Chapter 39 An Incomplete Mystery
The smell of old books in Bhaskar's study room had been overtaken today by a sharp new tension. The fear in Aarav and Kiyan's eyes was not just fear. It was a deep incomprehensible shock. As if someone had shattered the laws of nature itself.
What we saw Papa Aarav said struggling to keep his voice steady. It was not normal. A human being does not laugh like that. Does not speak like that.
Bhaskar listened to them with a grave expression. When Kiyan described the terrifying laughter at the cremation ground Aayush's vacant stare and words like new body Bhaskar's brows furrowed deeply. He removed his glasses and began cleaning them slowly.
Going to a cremation ground. Strange behavior. Bhaskar thought out loud. It could be post traumatic stress or a sign of some severe shock. But the words new body. That is strange. Very strange. I need to investigate.
That day Bhaskar used every contact he had. Hospitals. Police records. Private clinics. He tried to gather information from every possible source. Aarav Kiyan Karishma and Nayan waited in restless anxiety. Every doorbell every phone call made their hearts pound.
At seven in the evening an email arrived on Bhaskar's laptop. He read it carefully. Slowly the color began draining from his face. He closed his eyes then opened them again as if he could not believe what he was seeing.
What did you find Papa Aarav asked. His voice was tight with tension.
Without saying a word Bhaskar turned the laptop screen toward them.
It was a scanned copy of a police FIR.
Date: Six weeks ago.
Location: Highway 8 Neelgiri Forest Section.
Details: Car accident. The driver Aayush Varma age twenty six was extracted from the vehicle. No clear signs of life. Death certificate issued. Body placed in an ambulance for transport to the government hospital.
Silence swallowed the room. Karishma covered her mouth with both hands.
Death certificate Nayan whispered in disbelief. But he is alive. We have all seen him.
That is the mystery Bhaskar said. His voice was heavy. He opened the next document. A hospital logbook entry written by hand.
Time: Two hours after the accident. 1:15 AM.
Entry: Body of Aayush Varma brought in. Accompanied by death certificate. Sent to the morgue.
Next entry 6:00 AM: Night staff reported that one of the morgue doors was found open. Security cameras were checked. No unusual activity was detected.
7:30 AM: The morgue attendant while conducting a body count discovered that one body Aayush Varma was missing. Police and administration were notified.
Missing Aarav repeated quietly as if the word made no sense to him.
And now look at this Bhaskar said opening a third document. It was a discharge summary from a private clinic listing Aayush's home address.
Date: Three days after the accident.
Patient: Aayush Varma.
Symptoms: Shock. Temporary memory loss. Post traumatic amnesia. Mild tremors.
Diagnosis: Miraculously survived with only minor injuries. Discharged. Cleared to return home.
How is this possible Karishma said. Her voice was trembling. Someone is declared dead and then three days later walks out of a clinic alive. Without any serious injuries.
Miraculously Nayan muttered the word. What kind of miracle are they talking about.
Bhaskar closed the laptop and leaned back in his chair. There was a strange emptiness in his eyes. As a scientist he believed in facts. But these facts did not feel like facts at all.
There are two possibilities Bhaskar said quietly. The first is that this is all one massive administrative blunder. Maybe Aayush was only in a deep coma not actually dead. Maybe the police and the hospital staff made a mistake in their haste. And then he somehow got up and walked out of the morgue and three days later he received treatment at a clinic.
But Papa Aarav said. We have seen him. He is not normal. His laughter. His words. He does not act like someone recovering from trauma. It is as if someone else is inside him.
Then the second possibility Bhaskar paused and took a deep breath. Is that whatever happened is beyond our understanding. Something for which there is no logical explanation.
Kiyan who had been listening silently until now spoke up. A painful clarity filled his voice. When we were inside the cave. When the Chhayagrasini (a witch like entity who drains age and life force) died. Something happened. An energy was released. A very old very evil energy. And now Aayush's miraculous survival cannot be a coincidence.
What are you trying to say Kiyan Bhaskar asked.
I do not know Kiyan said shaking his head. But I can feel it. Inside Aayush's body something is wrong. Something is very wrong. He is no longer Aayush. Something else is wearing his skin. And that thing has come for all of us.
A terrifying silence fell over the room. Bhaskar looked toward the window where the darkness outside was growing deeper.
So what do we do Nayan asked.
We stay alert Bhaskar said. A new resolve hardened his voice. We will not tell Arushi anything yet. It would not be right to frighten her. But we will keep an eye on Aayush. Every step. Every movement. And if he truly is not what he appears to be then we have to be ready.
Ready for what Karishma asked. Fear trembled in her voice.
Bhaskar looked at all of them. Aarav's worried eyes. Kiyan's pain filled pupils. Nayan's protective stance. Karishma's shaking hand.
We have to be ready Bhaskar said softly for the possibility that our enemy was never really dead. He was just searching for a new body. And now perhaps he has found one.
In that moment every person sitting in that room felt the same realization. This was not the end. This was a new beginning. A far more terrifying beginning. One in which the enemy was now hiding behind a face. And that face had already walked through their front door.
