Chapter 139 - Underground Shelter

"Cunning!"

Having finally found where Stansfield likely hid his assets, Hunter was in high spirits.

He glanced at the time and realized that after all the delays, it was already past 10:00 AM.

Although he wasn't sure if Stansfield would return at noon...

Disappearing from the FBI's sight for a long time was undoubtedly very dangerous.

So, Hunter began to speed up.

He reached out and knocked on the stone wall under the stairs, searching while listening carefully for any changes or mechanisms.

Not long after, when Hunter knocked on an inconspicuous corner of the stone wall under the stairs...

Some faint mechanical sounds appeared!

Relying on his physical fitness, which was now more than three times that of a normal person, Hunter keenly caught that mechanical sound.

His eyes lit up, and he immediately pressed down hard on that spot.

Click!

Accompanied by the mechanical sound of springs and gears grinding... the stone wall, which originally only had some rough textures looking like patterns...

A section of the stone wall suddenly moved, revealing a small door less than 1.5 meters high and half a meter wide.

"Found it!"

Hunter quickly took out his tactical flashlight. At the same time, his other hand held the makeup mirror again to inspect the inside carefully.

To his surprise, there were no so-called traps inside.

The space behind the stone wall wasn't large, only about one square meter.

Inside the space behind the stone wall under the stairs was a straight staircase leading down.

Without any hesitation, Hunter climbed directly down the stairs.

He estimated that he had climbed down about four or five meters when he could smell a faint moldy scent and the aroma of alcohol.

So he sped up his descent. After climbing down another meter or two, he felt his feet touch the ground.

The surrounding temperature seemed to have dropped a bit, and his field of vision widened.

"It's a tunnel!"

Hunter shone his tactical flashlight around cautiously.

On one side, less than a meter away, was the wall of the tunnel.

Hunter walked over and knocked, confirming it was solid behind.

Looking to the other side, he saw the tunnel wasn't long, only about five or six meters.

The tunnel was about 2.2 or 2.3 meters high and just over a meter wide.

Hunter glanced around; it seemed to be built of concrete.

Judging by the traces left on the walls, it seemed to have been built a long time ago.

After looking thoughtfully for a few moments, Hunter continued to the other side of the tunnel, where there was a large locked steel door.

Approaching it, the smile on his face could no longer be concealed.

This kind of ancient lock couldn't trap Hunter at all.

He carefully felt around and checked, confirming there were no traps nearby.

Hunter casually took out his lock-picking tools from his Personal Inventory.

In this underground tunnel several meters deep, Stansfield hadn't installed surveillance cameras.

For Hunter, this was undoubtedly good news.

After fiddling for a dozen seconds, with a soft click...

The lock was opened. Hunter turned the handle quickly and pushed open the steel door.

Accompanied by a low grinding sound as the heavy steel door was pushed open...

Instantly, a wave of coolness surged from behind the steel door.

Surging toward Hunter along with it were a faint moldy smell and a rich aroma of alcohol.

Hunter's spirits lifted. After pushing open the steel door, he walked in quickly.

The next moment, illuminated by the tactical flashlight, an underground space of about seventy or eighty square meters and four meters high, seemingly constructed entirely of reinforced concrete, was completely exposed to his vision.

This underground space seemed to have been built for some time.

Using the light of the flashlight, Hunter quickly scanned the interior.

In this underground space, there were some ventilation facilities and a set of rusted, heavy power generation equipment.

However, perhaps because the power generation equipment was too heavy...

Stansfield hadn't removed it; he left it in this underground space.

Clearly, this underground space wasn't built by Stansfield.

It should have been built by the original owner when the villa was constructed.

According to information Hunter had gathered recently, this villa seemed to have been built during the Cold War.

Considering that crazy era, whether Americans, Soviets, or other nations, everyone worried that conflicts between the two superpowers might lead to nuclear war.

Undoubtedly, this must be a private shelter built by the villa's original builder to protect himself and his family against a future nuclear war.

Using the tactical flashlight, Hunter discovered a button near the entrance that seemed connected to the lights here.

He walked over quickly and pressed the button.

The next moment, two orange lights lit up in the underground space, illuminating the area brightly.

At the same time, an ear-piercing alarm sounded.

Hunter froze for a moment, then his face changed drastically.

"Damn it!"

It must be because he hadn't encountered any traps or alarms all the way after breaking into Stansfield's villa today.

As a result, over time, Hunter's vigilance had lowered significantly.

"Not good. I have to leave as soon as possible."

Hunter didn't know how long it would take Stansfield to return to the villa after the alarm sounded!

But one thing was certain: he had to leave immediately.

So, using the two lights lit up in the underground space...

Hunter took a few quick steps and scanned all the items placed in the underground space.

This underground space had obviously become the place where Stansfield stored his private valuables after he discovered it.

There were quite a few things collected by Stansfield and placed here.

Near one wall, there were twenty or thirty boxes of different sizes.

Like the boxes Hunter found in the villa's attic earlier, they were all stamped with "DEA."

Unsurprisingly, they contained standard weapons and equipment Stansfield had procured from the DEA.

Hunter unceremoniously swept all these items into his Personal Inventory.

Anyway, over this period, as he constantly spent money to increase the proficiency of various skills...

While his skill levels rose, the size of Hunter's Personal Inventory was also constantly expanding.

By now, his inventory size had exceeded 100 cubic meters.

Packing everything in the underground space might be a bit of a stretch.

But taking away most of the things here was no problem.

Knowing time was urgent, Hunter didn't have time to open the boxes and check them carefully.

After quickly collecting those DEA weapons and equipment, he soon walked to the other side.

There stood several huge oak barrels, which seemed to store fine wine; the aroma of alcohol Hunter smelled came from here.

He wasn't very interested in wine; although he drank some usually, it was mostly beer.

However, after getting closer and seeing clearly, Hunter's eyes lit up.

The oak barrels each had a wooden tag hanging on them.

They recorded what kind of wine was stored inside, which estate it was brewed in, and on what day it was barreled.

Hunter's gaze swept over quickly. Even the youngest barrel of whiskey had been aged for five years.

The other four barrels were around seven or eight years old.

But two of them had actually been aged for over forty years.

It looked like Stansfield found them in this underground space after buying the villa and re-barreled them in new oak barrels for storage.

He just wondered if those two barrels of brandy stored for so long were still drinkable.

Besides these wines, Hunter also saw a row of four wine cabinets filled with various foreign liquors whose bottles and packaging looked extraordinary.

He didn't hesitate. Adhering to the principle of "a thief never leaves empty-handed"...

Hunter stepped forward quickly and swept the seven oak barrels of aged wine and dozens of bottles of precious foreign liquor into his Personal Inventory.
