Chapter 75 - Chapter 35: The Victory Hymn of Silence

Chapter 35 The Victory Hymn of Silence

The darkness of the cave no longer inspired fear. It was empty now. Like a wound from which all the poison had finally drained leaving behind only a desolate hazy depth. The Agni Kund (sacred fire pit) held no fire anymore. Only a deep black ash remained hissing occasionally and releasing small puffs of cold steam. The black and golden particles that had been floating in the air the last remnants of the Chhayagrasini (a witch like entity who drains age and life force) had now settled onto the ground like the debris of a poisonous snowfall.

Kiyan was on his knees. His body trembled with the fading adrenaline of battle and the crushing weight of a truth he still had to fully absorb. On his back where the Golden Dagger had pierced him there was no open wound anymore. Aarav's Devanshik (a divinely blessed one who wields divine power) energy had sealed it into a gleaming pink scar. A painful reminder but also a certificate of survival. His breaths came in short sharp puffs dissolving into the damp cave air like smoke.

Aarav stood right beside him one hand pressed against the rough wall as if it was the only thing keeping him upright. His other hand rested on Kiyan's shoulder. A point of contact. A grounding cable. His face was caked with dust and sweat. Deep dark circles had sunk beneath his eyes. But inside those eyes beneath the thick layers of exhaustion a quiet steady light was flickering. A light that said it all. It is over. Everything is over.

Near the mouth of the cave Karishma and Nayan stood together. Nayan had wrapped himself around her as if his arms were the only shelter she needed. Karishma's face was buried against his chest. Her shoulders shook with small involuntary tremors. Not the wail of weeping. Not the joy of laughter. Just a natural release of the body like air that had been held in for too long finally escaping.

There was no sound inside the cave. Only a symphony of four different breaths. Kiyan's fast shallow breathing. Aarav's deep exhausted breathing. Nayan's steady protective breathing. And Karishma's soft trembling breathing. This music was the testament of their survival.

Kiyan lifted his head slowly. His golden eyes which moments ago had been filled with fear and struggle now held a hazy wondering glow. His gaze met Aarav's.

You. His voice was a rough whisper clogged with dust. You actually did it.

Aarav shrugged his shoulders in a light almost childish way. What did I do. You are the one who faced your own mother.

Kiyan tried to smile but it twisted into a spasm of pain. Still his eyes did not leave Aarav's. Thank you. For telling me. For saving me.

Aarav's hand moved from Kiyan's shoulder to the back of his neck pressing with a soft steady warmth. We saved each other.

For a moment their gazes tangled together. A deep wordless conversation that spoke everything. Fear. Trust. Sacrifice. And now the possibility of a new beginning.

Then Aarav said quietly Come. Let us go outside. There is nothing left here.

Kiyan just nodded. A small certain gesture.

All four bodies moved at once as if bound by a single thread. Their legs stumbled as they tried to stand. Their muscles screamed soaked in the acid of exhaustion. But they rose. And they began walking. Kiyan leaning on Aarav. Karishma leaning on Nayan. Out through the long dark passage of the cave.

When they reached the mouth of the cave the outside world struck them. It was a gentle strike. The first rays of morning cold and softly golden fell across their faces like a merciful hand closing their eyes for them. The air smelled of fresh leaves and damp earth. The scent of life.

They stepped outside and turned back to look.

The mouth of the cave was now just a black swallowing void. Its rocks no longer looked terrifying. Only sad. And on the ground at the entrance something lay abandoned. The Chhayagrasini's long black braid. It was nothing now. Just a clump of dead hair caked in dust. Lifeless. A soft gust of wind came lifted the tip of the braid for a second and then let it fall. It went still again.

Kiyan looked at it. Something flickered through his eyes for a moment. Maybe grief. Maybe farewell. Maybe just a strange hollow emptiness. Then he turned his gaze away toward the sun.

Aarav took his hand and squeezed his fingers tight. She is finished now he said. His voice was so quiet it nearly dissolved into the air.

