Chapter 37 The Beginning of a Shadow
String lights danced across the rooftop of Aarav's house as if they had risen from the ground to whisper secrets to the sky. The air was thick with the scent of roses and kewra flowers but even stronger than that was the fragrance of joy. Freshly cooked delicacies new clothes and laughter brimming with hope.
It was Arushi's engagement.
The entire house was decorated like a bride. Arushi stood at the center in a deep red saree embroidered with fine gold thread glowing like the moon itself. A cheerful flock of relatives and neighbors surrounded her showering blessings and teasing her in equal measure. Bhaskar stood near the door with a serious but deeply content expression welcoming the guests as they arrived.
Aarav and Kiyan stood off to one side two silent sentinels. Aarav had dressed himself in a blue kurta pajama and Kiyan wore a plain kurta of the same shade. A subtle signal that they were now a single unit. Aarav's eyes were fixed on his sister whose face held a glow he had not seen in months. Kiyan stood quietly beside him but his golden eyes were sweeping across the room scanning every new face analyzing every voice.
Look at that Aarav said with a smile nudging Kiyan's shoulder. Didi's eyes are shining exactly like Ma's used to.
Kiyan nodded faintly. A small smile flickered across his lips. But his gaze had already locked onto the door.
The guests were arriving. The boy and his family.
He stepped inside. Aayush. Tall and well built wearing a light gray suit that matched the tone of his skin. His dark hair was neatly styled and a polite perfectly measured smile rested on his face. He greeted Bhaskar with a slight bow. Not too much not too little. Then his eyes swept across the room until they found Arushi and his smile softened just a fraction more.
He seems like a good boy some auntie whispered.
Well educated good job. Arushi's luck has finally turned an uncle murmured into someone's ear.
Aarav studied him too. On the surface everything was fine. Aayush's behavior was courteous his conversation measured. But something was off. Maybe there was just a little too much sharpness in the gleam of his eyes. Maybe the smile stayed exactly the same every single time as if he had practiced it like a gesture in a mirror.
Kiyan's body went completely still. Aarav felt it immediately. He glanced down and saw Kiyan's hand curled into a fist his nails digging into his palm.
What is it Aarav whispered.
Kiyan did not answer. His gaze was pinned on Aayush who was now speaking quietly with Arushi. Kiyan's golden pupils contracted. A faint almost imperceptible tremor passed through them. Like a radar catching the echo of an invisible threat. A strange uneasy flutter stirred deep inside his chest. A warning hum he had not heard in months.
The rituals continued. Sweets were distributed. Blessings were given. Aayush gently placed a ring on Arushi's finger. The engagement was sealed. The room thundered with applause.
Aarav hugged his sister with joy but one eye stayed on Kiyan who was still standing there like a statue his face carrying a strange hollow emptiness.
When the moment allowed Aarav pulled Kiyan toward the veranda where the noise was quieter. The cold night air brushed against their warm faces.
Tell me what is going on Aarav said placing a hand on Kiyan's shoulder. You have been off all evening.
Kiyan drew a deep breath as if tasting something hidden in the air. That boy. Aayush.
Yes. What about him.
He is not what he appears to be Aarav.
Aarav tilted his head. What do you mean. He seemed perfectly fine out there. Polite well spoken.
Yes Kiyan said. His voice was laced with a dangerous stillness. Perfectly fine. Entirely fine. Far too fine. Every movement he makes feels like someone is controlling him with a remote. His eyes have no depth in them. Just glass. And when he smiles. Kiyan placed a hand on his own chest. Right here I feel a strange coldness. Like a shard of ice pressing against the skin.
Aarav listened with complete seriousness. He knew Kiyan's fear. He knew the signals that ordinary people could never detect. You think he is someone else. Someone not from our world.
I do not know Kiyan said shaking his head. But he is not clean. Even my powers quiet as they are now are giving off a faint warning. Like the ache near a wound that still has not fully healed.
Aarav looked at the veranda railing then glanced back inside where Aayush was now speaking earnestly with Bhaskar like the perfect future son in law. A war was being waged inside him. His sister's glowing happiness on one side and his partner's deep unerring intuition on the other.
Alright Aarav finally said turning back to Kiyan. I trust you. You have never been wrong about anything like this. But today is Arushi's day. We cannot do anything right now.
Kiyan looked at him. There was a helplessness in his eyes. But what if he is dangerous. What if he hurts Arushi.
We will not let him out of our sight Aarav said taking his hand. We will investigate. Quietly. Starting tomorrow. But today we just have to be happy. Promise me you will not let those worry lines show on your face. If Didi notices she will ask questions.
Kiyan drew another deep breath and slowly let the tension in his face dissolve. He squeezed Aarav's hand. I promise. But stay alert Aarav. Something inside him is broken. I can feel it.
I am with you Aarav said offering a reassuring smile. Same as always. Come on let us go back inside. I think it is time to cut the cake.
They returned indoors. The atmosphere of joy was at its peak. Aayush cut the cake with Arushi then leaned in and whispered something in her ear. Arushi blushed deep red and burst into laughter. The sight was heartwarming to everyone.
Everyone except Kiyan.
He watched as Aayush laughed and in that fleeting instant his eyes. Those perfectly ordinary brown eyes. For just a fraction of a second they filled with a strange hollow gleam. As if someone else was hiding behind them. Someone merely imitating.
Then the moment passed. Aayush was once again that courteous ideal young man.
The guests began to leave. Aayush and his family said their farewells. Arushi stood at the door with a quiet hopeful smile on her face. Aarav and Kiyan stood behind her.
As Aayush turned to look back one last time his gaze collided directly with Kiyan's.
One second. Just one second.
In that single heartbeat what Kiyan saw sent a shard of ice straight down his spine. That gaze was not empty. Inside it was a deep bottomless darkness. The kind of darkness that does not swallow things. It swallows light itself. And at the center of that darkness burned a spark. Hatred. Greed. And an old old pain.
Then Aayush nodded smiled and walked away.
The door closed. A sudden silence swallowed the house feeling even heavier after the noise that had filled it moments ago.
Arushi let out a happy sigh and came over to her brother throwing her arms around him in a tight hug. Everything is going to be fine right Aarav. He seemed good did he not.
Aarav patted her back but his eyes stayed on Kiyan who was still staring at the door as if some visible threat was still standing there.
Yes Didi Aarav said forcing certainty into his voice. Everything will be fine. We will make sure of it.
And as the night deepened and the string lights began to fade a new cold shadow began creeping over the lingering warmth of celebration. A shadow of doubt. A shadow of fear. And the beginning of a new mystery that had just knocked on their door.
