Chapter 21 - chapter 21 : The Carnival Night

Caroline lay on the bed, lifeless. Katherine had come and killed her.

Suddenly, her eyes jolted open.

She looked around in confusion. Something had changed. Something was weird. She could feel it.

An intense hunger struck her out of nowhere.

She slowly got up from the bed and started to walk toward the door. After she stepped outside the room, she saw a nurse at the desk.

Caroline slowly walked toward her. "Excuse me, where is everyone?"

The nurse looked up from her work. "It's the middle of the night, hon."

Caroline frowned in confusion. "It is?"

The nurse nodded. "Mm-hm."

Caroline then asked, "Well, have you seen my mom?"

The nurse replied, "She left after dinner with your brother. And then your friend Elena stopped by."

Caroline blinked. "She did? Yeah, she did. But she said her name was Katherine."

The nurse returned to her paperwork, not paying much attention to Caroline.

"Can I just get something to eat?" Caroline asked.

The nurse:"Breakfast comes around 7:00."

Caroline: "But I'm hungry."

The nurse:"You should go back to sleep."

Caroline turned to go back into her room, but suddenly she smelled something.

She stopped and turned around. "What is that smell?"

The nurse stood to go to the storage room to keep the files. "Back to bed."

Caroline tried to leave, but the scent was making her hungrier by the second. She looked around and realized the smell was coming from one of the patients' rooms. When she went closer, she saw a blood bag hanging beside the bed.

Before she realized it, she was already inside the room.

The nurse came back from the storage room and asked, "What are you doing in here?"

Caroline turned around. "I don't know."

The nurse said in a stern voice, "You need to go back to bed."

Caroline returned to her room. The nurse made sure she was inside, then turned to leave.

The moment the hallway was quiet, Caroline pulled out the blood bag she had hidden in her clothes.

Slowly, she lifted it to her mouth and started to drink.

The metallic taste flooded her tongue.

Then she quickly threw it away.

She held her head, her thoughts spinning. Something was wrong with her.

But the smell of the blood drew her in again, stronger than before.

She picked up the blood bag and began to drink once more.

(At morning)

I walked into Caroline's room, feeling unusually energetic.

I put down the tray of food. "Guess what? The doctors discharged me. And they said you are also free to go tomorrow."

I looked at Caroline, but she didn't seem interested.

I poked her cheek. "Why so long face? It's ok. I know that you are sad about this carnival night. But I talked with Elena and Bonnie, and they said they'll handle it. Also, Mom said you are not eating."

Caroline finally looked at me. "The food tastes disgusting."

I pulled out three chocolate bars that I had secretly carried with me. "I know these suck. This is hospital food. So be like me. Eat chocolate bars. Dump the food in the trash secretly without others knowing. Mom happy, you happy. Win-win for everyone."

Caroline chuckled after listening to me.

I handed them to her. "Here, take it."

She took them from me. "Who gave you these? As long as I know, you were not allowed to leave the hospital too."

I scratched my neck. "I may or may not have blackmailed Jeremy into giving these to me secretly."

Caroline chuckled. Then she took a bite of the chocolate, but her face turned sour again. "These also taste bad."

I looked at her in confusion. "Really? Maybe because you are still not healed. That's why it is happening."

She put the chocolate down. "Maybe."

"No, no." I took the half-eaten chocolate and threw it into the trash can. "If you don't throw away the chocolate wrappers after eating them, the nurses will know that you are eating chocolate."

Caroline gave me a faint smile.

Then she held out her hand. "Oh, my cute little baby brother, come here. Give me a hug."

I went and hugged her.

But suddenly she hugged me way too tight.

"Care?" I said her name, feeling something was wrong.

Suddenly she let go. She was breathing heavily.

She turned around and looked down at the floor. "Sorry, I was just too hungry. Keep the chocolates under my pillow. I'll eat later. You should go now. The doctors will be here any minute for the daily checkup."

"Are you sure? Are you ok?" I tried to look at her, but I couldn't see her face.

Caroline didn't turn around. Instead, she waved her hand. "Yeah, I'm sure.Just go"

"Ok." I put the chocolates under her pillow and turned to leave.

After I left, Caroline slowly turned toward the door. Then she hurriedly grabbed a mirror and looked at her reflection.

Her eyes were black. Veins spread across her. She looked like a monster.

She threw the mirror away and curled up on the bed.

"Oh my God."

Caroline was dressing to leave. She couldn't go outside in the morning. She had to leave now.

As soon as she put on the necklace that Elena had given her, her skin started to burn.

"Oww." She quickly took off the necklace and threw it on the floor.

Suddenly her mouth started to hurt. When she looked in the mirror, she saw fangs forming.

"Ahhh." She held her mouth in pain.

The nurse rushed back after hearing the noise to see what happened.

Caroline grabbed her by the neck. "You will not tell anyone."

The nurse's eyes glazed over. She got compelled, "Yes, I will not tell anyone."

Then Caroline slowly opened her mouth and bit into the nurse's neck.

Warm blood filled her mouth.

I was on the phone with Dad.

Dad: "So are you not going to the carnival?"

Aaron: "I actually went all these years because Caroline wouldn't let me skip it. Since she is at the hospital, I figured I'll stay at home."

Dad laughed.

Dad: "Well, I wanted to go to Mystic Falls after I heard about your and your sister's accident, but Steven and I suddenly got into a huge pile of work."

Dad took a breath.

Dad: "I asked your mom about you guys. And she reassured me, saying even though it looked serious, your and your sister's condition became normal."

Aaron: "Yeah. The doctors said my body suddenly started to become cold, and they had no idea why."

Dad: "Aaron, I've decided something."

Aaron: "What?"

Dad: "I'll tell you whatever you want to know. I have to finish the work I am currently on. Then I'll tell you whatever you want to know. About these monsters and about the truth of Mystic Falls."

Aaron: "Really?"

Dad: "Yes. You are a Forbes, and it comes with responsibilities. Our family has always been the town sheriff. We have a responsibility to protect everyone. And with that, I also have some family heirlooms for you."

Aaron: "Family heirlooms?"

Dad: "Well, my dad gave them to me when I was 17. I wanted to do the same with Caroline, but Caroline didn't seem fit to know about all of this. She is normal. She has normal dreams. And I want that for her. So Aaron, if you really want to become part of this, then think about it hard and make a choice. When I finish my work here, I'll give you a call again."

[The call ended.]

I wondered what the real truth about all these creatures was.

Wait.

I forgot to tell Jeremy about this.

Jeremy must know something from the girl Anna. Since he was so interested in vampire stuff, he surely knows something, right?

I should ask him to lend me his ancestor's diary.

Steven and Bill Forbes were in a small basement.

The basement was filled with the dead bodies of vampires.

Steven looked around, examining them carefully. "Something killed them, but it doesn't look like the work of a vampire or a human. Their hearts burst from the inside. My best guess is a witch, but no witch is powerful enough to kill 20 vampires at once."

Bill nodded. "They look like they all died at the same time. Even if there was a powerful witch, she would still have to kill them one by one. But to take out 20 vampires at once… I have my doubts."

Steven stepped back from the bodies. "So did you decide to tell Aaron the truth?"

Bill looked at him. "I decided to tell him. But it has to be postponed. Vampire stuff is messy. I can't tell him over the phone. So when we finish this work, I will go to Mystic Falls and tell him directly."

Steven nodded and gave Bill a little pat in the back.