Kiyan answered only by pressing his thumb gently against Aarav's palm.

All four of them drew close together forming a small exhausted cluster.

Nayan pulled Karishma even tighter against himself burying his face in her hair. You went through so much. His voice was muffled and heavy.

Karishma clenched the fabric of Nayan's shirt in her fist her head resting right above his heartbeat. Everything is okay now. She said it like a promise.

And then without any plan or signal they clung to each other. A group embrace. It was not a celebratory hug. It was not one of comfort. It was a necessity. An exchange of body heat. A verification of heartbeats confirming that yes we are all here. We are alive.

Aarav and Kiyan's embrace was the longest the deepest. Aarav rested his forehead against Kiyan's shoulder and Kiyan wrapped his arms tight around Aarav's back pulling him completely into himself. Aarav's lips moved near Kiyan's ear. A warm whisper. Let us go home now.

Kiyan gave no words in return. Just a small nod. And he buried his face even deeper into the curve of Aarav's neck breathing him in.

They pulled apart slowly one by one like waking from a long dream.

All four of them looked one last time at that cave which was now nothing more than a black stain on the mountainside. Then together they turned and began descending the hill. Slowly. With stumbling steps. Leaning on each other. Walking the path that now led toward home.

By the time they reached Aarav's house it was already afternoon.

The door was open. Arushi and Bhaskar stood out on the veranda. As if they had been waiting for centuries.

The moment Arushi saw Aarav she ran. She threw her arms around him so hard that his breath stopped.

Brother. Are you okay. There were tears in her voice.

Aarav hugged her back. Yes Didi. Everything is fine.

Bhaskar came closer slowly. His eyes were wet. He patted Aarav's shoulder. Then he looked at Kiyan.

A moment of silence.

Bhaskar extended his hand.

Kiyan took it.

Thank you Bhaskar said. His voice was heavy. For saving my son.

Kiyan bowed his head. I did nothing Uncle. Aarav did everything.

Bhaskar pulled both of them into a hug.

Arushi noticed Karishma and Nayan too. She smiled and said Come inside. There is food waiting for everyone.

The moment they stepped inside a warm homely smell wrapped around them. Fresh roti dal and the vegetables cooked by their mother's hands.

Everyone sat down. Food was served.

No one spoke much. Only the soft clinking of spoons. An occasional quiet laugh. Nayan added a roti to Karishma's plate. Karishma smiled and said Stop. Do not give me so much.

Aarav spooned some yogurt onto Kiyan's plate. Kiyan said Hey. I can take it myself.

But Aarav smiled and said Let it be. I am serving you today.

Bhaskar and Arushi watched in silence. A deep peace had settled into their eyes.

After the meal everyone went up to the rooftop.

The sun was setting. Golden light spread in every direction.

Aarav and Kiyan sat together to one side. Aarav rested his head on Kiyan's shoulder.

Tired Kiyan asked.

Yes Aarav said. Very.

Kiyan held his hand. Rest now. It is all over.

Aarav closed his eyes. Yes. Everything is fine now.

Not far away Nayan and Karishma stood together. Nayan took her hand. You will never be afraid again alright.

Karishma nodded. No. Because you are here.

And they held each other close.

Bhaskar and Arushi watched from below. Arushi smiled and said Look. Everything looks so beautiful now.

Bhaskar nodded. Yes. Everything is fine now.

Night fell.

Everyone went to their own rooms.

Aarav and Kiyan were in Aarav's room.

Aarav lay on the bed. Kiyan sat beside him.

Sleep Kiyan said.

Aarav held his hand. You sleep too.

Kiyan smiled. I am right here.

Aarav closed his eyes. It feels good. The feeling that everything is finally alright.

Kiyan said softly Yes. It feels so good.

They both fell silent.

Only the sound of their breathing filled the room.

And outside on the night wind there was a faint sweet fragrance. As if everything truly was okay now.
