate.
As though the dimension itself possessed a heartbeat.
And that heartbeat burned.
Ryu stood frozen.
Luto lowered the tracker.
Neither spoke.
Far beyond those volcanic horizons—
Beyond rivers of magma.
Beyond the burning peaks.
Waited a Sovereign.
If Caelren's stories were true—
If the rumors were true—
Then somewhere within those infernal lands stood the only Sovereign reckless enough to storm the Riven Dimension himself.
And if anyone knew how to reach Onyx—
It would be him.
The flames danced across the horizon.
Waiting.
As the brothers stepped toward the Fyr Domain.
And toward the next impossible chapter of their journey.
